ON HISTORY (and more Elaine!)

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of democracy, tonight is your answer."
'I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight."

****President-elect Barack Obama

So? Everyone sleepy today from staying up too late?
We gave up a little sleep to witness a lot of history.
Earlier this week we talked about our first votes for president, and whether we remembered them. November 4, 2008, a lot of indelible memories were made.
********************************************

And now back to our regular programming.

HANK: I hear through the cyber-grapevine that you have a title for your newest book! Can you reveal it? Was it..an easy choice?

ELAINE: We went through more than 50 titles before we found one my editor and publisher liked. It took dogged persistence.

HANK: Like, so often you were barking up the wrong tree? Or biting off more than you could chew? I mean, we shouldn't kibble over titles...

Okay, fine. Just tell us what you decided...

ELAINE: The fifth Josie Marcus mystery shopper novel will be called "The Fashion Hound Murders," thanks to Kara, my editor, and Don, my husband. And thanks to my cyberfriends, who emailed me their ideas. Your inspiration kept me going.

HANK: Yes, the gang at Cozy Armchair and Cozy Discussion had some wonderful ideas..you have lots of great pals. (A big shout out to you all...) And we all want you to answer

the Jungle Red Questions! ...

JRW: Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot?

ELAINE:Miss Marple. I had my mustache removed by electrolysis.

JRW Sex or violence?
ELAINE Sex. I can get violence on TV.

JRW Pizza or Chocolate?
ELAINE: Chocolate

JRW: Daniel Craig or Pierce Brosnan? (We won't even include Sean Connery because we know the answer. Don't we?)
ELAINE Daniel Craig.

JRW Katherine Hepburn or Audrey Hepburn?
ELAINE Katherine. I prefer Faberge eggs to breakfast at Tiffany's.

JRW First person or Third person?
ELAINE Both, but not at the same time.

JRW Prologue or no prologue?
ELAINE No prologues for me, but I enjoy other people's prologues. I feel the same way about kids.

JRW Your favorite book as a kid?
ELAINE "The Pokey Little Puppy." A good book in all senses of the word, since the cover was well-gnawed.

JRW: Making dinner or making reservations?
ELAINE: Reservations. I like to leave cooking to the pros.

And also: the Jungle Red BIG LIE!

. Tell us four things about yourself. Only three can be true. We'll try to guess what's false.

I rode with a thousand bikers from Wilmington, Delaware, to the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC.
I have a small tattoo on my right shoulder.
I was nearly thrown out of a New Orleans hotel for trashing a room.
I got six months probation in Litchfield, Illinois.

HANK: So...I can picture Elaine with a tattoo. (Maybe of her Lefty award?) What do you all think?

Don't forget to enter our contest for a free autographed copy of the JUST RELEASED Murder with All the Trimmings! Just put in a comment...with a shopping tip a la Elaine if the spirit moves you!

And hey--if you can't get enough Elaine? If you've ever been tempted to be a mystery shopper--she's telling all to the fabulous Femmes Fatales.

  1. Yes, definitely still sleepy and fuzzy-headed. There was a lot of toasting on at the party I attended last night. And honking all night long..but that happens a lot on 59th Street.

ANYWAY, yes to the bikers and the tattoo but I can't see the lovely Elaine trashing a hotel room.

  2. I'm enjoying the speculation about my secrets and lies. Keep going, JR writers.

  3. Welcome to JRW, Elaine!

I agree...no to the room trashing. Do you really have a tattoo? Of what??

And you can DRIVE a motorcycle? Or did you ride on the back of one or in a sidecar or behind them in a convertible?

  4. No sidecars for me, Hallie -- that's for sissies. I rode on the back of a motorcycle. Saw some great tatts. Also saw some tough men get to the Vietnam Memorial and turn back. They couldn't face looking at their buddies names in that black marble. Some of them had ridden more than a thousand miles, but the Memorial was too much for them.

  5. Oh, I believe that the lovely Elaine could trash a room!
When I shared a room with her once I was awoken at 3 am as she silently pulled the room apart, looking for her lost airline ticket (she never did find it).

here's to great things with your new Josie book, Elaine!

  6. Hmmm, I'm trying to imagine Elaine sitting on the Group W bench...

Best of luck with the book, Elaine; the cover is great!

  7. Hey Rhys--sounds like you know the real scoop about Elaine...maybe come back and tell us more?

And thanks, Dana, now I can't get that song out of my mind. (And Thanksgiving is coming too!) At least if you're going to have an earworm, it might as well be a good song.

Which is a BIG HINT about tomorrow's bloggers.

But tonight? Even though Elaine indicated she rode with bikers-I still like the tattoo.

  8. Which is the lie?
    (1) Yes, I rode with the bikers to the Vietnam Wall.
    (2) Yes, I nearly got thrown out of a hotel in New Orleans for trashing it. I belonged to a church youth group and we were at a St. Vincent de Paul Society convention. The boys had one room and the girls shared another. We girls thought it would be funny to "decorate" the boys' room while they were at a meeting -- with TP, shaving cream, lipstick on the mirrors and other touches. Too bad the maid opened the door before the boys did. She called the manager, who summoned the youth group leader, who made us all clean the room and restore it to pristine condition while he lectured us on responsibility.
Years later, I would clean rooms that were in far worse shape to research "Murder with Reservations."
    (3) Six months probation -- I got that for driving on the interstate at 96 miles an hour near Litchfield, Illinois, in an '86 Jaguar. I was arrested and bailed out by my husband. I had to bring a lawyer in from St. Louis for my court date.
    (4) I do not have a tattoo. In fact, I am needle phobic.

Thanks so much for inviting me to be a guest at JRW. It was fun.

  9. Thanks, Elaine! What a terrific visit...thanks for all the shopping tips and taking time to chat. We hope you'll come back.

And Rhys, you were so right about the room trashing!

We'll announce the winners of your latest book soon on Jungle Red...

Another guest blogger tomorrow--actually, two. And if you're having post-season bseball withdrawal..might want to see who's on (Jungle Red) first.
