I Cannot Resist...

INGRID THOFT

When I walk through the Pike Place Market, I resist the place selling mini cheesecakes, even though the peanut butter version is calling my name.  I resist taking a nap on gray afternoons when I should be working.  I resist binging season three of "Broadchurch" though I desperately want to.

However, there are some things I can't resist:

Wheat Thins.  Ridiculous, right?  How can I ignore chocolate in my pantry, which I love by the way, but a box of those salty crackers doesn't stand a chance?  I don't buy them because the temptation is too great.

What else is my personal kryptonite?  Baby elephants get me every time.  Really any baby animal will do it or human babies, for that matter.  Adorable videos and pictures are a guaranteed time-waster for me.

The last thing on my list?  Water.  When I see it, I want to go in it.  I particularly can't resist warm, tropical seas, but I have to admit that I even gaze wistfully at cold Puget Sound and wish I could be in its depths.

Anyone share my love of salty wheat crackers?  What's on your list of things you just can't resist?

  1. Aaaww, the baby elephants are sooooo cute! Puppies and kitties are pretty irresistible, too . . .

Food is tough to pass up if it’s something you really like . . . I like Wheat Thins, too, but I have more trouble passing up those Cranberry and Sage Triscuits. It’s more difficult to pass up the chocolate and impossible to pass up the coffee . . . .

Despite my best efforts, I can’t pass up stopping in the bookshop, or at the shelf of books in the store, or going to the library . . . I just have to have a book . . . .

    1. There is definitely some chocolate that I can't keep in the house. Those miniature Reese's peanut butter cups stand no chance in my presence.

  2. I can't resist sweets of any kind. Or Ritz crackers or Cheez-Its for almost anything Disney or water or.... Really, at some point in my life, I should learn self-control.

    1. I prefer Cheese Nips to Cheez-Its, but I understand your need for the cheese crackers.

And if they still made those stick like crackers Cheese Tidbits, I'd be all done. Those things are dangerous beyond measure.

  3. Wheat Thins, Cheez-its, and olive oil and pepper Triscuits...will have to try the cranberry and sage ones now. I spend too much time at the library and always have. Coffee goes without saying and teas from regular to Lapsang Souchong.

  4. I've never seen the cranberry and sage Triscuits, Joan, will have to look. But wheat thins? Pass-upable in my book. I can't pass up cats, have to stop and call "kitty kitty" until they come over and say hello. Australian shepherd puppies, the big guys too. And definitely bookstores! (And this could be TMI, but bathrooms. You don't know when the next will come along...)

    1. I hear you, Lucy/Roberta. I work in an old building where the restrooms are sub par, so when I'm out of the office during the day I take repeated advantage of more modern plumbing whether I need it or not.

    2. We have a rule when traveling: Never pass up a chance to go potty, no matter if you just went. It could be a long time between flush toilets.

    4. Lucy, the Cranberry Sage Triscuits tend to show up on our grocery shelves around Thanksgiving.

  5. Right there with you on Wheat Thins! Also Cape Cod potato chips, even the reduced fat ones. Also a ripe avocado - anytime, anywhere - and a glass of wine with a nice lunch. There, I've said it! Wine with lunch just seems so European.

  6. Books--you never know when you'll find a keeper, chocolate doesn't stand a chance in my vicinity, and fabric--lovely bolts of fabric--they whisper possibilities to me....

  7. Yes, I love Wheat Thins, too. And Z crackers, the sea salt kind. I hardly ever pass up coffee, and if someone offers a latte, or an iced latte, I'm sold. Popcorners! I forgot. Have you ever had them? They serve them on JetBlue. They are amazing amazing amazing.
As for Videos, I cannot pass up videos of little kids singing. And especially little kids who surprisingly know the words to something, or sing it very passionately. And especially little kids who seem like they won't be good singers, who then wow the crowd. ( like the shy girl on the British talent showwho sang defying Defying Gravity. That was a showstopper. )
And, if you look at my closet, white T-shirts. I have way too many.
What a fun thing to think about!

    2. What is it with JRW and crackers? I just tossed a box of something stale. We seem to open a box and then ignore it. I do like Yrader Joe's Rosemary and Olive Oil ones tho

  8. Wheat Thins? Really? Okay, I respect diversity. Cherries are the food that gets me. I can go through a bag of ripe Bing cherries in an astonishingly short amount of time. Also peanut M&Ms. I can ration out the plain ones, but the only time I can exercise self control around the peanut ones are in the store, when I choose not to bring them home.

Puppies and kittens of any kind will always divert my attention from the humans in the room, and I'm apt to fall into intense conversation with border collies of any age, but particularly the classic black and white ones.

There are also certain authors I cannot resist. I pre-order their books and just clear my calendar so I can spend the day reading when the books come in. Debs is one, of course, even though I have often read the book in manuscript. I like to see what she and her editor have done with it since the first time I saw it. A new Ruth Galloway novel by Elly Griffiths is guaranteed to eat my weekend, and you, Ingrid, have earned a place on that list as well. I read the first Fina book, then immediately ordered all the rest and ripped through them in very short order. I know your next book is a non-Fina stand alone; can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve.

    1. Am working my way through a quart of local bing cherries as we speak, Gigi, one of the best of our summer fruits here.

    2. I spent some time in Portland, Oregon, and developed a taste for Rainier Cherries, too, but they're pretty pricey here in Texas. Enjoy, Ann!

    4. Gigi, I am such a fan girl of the Ruth Galloway series. Domenica and I have become friends, and we have a running conversation in which I give her ways to get rid of Michelle, Nelson's wife. She has turned every idea down. Hahaha!

    5. Domenics de Rosa, just found out this was her real name last year. How did she get from ther to Elly Griffith?

      Delete
    6. Ann, the publishers for the Ruth Galloway series didn't think the name Domenica de Rosa would sell mysteries, and she'd written a different kind of book under her real name, so Elly Griffiths was born.

  9. I am drawn to bookstores and libraries. My friends and family know that if they go to a bookstore with me someone will need to put on "Deb alert" because it's a given that I'll lose track of the time. It doesn't work too well with family because all of us got the Reading Gene; we eventually stumble over each other in an aisle, look at our watches and realize either A. It's long past time to eat, or B. The owner/manager really, really wants to go home but is too polite to push us out.

And I can't resist chocolate, especially the darkest of dark chocolate.

  10. Add to the list of Wheat Thin lovers, yes. All things salty - but I also love those salty things paired with sweets. I love potato chips crumbled on top of my vanilla ice cream. I love saltines with apple jelly. Giraffes, especially baby giraffes. A perfect day, for me, is a day at one of my favorite beach bookstores sipping an ice coffee while browsing. Heaven!

    1. That is a new one to me, Kaye, potato chips on vanilla ice cream. I'm intrigued...

  11. Interesting what different things call our name.

My biggest dietary downfall is bread. Fresh bread. Good fresh bed. Especially bread I made my self or artisan bread or -- wait for it -- a baguette from a boulangerie any place in France.

Second dietary love is fish, any fish, prepared anyway but battered. JC knew what he was doing with those loaves and fishes.

Baby anythings, particularly humans, puppies and kittens, but only because those are the ones most often encountered in what used to be my daily walks. I'd add that none of these have to be official babies. Loved kids and animals of all ages. And word to you who write lovely books. Never kill the dog.

Dessert. My sweet tooth is overdeveloped as is my butt. Prefer if nuts are involved, fruit too, and crispy crunchy combined with smooth. A favorite is something my grandmother used to make, gooseberry pie with a side of custard pie. Indescribable combination of flavors.

Any new book by my favorites, most always ordered as soon as I can. What a treat to open up my Kindle and see your latest. When I had small children, back in the day when we took our children everywhere, I told them no toys, maybe no ice cream, but I never said no to a new book, even when I couldn't afford it. I don't say no to me either.

Last but unfortunately not least, I can resist Facebook. Lord knows I've tried, but it is an addiction. Wonder if there's a 12 step program out there?

    1. There almost certainly are anti-addiction programs out there for all kinds of computer addictions, Ann, but seriously, who can resist an electronic newspaper filled with news about all the people you like? And my grandmother gave me a fondness for gooseberry pie. I like sweet things, but they're always better with a touch of tartness.

    2. Oh, Ann. There are few things I love more when eating out than a basket of fresh-from-the-oven bread, which I butter and let it all melt in my mouth.

    3. I absolutely love fresh bread that melts butter. Yum.

  12. I'm with you on water, Ingrid. I'm drawn to any beach. Adore snorkeling. Food wise it would be salt and vinegar potato chips and cherries.

  13. I can't resist anything salty and crunchy. Which added pounds. So now I totally ignore crackers. I could go through a whole box of wheat thins or cheese crackers. Or Goldfish. You get the point. I also can't resist dogs we meet while walking our dog. Got to pet those guys.

  14. I'm with Edith on the glass of wine with a nice lunch. Maybe a good thing I don't go our for nice lunches very often!

And with Ann on the good fresh bread. Oh, the smell!

And good cheese. I adore good cheeses. Manchego is the thing at the moment.

On the non-foody side, I have a really hard time passing up nice fountain pens and journals.

  15. Wheat Thins, yes - the low fat kind though, once I got used to them the full fat kind tasted odd! Beaches absolutely - fine paper journals and notebooks, fountain pens, flowing ink, bookstores. All addictions. Add marinated vegetables to the list (extra vinegar, please) and my list of can't live withouts and will definitely hoard is complete.

  16. Having just had a doctor's appointment late last week, I have medical confirmation that there are a number of things I am failing to be able to resist.

But yes Ingrid, I'm right there with you on Wheat Thins. I rarely buy them for the house because I am so good at laying waste to a box of them. That said, when I go out to my local lunch spot on Saturdays (or any other day I happen to stop by there), I get my tall cool glass of strawberry lemonade ordered and when Jen the Bartender brings me my drink, she lays down two bowls of the cheese and crackers that I love so much. The crackers being Wheat Thins (obviously, or this story would make no sense).

And then there are Reese's Peanut Butter Cups...which we shall not dive into much detail, lest I be tempted to head out to the store and buy some. But when a store puts them on big discount sale, there I am scooping up a bunch because, you know, they are just so damn tasty!

Books seem to be something I can't resist, judging by my ever growing TBR piles.

    2. Yes, the mini ones are probably the worst of the size offerings because you eat a whole bag thinking, well there only small ones...

  17. In the area of addictions, I have to start out with books, as every room in my house, except the bathrooms and the kitchen scream "The person living here is a book nut." One part of my obsession with books, which has developed in the last few years, is obtaining my favorite authors' hardback copies of their series books. Debs, there is a vendor at Bouchercon, whose name now escapes me, but who has used books, and I have been using him to collect your series in hardback. I need to check and see what all I still need. Of course, I will eventually need to get them signed, if not already done.

I have a coffee obsession, which I gladly share with Kaye, and we have a picture of each of us at Daisy Dukes in New Orleans holding up a cup of their wonderful coffee with a jazz trumpeter in a painting on the wall beside us. Ann reminded me of my obsession with bread, mostly hot fresh bread with butter, but I can also eat just a piece of regular bread and butter and enjoy it. And, I should also add butter to the list of addiction. My motto is "everything is bettah with buttah." I try not to buy milk chocolate M&Ms, because they are such a temptation. I only buy cheese puffs about once every two or three months because, well one leads to another leads to an empty bag. And, really melted cheese over anything is sure to be gobbled up by me. I love spaghetti, and I can even eat it without sauce. Macaroni and cheese in the Kraft original box is in my top five food loves. Crab cakes and salmon patties are favorite seafood, although cobia fish found in the waters around Key West is my favorite fish. Don't look for it on the restaurant menus there (unless things have changed) though, because from what I was told, those catching it catch it for their own use. I had it for Christmas Eve dinner one year when my daughter lived in Key West, and they went fishing that day for it. Lucy, do you all eat cobia ever? And, as far as food goes, I guess a good cheeseburger is a thing of beauty, although they aren't really an addiction. Fried eggs are.

On to my addition or obsession with goats. Many of my friends on FB know of this obsession of mine and post wonderful goat pictures on my page. The baby goats are completely irresistible, but I love the grown goats, too. Now, something I came across this summer has me tickled pink. It's a site called "You've Goat Mail," and you can choose between two stuffed animal goats, a Billy Goat and a Nubian, to send to someone to brighten their day. I haven't sent one yet, but it's only a matter of time. The site also has an adorable cow and whale available, but it's the goats I goatta have.

And, then there's my obsession with coffee mugs. Oh dear. I collect one from wherever or whenever I go on a vacation, and I have a Starbucks collection, too, from the Starbucks in different cities. My last one was from the Starbucks at Universal Studios in Florida. They have the location on the mugs. OK, I'm going to quit now. I'm beginning to sound like a really addicted personality. But, as Popeye (another addiction) says, "I yam what I yam."

    3. No, it's not Mystery Mike, although I always buy a ton from him, too. I'll see if I can find the business card.

  18. Books and bookstores are obviously on my list. I didn't even think about it because they fall into the "can't survive without" category with breathing, eating, sleeping, etc.
