Whatcha Watching?

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: What are you watching? It seems like there was a big dearth of good stuff on TV for a while, but now, suddenly, so many fun things!

Pluribus, for one, from the same people who brought you Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, two iconic shows, a wonderful thought-provoking speculative fiction which I think is about AI. In a way. But mostly about the necessity for individual thought, and would you trade your individuality if you could 1.Know everything and 2. Be happy. It stars Rhea Seahorn as a writer, and in episode one, writer alert, there is a scene at a Barnes & Noble signing that will live in infamy. I love love love the show.

Also, another writer show, The Beast in Me. With Clare Danes as a writer who is looking for a good topic, and Matthew Rhys as…the possible topic. It is, I think, about the unrelenting urge for a best selling novel, and how far you would go to get one. How much of your moral compass do you give up to write something that would be a blockbuster? And does that desire warp your objectivity?

And did you see The House of Dynamite? I absolutely adored it, kind of a doomsday thriller, but many people did not. We cannot discuss it here, because the way it ends is so incredibly controversial. If you have just seen it, tell me, and we can talk off stage.

We’re also watching Invasion, which is surprisingly great. And beginning to watch the Ken Burns documentary on the American Revolution. And even The Rainmaker, which I fear is so dumb, but I love lawyer shows, so we are watching. And I cannot wait for the Lincoln Lawyer to come back!

I know there’s something I’m missing – – maybe you will let me know! (We generally only watch one episode of something a night, so it takes us a while!)

HALLIE EPHRON: I’m watching “The Diplomat” on Netflix and enjoying it quite a bit. And of course, just finished the latest Great British Baking Show… The winner this time so fabulous and every one of the bakers is awe inspiring.

I missed The Lincoln Lawyer (loved the books) so far so I’ll have to catch up on that. I’m watching Ballard on Amazon Prime (also by Connolly) and Keri Russell is superb but intense. I need to take it in bite sized chunks.

DEBORAH CROMBIE: We just finished THE DIPLOMAT a couple of nights ago. I loved Aidan Turner as a new addition to the cast, but don’t dare say anything more! And we finished THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW as well. I am so sad that it’s over and we no longer have it to look forward to on Friday nights. Such a great season and all the finalists were terrific.

We’ve been watching Graham Norton on Acorn, such fun. Acorn has the full episodes, not just the “best bits” that they show on Netflix. I also don’t know that Netflix is showing any of those from the new season.

We’re hunting for a new series, but I think I’d really like to catch up on some movies. Suggestions welcome!

RHYS BOWEN: like Hallie I am missing Great British Baking show. We’ve been watching the new Maigret. But prefer Rowan Atkinson in the role a few years ago.

Waiting for the next Luther!

LUCY BURDETTE: I’m so lame lame lame on this topic. Still plugging through NYPD Blue, and watching the PBS newshour as much as I can stand! John is pleased about the new season of Blue Lights, and he’s also started the Ken Burns Documentary. We may dabble in Pluribus, Hank…

JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: I’ll join Lucy in being the non-watcher this time around. Not so much because there’s a dearth of good stuff streaming, but because we’re in the season where I keep the rest of the house cold and snuggle close to the wood stove in the kitchen. (When the outdoor temps get seriously cold, the furnace goes ON and my TV room is toasty again.)

That being said, I started The American Revolution documentary while on the road for book tour and am finding it absolutely fascinating. It reminds me that I’ve missed several Ken Burns documentaries from recent years, and now I want to catch up!

JENN MCKINLAY: Hub and I just finished The Diplomat - loved it. We’re now watching Nobody Wants This - hilarious! Like Hank and Jonathan, we watch one episode a night so it takes us awhile, too. On my own, I just finished the K-Drama The Potato Lab - Adorbs!

HANK: Yes, yes, The Diplomat. Brilliant! And it felt to me that the writers had a plan, you know? That they knew exactly where they were going. Although I had NO idea, and was in awe.

And earlier this week, Catriona mentioned the Great British Sewing Bee. I looked it up, and it is on the BBC. Cannot wait to see it!

How about you, Reds and Readers? What’s on YOUR screen?

ALSO! So wonderful to see so many of you yesterday! It was actually..inspirational. Truly! And at one point, the blogging software stopped me from responding to any more of your comments, and even stopped my from entering my own! I guess it thought I was a bot.
But since I am NOT a bot, I will try again today!
And you can be sure, even if I was not "allowed" to respond, I read every single one of your wonderful comments..and I am still floating!

  1. Like many have already noted, Ken Burns' "The American Revolution" is simply amazing [but, in all honesty, I cannot think of a Ken Burns program that wasn't wonderful] . . . .

  2. I wondered why your comments just stopped, Hank. Yesterday’s blog conversation was incredible. Over 200 comments! Wow!

We finished the latest season of Slow Horses Friday night and have two episodes of The Diplomat to go. We watched the new version of Margret (I’d never seen any other version) and liked it. We’re almost done with The Gold on PBS and have to watch the newest (2nd?) season of The Moonflower Murders. I have had A House of Dynamite recommended to me by multiple people. Admittedly we watch streaming channels more than network TV, but we have watched a couple of episodes of the new series, DMV. It’s pretty funny. (I think I need to start a TBW - To Be Watched - list to keep track of all of the recommendations we’re going to get today!). — Pat S

    1. Yes, I loved it, too, but it's STILL not letting me comment on that blog! I am seriously banned! Yes, Moonflower Murders, of course! I have not watched Maigret--sounds like I should!

  3. Is anyone watching the Korean series Bon Appetit, Your Majesty? It's about a 27 year old Michelin-star chef who somehow falls into the Korea of 500 years ago. She has to cook for the cruel emperor to save her life. Part fairy tale, part foodie show.
We're also watching Maigret-- so modern & intense. My mother, who loved the original books, would not recognize it.

  4. I also loved the long roll call, Hank - thanks for doing it!

We also loved the Diplomat. We tried to watch The Beast in Me but it was too dark for both of us. Now we're watching Four Seasons - fun, with a great cast.

  5. I began watching the new Ken Burns documentary on the American Revolution and it's great. Irwin is watching it every night. Otherwise, I only watch local news then return to reading.

  6. I know I'm the only person in the world who grew to dislike The Diplomat. I think Keri Russell overacts and although, yes, the show is well done, it's just a soap opera. And to be really picky, I can't stand Russell's uncombed hair. Yes, I know it's part of her character, but I think she looks unkempt and I do not believe for a second that any woman in any position of power could get away with such a sloppy look. Not to be a spoiler, but also - what was the point about the condom scene and what was the point of the sex scene with the British Prime Minister and his wife????

  8. Not much on the watching front here, but your description of Pluribus got me thinking about Timothy Snyder's take on AI and on algorithms. He counsels us to "be unpredictable" and do our own thinking. I like that.

  9. We enjoyed the new Maigret. Now watching Silent Witness (Britbox) with the new girl. Have to wait a while for the next 2 episodes to drop. Also watching reruns of Lynley – can’t stand the new series. We have Crave which carries HBO for another week – I refuse to pay their fee and still have more and more ads – so catching up on a lot of their HBO documentaries. I think we may sign up for Netflix after Christmas, so that will open a whole new group of shows. Hope PBS carries the British GBBO soon – drooling as I read you all have watched it!

  10. What am I watching? Sit back, this may take a while.

FBI, Watson, NCIS, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney, High Potential, Shifting Gears, Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Ghosts, Elsbeth, Matlock, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Happy's Place, Boston Blue,

Will be watching when they start their new seasons: Will Trent, The Rookie

And that is just stuff airing new. My list of rewatches is varied and quite numerous too. Oh, I'm trying to force myself to finish the current seasons of Wednesday and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. I've not liked either of the new seasons so far but I'm trying to soldier onward and finish them out.

  11. I've heard good things about the Ken Burns documentary, so I may have to look it up.

"The Diplomat" is on our Netflix list, but I can never get The Hubby interested it it.

I see the third season of "Dark Wind" is finally on Netflix, so we'll be watching that for sure.

Not a show, but we saw a movie called "The Little White Lie" last night. About a guy pretending to be a famous reclusive writer. I wasn't sure about it, but The Hubby Loved it.

Waiting for "The Lincoln Lawyer" and more "Department Q."

We've been watching a series on Amazon called "The Chosen." It's about the three years of Jesus's public ministry, but it's almost more about the lives of his followers (I can't say apostles, because it includes three women). Which of course would be all made up because there isn't a written record, but it was done based on historical research into the culture of the times, so I think it's pretty realistic. It was started with a GoFundMe, but the production values are quite high. I was more taken in than I thought I'd be.

  12. Claire Danes has come a long way since "My So-Called Life", hasn't she?

I am so behind, between traveling and spending time with my mom (who I watch Hallmark movies with). So I am now on S2 of Karen Pirie, at the episode where she gets herself in big trouble. Still slogging away at Granchester, and getting fed up with Will's self-indulgence and self-pity. I only hope it gets better. And waiting for the new season of Shakespeare and Hathaway, which is an enjoyable mystery series.

I also saw that Deadloch's second season starts soon, with the two main characters getting to leave Tasmania and go solve crimes in northern Australia. The first season was epic, but the air turned blue with the foul language from the (female) detective Eddie. Be forewarned.

    2. Will, after he got married. He is by far my least favorite of the vicars. Not to my taste at all, but he sure chews up the scenery. At least he's easier on the eyes than Father Brown. LOL I'm so shallow.

Since I flew for several hours this week, I watched all three episodes of Kathy Bates's Matlock, which is SO good, if a teensy bit unbelievable. And I started The Gilded Age, which is delicious, but I will probably not watch the next episodes for awhile, since we are not going to add another streaming service until Ted Lasso and Shrinking come out with their new seasons.

      Delete
    3. The Gilded Age! I am riveted to that, devoted, because I think it is so poorly written, even that cast can't save it. Or the fabulous clothes. And the sets seem so fake. And yet, I cannot wait to watch more episodes!

    4. HANK: I've been catching up on episodes from CALL THE MIDWIFE, one of my favourites. And ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL on PBS Passport. Watching DEAF PRESIDENT NOW again on Apple + TV.

Watching THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB again on Netflix. I've been watching cute Christmas movies on Netflix. One of my favourites - THE HOLIDAY - is gone from Netflix and I'm hoping Netflix will bring it back.

    5. Karen, I’m curious, why would you stay with slogging? Granchester is NOT a requirement for graduation? With a wink and a nod. Elisabeth

    6. I haven't tried the newest vicar. I didn't like Sidney and hated Will, so could he be worse? I'd read the James Runcie books (which are delightful) and Sidney Chambers would never have behaved like the TV Sidney.

    7. Elisabeth, I love the other characters and their storylines, but Will is just not appealing to me. He seems like a less handsome and less charming version of Sidney, and one tortured soul is plenty. But the other storylines are more my taste.

  14. I’m not much of a TV watcher these days. We only have Netflix as an add-on to our regular zillion channel cable with not much actually to watch. The Diplomat is wonderful! Two episodes at a time is about all I can take. Lots of PBS, Right now we have The Brokenwood Mysteries, set in New Zealan, which I love, and Midsomer Murders -I’m surprised there are still any people left to murder after all these seasons! Kens Burns’ The American Revolution is a must. He is definitely a national treasure. I think this series should be required watching for every student over the age of 15. Not to mention our “leaders”. I have noted on my calendar that the new Feorge Clooney movie “Jay Kelly” starts on Netflix December 5th. Also a movie recommended in the Financial Times a couple of weeks aho “Left-Handed Girl” starts on Netflix next Friday. Meanwhile ai have books to get to!

  16. For those who are missing The Great British Baking Show, there are two new holiday episodes for you right now on Netflix--Christmas and New Year's. I've watched the Christmas episode, and the contestants are actors from British soap operas (better bakers than they think!!). These two were recorded and shown in the UK a year ago, but it's the first we've seen them in the US. Also, the second season of A Man on the Inside with Ted Danson just dropped on Netflix, and I believe you can watch all of the episodes at your leisure. I loved the first season. Also, it was a surprise to me that the latest season of the UK's version of The Traitors--this one featuring all celebrities--is now available on Peacock. I'm not sure if all the episodes are there, or if it is doled out each week. I am excited about all three shows. Also, I will be rewatching Wicked on TV before I see the new Wicked: For Good at the movies on December 2. I am backed up on The Amazing Race, Matlock, and High Potential. I'm looking forward to the third in the Knives Out films, which will be at the movies soon but on Netflix in January, I believe. I'm especially looking forward to the return of Will Trent in January, plus The Lincoln Lawyer, Shrinking and, of course, Ted Lasso.

  17. We just finished the season for BEYOND PARADISE, a spin off from Death in Paradise, but BP is set in a charming town in England. Have to figure out how I can watch The Great British Baking Show, we only get Acorn and BritBox. My hub loved the first episode of Ken Burns' The AMERICAN REVOLUTION. I've been watching HOUSE HUNTERS INTERNATIONAL (but the pre-scripted dialog that the house hunters keep repeating is a little annoying) and especially like the shows set in the UK. Is PLURIBUS supposed to be confusing? is it supposed to be like the TWILIGHT ZONE?

    1. Ah, well...theoretically, and without spoilers, I THINK it's thematically an examination of the joys and difficulties of individuality, and supposed to make us think about what we'd give up to be "happy" but only as part of a hive mind. If you lost your individual imagination and creativity, but had everyone else's, would that be good? If you could make everyone happy and safe and fed, but have to kill random millions of people to do it, would you do that?
As to WHY this is happening in the show, I have no idea!
Yes, it;'s sort of like Twilight Zone in that you just have to let go and accept that this is what's happening, and go from there. Eager to see the next episode. I don't think we're supposed to "understand" it, yet. I hope. xx

  24. My husband and I are like greedy children with Slow Horses. Every season we binge watch and then sit around pouting because there aren't any more episodes. I have mixed feelings about Pluribus. There is a glaring anomaly in episode three that's so ridiculous that I'm not sure I can watch more. Not a Clare Danes fan, but will have to at least start The Beast. Really enjoying Down Cemetery Road. Complex, as Mick Herron's plots often are. Loved Department Q and can't wait for the next one. Also read the book, which is different and just as good. No One Wants This is cute (damning with faint praise?), but kind of a one-trick pony. Watched All Her Fault and will never get those last two hours back. 28. Rhys mentioned that they were watching the new Maigret series. We also watched it but agree whole heartedly with her that the original Maigret with Rowan Atkinson is the better version. The new Maigret character always seems to be disconnected and distant as well as always brooding. I also loved the original Inspector Lynley series with Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small. The clash of the two characters cultural and class differences played off each other perfectly. Those two flawless actors were a match made in heaven; I loved every second of this series. The new version...not so much. I'd rather rewatch the original series. On regular network television I waver on whether I consistently enjoy the Elsbeth show or not; sometimes the character not only wears me down but annoys me as well. Perhaps though that's the whole point of the show. But Kathy Bates in the Matlock series is true entertainment. There's nothing that actress can't do; she's fabulous. As for replacing the much missed Blue Bloods series cancelled by CBS after 15 glorious seasons with the spinoff Boston Blue the jury is still out on that one. While it's great fun to see all the wonderful scenes shot in my hometown city of Boston it has been a challenge adjusting to new characters on the show. I do admire Donnie Wahlberg's commitment to have the weekly family dinners as well as strong family ties as the show's foundation but I miss Tom Selleck whose powerful presence on Blue Bloods was the show's stability.
