Annette Dashofy--When Sidekicks Take Over

DEBORAH CROMBIE:  We have a "favorite author" bonus for you here on Jungle Red today! Just back in October Annette Dashofy was on the blog, sharing the third novel in her Detective Matthias Honeywell series, THE DEVIL COMES CALLING.

And now there is fourth Detective Honeywell, NO STONE LEFT UNTURNED! How lucky are we to have another book in this terrific series! This one has a super premise, too, as Annette will explain!

When Sidekicks Take Over

 Annette Dashofy

Fictional sidekicks come in all forms, shapes, and sizes from Snoopy to Robin to Chewbacca to Dr. Watson. If you think about it, what would our favorite heroes be without them. Charlie Brown without his beagle? Batman with no Robin? Who besides Chewy would put up with Han Solo? And Sherlock would be intolerable without Dr. Watson.

I think it’s safe to say, as readers and viewers, we love our sidekicks. As writers, we love them, too.

Generally, when we’re creating our cast for a new book or series, each character tends to have their own specific “purpose” within the story. Protagonist AKA hero, love interest, mentor, villain, and the previously mentioned sidekick. Often one character takes on dual roles. A sidekick might also become the hero’s love interest. Think Pepper Potts in the Iron Man movies. Lois Lane might fit the category as well. A sidekick might also be a mentor. Or as in the Star Wars example above, they can provide comic relief.

And sometimes, the sidekicks or other secondary characters outgrow their small roles to become fan favorites. It’s almost as though they don’t realize they’re only sidekicks.

For instance, Pete’s father Harry in my Zoe Chambers mysteries was never meant to appear beyond the end of Lost Legacy, which was the second in the thirteen-book series. Readers, though, kept hounding me. When’s Harry coming back? How’s Harry doing? We want more Harry!

It took a while, but I did find several more stories for dear Harry.

Something similar has been happening with my Detective Honeywell mysteries. In this case, Detective Sergeant Cassie Malone is Matthias Honeywell’s partner. She’s older, taller, and carries a higher rank, all of which she never lets him forget. From the very beginning, I’ve described her as part Amazon warrior, part mother hen. She’s also better with people than he is. But Matthias knows Cassie has his back no matter what.

She’s been a great counterpoint to him in so many ways. Matthias dates frequently, but rarely (until he meets Emma Anderson, that is) gets to a second date. Cassie has been happily married to a veterinarian for decades and is raising her 8-year-old granddaughter whose mother (Cassie’s military daughter) is deployed overseas.

It’s been a blast writing her as the Wise One of the pair.

While it was never my intention, it became a natural progression to give her a featured role in No Stone Left Unturned, my fourth Detective Honeywell Mystery. Instead of simply being a smart, savvy cop, we get to see her deal with tragedy in her own family. She’s still tough, but she’s also vulnerable. Forced to sit on the sidelines in an investigation into her husband’s shooting, she must rely on Matthias and the rest of the police force to do what she’s used to doing—tracking down the bad guy. And we get to meet the rest of the Malone family, who up until now have only been mentioned in passing.

And ultimately, we get to see Cassie as a victim. Will she be tough enough to save herself?

You’ll have to wait to find out!

I’ve had a lot of fun shifting much of the focus and storyline to a secondary character and getting to flesh her out. How about you, Reds? When have you brought a sidekick or minor recurring character to the forefront of the action? And, readers, do you enjoy getting to know more about the peripheral members of the cast? Are there sidekicks you would like to see more of?

DEBS: I have certainly had my sidekicks decide they want to be major characters! Looking at you, Melody Talbot and Doug Cullen!

Here's more about NO STONE LEFT UNTURNED:

When a local Erie vet is shot during a robbery, Erie City Police Detective Matthias Honeywell and his partner Cassie Malone are tasked with pursuing the perpetrators. But as they close in on the truth, a mysterious sniper targets those involved in the case.

Emma Anderson has seen more than her share of cases since becoming a journalist in Lake Erie, and with news of the shooting becoming local interest, her instincts kick in. What she didn’t expect to uncover was a secret that could cause an ethical dilemma between Matthias and Cassie.

As the search for the sniper continues and the investigation taking a dark turn, Cassie and Emma find themselves caught up in a kidnapping plot. As the women are forced to draw on their resourcefulness to survive, will they manage to escape or is time against them?

I can't wait to find out!

  1. A new Detective Honeywell book is always a treat, Annette . . . I'm looking forward to reading it. It's always fun to learn something new about the characters we've come to care about . . . .

  2. What a great ways to explore topics and character development that might not be a great match for the usual main character.

    1. Absolutely, Lisa. It's also fun seeing how a main character deals with being cast in more of a sidekick role.

  3. Annette, I just finished reading THE DEVIL COMES CALLING, third book in the Honeywell series and it is terrific. The title fits perfectly. Positively diabolical.

I really love the character, Cassie and am eager to read more about her life and meet her family, even though it sounds like you torture her in this book. As for secondary characters taking starring roles in a series, it is fun to see them blossom. My copy should be in my Kindle.

  4. Hi Annette! I'm so behind in my reading but I know that I will be able to binge both books when I'm finally caught up. I love sidekicks as they tend to make the protagonist more human.

  5. Congratulations on the new book, Annette - I can't keep up (but I will)!

Several of my sidekicks have stepped forward to take over occasional books. Aunt Adele in the Country Store series certainly did. In fact, when I decided to end that series, my editor offered me a new one featuring her (in the same setting). I ended up declining, mostly because I couldn't figure out how to make it different enough from the original, but I'm still questioning my decision.

    1. I understand questioning your decision, Edith, but I believe if Aunt Adele had any great stories of her own to tell, she wouldn't have let you decline that offer.

    2. Edith - Aunt Adele takes a vacation to England where she visits a tea shop in a quaint English countryside town by the sea (or ?) and befriends the retiring owner and decides to stay and take over.

  6. Annette, congrats! I haven't started this series yet, but it looks like I've got plenty of good reading awaiting me. My favorite series are those in which sidekicks are just as vital and interesting as the main character. And I love it when minor characters step forward and say, hey, I've got stories to tell, too! When an author engages me in this way--fully fleshing out those sidekicks so that they're as interesting and integral to stories as the protagonist, I'm hooked!

  7. Congratulations on the new book! I also haven't started this series yet, mostly because my library doesn't have it. (They do have the Zoe Chambers books.) So this morning I got inspired and ordered the first of the series for my Kindle, so I can begin to catch up. I can tell by the descriptions and other people's reactions that I am going to love them.

  8. Yes, congratulations, Annette! How did you end up with two books out so close together? It's a great treat for readers, but you must have been writing like mad. (Or like Jenn:-)

    1. Ha! Not really, Debs. The Devil Comes Calling was originally supposed to come out LAST winter, but for some reason, they decided to pull it and release these two back-to-back.

    2. Annette, since Devil Comes Calling was supposed to be released last year, does it matter the order in which we read them? I’m a bit OCD about reading series in order. — Pat S

    3. Pat, The Devil Comes Calling is still #3 in the series and No Stone Left Unturned is #4. (FWIW, the first in the series is Where The Guilty Hide, and the second is Keep Your Family Close.

  9. Annette, so excited to hear about book 4 in the Honeywell series! I find it fascinating when sidekicks decide they want to tell a bit more of their story. I think it adds weight and understanding to why partnerships, families, etc. work well - or not. I am waiting for my library to order The Devil Comes Calling as well as No Stone Left Unturned. In the meanwhile, they do have What Comes Around in Zoe's series which suits me just fine! -- Victoria

    1. Victoria, tell your library there are options to get them in print. They can order from Gardner's (a UK distributor much like Ingrams), or from Amazon, or best of all, from Mystery Lovers Bookshop online. And thank you!

  10. Congratulations Annette. This was a great read. As one of the Cassie fans, I was so happy to learn more about her life outside of the job. Matthias is a better LEO and a person thanks to Cassie. Looking forward to discovering what is next for Det. Honeywell.

  11. Hi, Annette! So delighted to see you here again!! Your thoughts on sidekicks strike a strong chord with me. I always think of a sidekick as yin to the protagonist's yang. Ordering my copy of NO STONE LEFT UNTURNED right now.

  14. I'm so delighted to see Annette here today. She's a favorite author and a great friend. I know I've probably said it every time Annette has been on here, but her Zoe Chambers series saved my sanity during the lockdown of 2020. I had just started them and started getting to know Annette, and I was so lucky to have Zoe and Pete to fill the hours of being stuck at home. I also love the Matthias Honeywell series. It's Lake Erie setting really appeals to me, as my family used to go there in the summers when I was a kid. Cassie has rightfully earned a story, and I can't wait to read this one. If I wasn't so behind, it would already be done and dusted on my list. Thanks for visiting the Reds today, Annette. I'll be sharing it on my FB page when I get back from PT. I'll also be back to comment on some minor characters from others who have gotten my attention. Off to PT for my knee now.

    3. My knee is actually doing great. They measure your knee for knee flexion (bending), and I reached that on Tuesday of this week and 121 today. That's three weeks out from my surgery, and 120 is more like a six-week goal (or so says Dr. Google), so I'm healing extremely well. Also, my measurement they take of my leg straight is 0 degrees, which is the goal period. I've been driving since my second week and haven't used a cane since end of first week, beginning of second, except I do use a can when I go to the cemetery because the ground is uneven in places. I was always a fast healer, but since I'm 71 now, I wasn't sure that would still hold true for me. I am so relieved it is. Now, I have to avoid falls so I can benefit from this success. However, my balance is already better. When I can fit in some water aerobics, I plan on doing that. My daughter teaches water aerobics, but it's an 45 minutes away, so I don't think I'll go with her. Next week I continue with my PT (maybe last week), but we have to go to Lexington the end of the week for our last court date before the trial starts on Jan. 12th for Kevin's murderer. That's why I don't know when I can do the water aerobics.

  15. I remember being all set read book 3 last year only to be thwarted by your publisher when they delayed its publication by almost a year. And I can't wait for book number 4 to arrive on Friday. I do like with sidekicks get their own stories but them I miss them in the following books when they sit on the sidelines again.

  16. Hi Annette! I like the idea of you appearing at the top of the blog with a new release every few months! I agree with Dru Ann’s comment: sidekicks make the protagonist more human. It’s like seeing a co-worker outside of work. You see the person underneath the role they play at work. — Pat S

  18. Always a good day to find out about a new Annette Dashofy book! Congratulations, dear friend.

Sidekicks makes the main character seem more real, because actual humans rarely operate in a bubble of one. Your characters are all so well drawn, too. It's like visiting with friends, and sharing in their adventures.

  19. Annette, I love the premise of NO STONE LEFT UNTURNED, and I love that we get to see Cassie out of her usual comfort zone. Secondary characters are the great gift from the author's unconscious - we think we're writing a sidekick or a one-off, but it turns out they have SO MUCH more story in them!

  20. I'm back as I said I would be earlier. I just couldn't resist naming some of my favorite sidekicks or minor characters in the Reds' books and another one or two. I'll have to start with Miss Gloria, who has become a super star for Lucy, as everyone loves Miss Gloria's spunk and fortitude at her age. Then there's Queenie in Rhys' Royal Spyness books. If you look her up in Google, here is how Queenie is described, and it's perfect. "Queenie is a well-meaning but generally incompetent and accident-prone character, known for her inability to speak properly or remember to address Georgie as "My Lady"." Julia, I'm hoping, with all the "stuff" coming up, I get to read At Midnight Comes the Cry. With Kevin Flynn and Hadley Knox in it, I am champing at the bit to see what happens with sidekick/minor character Kevin. Debs, you might just be the Queen of sidekick/minor characters who demand attention and get plenty of it from readers. Melody and Doug have certainly planted themselves in the hearts and minds of your readers, and there always seems to be others, Andy Monahan and Erika Rosenthal. Hallie and Hank, there is often a nefarious nature to your sidekicks or minor characters who work stealthily for an outcome outside the main character's best interests. In Careful What You Wish For, Emily Harlow's husband is quite the twist of character whom we don't want to see again. Hank, The Wrong Girl has always stuck in my mind because of Jane Ryland's friend Tucker Cameron, who draws Jane into a colassal mess involving and adoption agency. Jenn, I've started your Library Lover's series, and I'm looking forward to how much of a part Sully plays. And, of course, the new book, Witches of Dubious Origin, is going to have someone who Zoe comes to rely upon. And, Annette, I've come to really enjoy County Detective Wayne Baronick working with Pete and Wayne's sister who proves she is plenty smart and capable, too.
