Saturday Interlude from What We're Writing!

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: So...Saturday here, we THINK it's Saturday, and the world remains bizarre.

To illustrate just HOW bizarre, this is my back yard today.

The last of the tulips..and the darling ducks having breakfast. This is Left-Banded Duck and Eddy2.

And it is also: snowing. Can you see that? Watch again.

I almost said--where is the invasion of locusts?

But I guess that's on the way. With the murder hornets.

You all okay? Check in!

  3. Snowy and cold. The frost got my beautiful tulips last night, but how important is that in the whole scheme of things?

I’m noticing that I get up in a pretty good mood that deteriorates during the day. By bedtimes I’m in a funk. Anyone else doing this? And I’m not even looking at my financial reports!

I did register for the crowd cast, Edith. See you there.

    1. Now THAT is interesting! The frost GOT them? Ohhhh, SO awful. I am so sorry.

And my moods definitely swing: from fine, to sad, to SO SAD, to ENRAGED.

  4. Things are fine. It is 69 degrees right now. So much nicer than the 90 we had earlier. How do you drain the water off the tarp when you’re ready to open the pool? Just curious!

    1. There's a pump thing that drains it. Then--the magic arrival of the pool guys and voila! Pool. Although we are stalling this year. Seems like a weird/scary? thing to have a swimming pool.

  5. I'm fine. Relieved to finally catch the blog. Hope everybody is well.
Again snowing here with wind and cold weather but it's OK, it will pass, hopefully in a near future.

  6. Karen mentioned to me off site that the journey of a 1000 miles begins with a single step. She didn't mention the first step was up a HILL. Yes, Red's the gov in his infinite wisdom has said we can go outside now. My .3 mile walk included the block to the south, 5 cars and no barking dogs. It is now 85 degrees with a low humidity. "nuff said, y'all have pretty flowers.. I get bamboo.

We are still all well on Nome St. After talking it over, we decided to continue to shelter in place except for my daily walk. I had a flight of fancy (pun intended) and booked a flight to Maryland.
I have already rescheduled the flight, and will continue to do this until travel is safer. A few friends had so much fun making masks that they are sharing them with us.

I am getting caught up on my reviewing (HINT to HPR ) I have reviewed about 15-20 titles since the quarantine started. The fun now is dropping in on your book promotions. I am delighted to see that all of you above and below the line are doing so well.

In honor of your snow storm, I am making home made chicken noodle soup. will share ... anyone?

  7. Frost on the grass, frost-nipped hostas and emerging magnolia blossoms. Heading out to weed followed by washing and "styling" my hair so I don't scare my kids during tomorrow's group Face Time.

  8. Hank! Thanks for checking in. I just finished a live Zoom class with my Bar Method class in Berkeley. Yes, Julia, there is a Bar Method in Portland, Maine. I checked on Instagram. We are hanging in there!

  9. Snow here too. 75 degrees on Tuesday, snow Wed. Warmish Thursday, snow again Friday. This is why some of the nurseries here refuse to let you take home the plants you've bought any earlier than Mother's Day. They'll take your money but tell you to come back after May 15th to pick up your order. Life can be different here in these mountains.

  10. Snow. Yes. Sigh. But it's all gone now and I hope we've seen the last of the brrrr. I'm ready to throw open the windows, let some air and sunshine in!

  11. Yes, it snowed yesterday and we have snow flurries today, along with a wicked wind. It feels like MARCH 9 not May 9!

  12. No snow. There might be some that would think it was the end of the world if it's snowed here in San Francisco Bay Area, in May, during of the middle of a pandemic.

  13. Shalom Reds and fans. Just checking in. I am fine. But it seems, I don’t get to read the blog till the middle of the afternoon. It seems that as everyone has been fired or furloughed, I have gone back to work. I am working part-time in a nursery. The Penn State (Agricultural) Extension warns that in our area, the last day of possible recorded frost is May 15 or more commonly Mother’s Day. Well, it was a sustained 32 degrees last night. All of us worked very hard yesterday to get the vulnerable plants out of harm’s way, but there are only so many safe places to put hundreds of endangered plants. This is my first year doing this; however, it has not been a good year for selling plants. To start, people are “staying at home”. Then, it’s been rainy and cold all Spring. Last weekend though, we thought the year was still redeemable, because it was so nice, warm and sunny that the plants flew off the tables. Today, we were just trying to figure out how to best save the plants from tonight’s repeated and expected cold. Today it was my job to water some of the thirstier plants like some ferns and some gardenias. Even though it was 40 degrees by that time, my gloves and my waterproof boots were thoroughly drenched after a half-hour of that. My hands didn’t warm up till I arrived home. My boss heard me lusting after some plants (tradescantia pallida) offered me a gift of two plants, worth $7.96 at the register. A crime that theoretically could land us both in federal prison, he for offering the said purloined plants as a bribe and me for accepting it.
Just know that I read everyone’s posts on JRW, just not until the late afternoon.
