The Beautiful Mystery was especially moving and filled one with a calm sense of the world too often not realized. I have since listened to plainchant recordings on YouTube and my soul is filled with awe. The descriptions of the monastery, the monks, their work, the beautiful rainbow sunlight, the smells of the food they cooked, and the chants, took me away to that solitary place. In our world of constant noise, this book certainly makes one realize how much we sometimes need silence. Just to be in that ancient chapel and listen to the chants, then to sit in silence and consider who is actually speaking to your soul. What a beautiful gift, and a beautiful mystery. Louise, having been a fan of yours since Still Life, I always look forward to your new releases and have *never* been disappointed.

I'm totally with you on the music as a drug idea. In fact, I named my first iPod with that theory in mind. Gave it a Gaelic name that means "fun," Craik. It's pronounced "crack." I'm always intrigued by writers who use music as part of their processes, especially novel soundtracks. But I always get to wondering (Gregorian chants aside because given your story setting what other soundtrack would go?) whether writers who use soundtracks are music aficionados, have huge CD collections, etcetera.

I guess I'm wondering what the process of creating a novel soundtrack is...but maybe I find it difficult to imagine because I'm not a music aficionado? Looking forward to reading this new book, and intrigued by the subject matter.

What is the name of the monastery you recommend to visitors? Just in case I get a chance to go to Quebec, you know.

Growing up Catholic in the 50's and 60's, and singing in the choir from fifth through tenth grades, I always loved the Gregorian chants. They are so soothing and solemnly lovely, in particular when sung in a beautiful holy space like the church we attended then, or gothic cathedrals like Notre Dame. Soaring spaces are made for chants, aren't they?

Best of luck with the new book!
