What We're Watching

DEBORAH CROMBIE: Now that we're all up to speed on our reading and our TBR lists/stacks are ever more burgeoning, it's time for a look at what's on the tube for when we can tear ourselves away from our books.

From the reality TV queen here, we are glued to the new season of GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF–oh, sorry, GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW, as we're supposed to call it in the US, although that doesn't have nearly the same ring as GBBO. My non-cooking, non-baking hubby is now hooked and keeps asking me, "When's the baking show on again?" (Some of his enthusiam this season might have to do with one very cute contestant...) He's also gotten hooked on THE VOICE, my other reality TV indulgence, but is not so keen on the little bits I can manage to snag of the UK's STRICTLY COME DANCING on VPNs. (Shhh, don't tell.)

And now back to crime. In the lull between summer programming and new autumn stuff, we pulled up a UK series from 2003 called STATE OF PLAY. We couldn't find it streaming but it is available on DVD and Blu-ray, and I can't recommend it highly enough. The writing! The cast! It was directed by David Yates and featured David Morrisey, John Simm, James McAvoy, Bill Nighy, Kelly McDonald, Polly Walker, and more. Even more than twenty years later, it doesn't feel dated, and it's one of the best things I've ever watched on television. They made a movie of it a couple of years later starring Russell Crowe, but that doesn't begin to compare to the original 6 part series. (That's a very unflattering photo of the Scottish actress Kelly McDonald, who I adore, on the DVD cover. Most recently you will have seen her as Carl Mork's therapist on DEPT Q!)

We're watching SLOW HORSES, although the weekly dole-out formula is especially annoying with the complicated storylines in this series. We've also discovered a British (Irish) police series called BLUE LIGHTS that is really good. This is on Britbox and is in the gritty rather than cozy vein. The 3rd season just aired so we're looking forward to having several seasons to follow.

Oh, and we are now recording the late-night shows on our Tablo, so that we can keep up with the voices of sanity, AKA the late-night TV hosts. Who would have thought it?

Take it away, dear REDs. What are you watching?

HALLIE EPHRON: Like you, I’m watching The Great British Baking Show (Season 16) … so many great contestants to root for. This batch seem especially talented.

My daughter was visiting and she’s never watched “Sherlock” which we could stream on Britbox. I do love Britbox. The plots are SO COMPLICATED I have no trouble being challenged to follow the storylines even though I’ve seen them all. And Benedict Cumberbatch is so deliciously and gleefully sociopathic as Holmes. And Martin Freeman the perfect foil as the very human Watson.

And I confess, sometime during the pandemic lockdowns I got hooked on Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. They’ve become a weeknight ritual.

DEBS: Hallie, I LOVED Sherlock, and would happily watch it again. Also, my parents were religious watchers of WHEEL OF FORTUNE and that brings back fond memories for me.

LUCY BURDETTE: We’ve been on a busy vacation so I’ve not been watching TV except for the occasional Jimmy Kimmel or Steve Colbert clip. However, I am very much looking forward to seeing Jane Goodall’s FAMOUS LAST WORDS, and Jeremy White playing Bruce Springsteen later this month. Debs, John loved BLUE LIGHTS but I only watched one or two episodes–too dark for my soul before bedtime!

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: Oh, I have been on book tour, so hotel TV is all about Chopped, which is always on.

But in real life, back home, so many good things–Slow Horses is back, hurray. Cannot wait for The Lincoln Lawyer to return.

Also, I just spent the day with Elizabeth George, she is incredible, so I came home from Atlanta and instantly started bingeing the new Lynley, and then will return to the old Lynley. SO fun, now that I know all the backstory.

I am a massive fan of The Morning Show, and crossing fingers  the new season is good. Oh, and Invasion.

I LOVED State of Play, Debs. And isn’t The Diplomat coming back?

OH, and finally–THE OFFER! (Debs, did you tell me about this?) About the making of The Godfather, and it is fantastic.)

DEBS: Yes, it was me who recommended THE OFFER. I don't know why this series didn't get more press. I think it's worth a temporary subscription to Paramount just to watch it!!!! So glad you liked it, Hank. We watched THE GODFATHER when we finished it, and that was fascinating, too.

And, yes, we are looking forward to THE DIPLOMAT, too.

RHYS BOWEN:  A big fan of the Great British Baking Show here too. They are always such nice, kind people who cheer for each other. How could you not love it! We also watched the Thursday Murder Club.. which deviated quite a lot from the book.

Apart from that we watch a lot of Britbox, all our favorite mystery series, plus I like all the travel shows on Britibox. Martin Clunes and various British islands, others on favorite villages, canal trips etc. I guess I’m nostalgic for a simpler era at the moment.

Finally finished up Clarkson’s Farm which got rather annoying in the end.

How about it, dear readers? What other gems have we missed, and are we all "baking" together? (I keep promising to buy some kind of a treat for Friday nights, because we always feel so deprived when the episode is over!)

Just watched a tour of Windsor castle with Eugene levy and the Prince of Wales on Apple TV.

Currently watching (again) GILMORE GIRLS on Netflix. I love this series.

Trying to recall which K drama Jenn recommended today? Yesterday? On social media.

  4. The new Lynley hasn't grabbed me yet. Maybe I'm still under the spell of the original, whose Barbara Havers was so vulnerable.

The day I went to the ER for what we thought was a heart attack stopped us from keeping our dinner reservations at Jeremy Clarkson's pub, The Farmer's Dog. Drat it.

    1. Karen, I agree the new Lynley doesn't grab. We have decided (after episode 3) that he is just a really terrible actor, and that 'someone' wants to just make him look sexy with his shirt gapping open. Agreed it does have cufflinks, and looks well cut, he doesn't look posh. As for Havers - she doesn't seem unkempt and shop-weary enough. I think we will try an episode of the old series to make sure it was as good as we remember.

      Delete
    2. I'm going to have to chime in here as a dissenting voice. I loved the new Lynley! But then, I was never too taken with the earlier version. I mean, both leads in the old one were excellent, already well-known actors, but I didn't think they were right for the parts. If I'm honest, neither the old nor the new Havers really captures the character as I understood her in the books, but overall I'm much happier with the new series.

      Delete
    3. I thought the new Lynley (the actor) was better in the later episodes - a little blank in the first one. And Havers is certainly not the Havers of the books.

      Delete
    4. I could never watch the old Lynley because I felt like he was SO miscast. I did like Havers. I'll give the new series a try.

Karen, did they decide that what happened to you was NOT a heart attack? And how are you doing?

      Delete
    5. Yes, Debs, it was actually myocarditis, not a heart attack. Sure scared me witless, though. It took me a few days to shake off the infection, but I am pretty much back to normal. Going home tomorrow.

I think I was only able to watch the first three of the new Lynleys. I am willing to be won over. The books are so good, and bringing them into the cell phone era is okay with me.

      Delete
    6. Oh, so agree. I thought the old Lynley did not look like MY Lynley at all :-) and it was really hard to accept him. He’s such a difficult character, anyway, his whole persona is being prickly and aloof. Which is why we have Havers. I think the new one looks exactly like “ The real” Lynley.
Havers though, they had to make her pretty, didn’t they :-) And they had to put sexual attention, which, no, there wasn’t any. It makes it a completely different story, But I love Elizabeth George so much I don’t care.

      Delete
    7. Plus, the new Lynley looks so much like Richard Chamberlain to me… Remember?

      Delete
    8. Oh, yes, my very first TV heart throb!! Now I have to look up the new Lynley!

  5. Yes, the Diplomat is coming back, so I look forward to that. I have watched the Great British Baking Show with my son but I should see if I can watch it at home. Heads of State (Prime) is fun because of Idris Elba and John Cena.

We watched Season 3 of Foundation (Apple) - hubs is now less bothered by how different it is from the book.

Looking forward to Down Cemetery Road by Mick Herron on Apple Oct 29.

  9. I have four main TV shows that I'm either re-watching or watching for the first time that I'm working on.

Rewatching: Babylon 5 and Elementary. I love both shows and can never get enough of either of them.

Watching for the first time: Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. were ones I started just for giggles but given that I'm on Season 12 of both shows, I'd say it is safe to say I'm hooked. And with the new seasons underway, as soon as I catch up on what came before I can start the new seasons.

I'm watching NCIS: Tony & Ziva, the NCIS spinoff streaming on Paramount+. It's been okay but the last couple of episodes have been kind of boring. Still, anything that brings back Tony and Ziva has to be good.

Speaking of new seasons, since the fall season is officially underway, I am back to watching some of the shows that have already returned. High Potential has put out four new episodes so far. I've seen the first two but plan to watch the other ones this week I hope.

I'm watching Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU as well. I watch the comedy Shifting Gears. It's a Tim Allen show and while his right-wing crap is annoying, for some reason I always seem to like his TV shows. It annoying but I do enjoy the sarcastic deliveries of the rest of the cast.

As for other shows soon to return my list is: FBI, CIA, NCIS, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney, Ghosts, Matlock, Elsbeth (those two actually returned last night so I have to watch those premiere episodes), The Hunting Party, Happy's Place, Boston Blue and Watson.

I haven't seen many movies lately but I think I might check out the mostly live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon which is now on Peacock.

And there's plenty of other stuff for me to check out on Peacock, Netflix, Paramount+, Disney+, Prime, Fawesome, Tubi, Plex and Pluto TV to name a few of the streamers I currently have access to.

    1. Jay you might consider adding the *new* Hawaii 5-0 series to your list. It is very well produced, filmed on Oahu (which is a treat if you live in a wintery place like I do!), the stories are solid and the humor is a lot of fun! I am not usually a network television watcher but got hooked on this while taking care of my parents a couple of years ago. A totally fun and engaging show!

  13. Our favorite "tense shows" of the past months were Hinterland and Department Q. We loved both of them. The end of Department Q was absolutely remarkable, and so moving. Derry Girls I only learned about fairly recently, and I very much enjoyed that. Might I mention the addictive "Escape to the Country"? There was a time, about a year ago, when we considered moving to Yorkshire after watching one of the episodes. We are currently watching Professor T.

    ReplyDelete

    1. My husband gave up on Hinterland because of the many dramatic looks. When I read that they filmed the series in both Welsh and English, it made sense why many scenes were just meaningful looks that worked in both languages.

  15. We do not have Netflix or Apple. We took Apple when it was on sale for 3.99 and pigged out on it, knowing that we would let it go after a while. We may have to get Netflix for a while after Christmas, at least to watch Thursday Murder Club.
As for us – we have Britbox, Acorn, CBC Gem, and Prime, which seems to be the largest source. CBC had ‘Gold’ series 1 (gold robbery in Britain) which we watched last year, but will rewatch to refresh forgetful brains, now that season 2 is here. The entire series is now available on PBS. Watching Maigret on that – seems ok so far, and have taped Brian and Maggie. Finishing last episode of Unforgotten tonight – always good.
Enjoying Code of Silence – possibly it was on PBS, but we are watching on Britbox. 25 year old deaf girl, semi unemployed teams up with police to read lips. Unfortunately, she has fallen for the criminal as well. OK. Sometimes it defies belief in what we can interpret that she can read. Murder Before Evensong – Acorn, what can you say, it includes Amanda Redman as the mother – cantankerous! We just watched John Candy – I Like Me (Prime). Worth the viewing.
We watch a lot of documentary-type, and are now going through the seasons of Home of the Year Ireland – 3 houses are discussed by 3 experts (with their own biases) over 20 mins. They choose one in the group to be pooled at the end of the 7-week series, and then the top one is decided. Houses are interesting/awful/expensive – whatever. It starts in 2015, and we are now in season 7 (2021 – covid). It is interesting to see how ‘au courant’ changes from all white to now coloured paint schemes, and this year – covid. They are obviously standing so far apart! Like GBBO, we talk about the items on offer, place our number out of 10, and try and guess what the critics will vote. A huge wail often goes up when the house is only worth a 6, and someone gives it a 9!
Now that we are back indoors for lunch – we have Would I Lie to You and QI to entertain us, followed by a taped Jeopardy during dessert (jello). Relaxation at its best!
Leftover turkey (hot sandwiches) for lunch, and leftover ham for supper. Enjoying the quiet! The dog and the cats are calming down!

We've also watched the first episode of Murder Before Evensong on Acorn, and I'd say our jury is still out. We often feel that it takes more than one episode to really get a feel for a show.

I got Covid on Sept 4 and found watching anything on a screen just TOO MUCH. Instead, when I got back enough energy to focus, I only wanted to read. Much more, I don't know, soothing? Required less emotional energy? Whatever it was, I'm well along the road to recovery at this point, but I'm still not in a TV watching mood.

There's one thing that might push me back into streaming in the evening, and that's how HARD it is to hold a book while dealing with the petting demands of one dog and one cat. Rocky and Walker are apparently not literary aficionados.

  24. We are rotating.

Currently in the middle of season five of Only Murders in the Building. But The Hubby does not like watching one at a time, so we let 3-4 of them build up then watch 2 at a time.

Went back to watch all the David Suchet episodes of Poirot, but we got through all the 1-hour ones and now only have the movies left, so those are a Friday/Saturday thing.

Waiting for more Lincoln Lawyer and Department Q.

I watch the third season of Leverage: Redemption when The Hubby is elsewhere as he is not interested.

The Hubby insisted on starting a series called "The Chosen" on Amazon, which is the story of the gospels, but from the apostles' POV. It's very good, but there are five seasons - I'm feeling the need for a night of murder. LOL

It’s on HBO/Max.) We started Wednesday, finishing season one a couple of nights ago. We just caught up on Professor T (beautiful ending to the most recent season) last night. Ever since I saw Craig Johnson at Bouchercon last month, I have been re-watching Longmire - my husband’s first time watching it. I’m not sure he’s as smitten with it as I am, but it’s still early days. We are supposed to be getting free Apple TV with our T-Mobile account so I need to figure that out so we can watch the latest Slow Horses. We’re still in season two of Grantchester, but catching up! 28. I'm sorry I can't contribute more to this, since I don't get a lot of these shows, but I'm enjoying reading about what everyone else is watching. We will get hold of the new season of Lincoln Lawyer by hook or by crook--we are big fans. I imagine we can stream State of Play--it sounds excellent.

    1. State of Play is from 2003 and we couldn't find it streaming here. Fortunately we had a copy saved in our media storage but it's available on DVD and Blu-ray. I'm curious about what you can get in Switzerland, Kim. Obviously, State of Play was a much bigger deal in the UK than it was in the US so might be more available in UK/EU markets.

  29. I'm finally watching Foyle's War, and what's funny is that it's due to my husband starting it. In fact, I'm watching the last episode now. I can see why everyone raved about it. Sometimes it takes me way too long to get to these oldies but goodies. I want to catch up with The Great British Baking Show, as I haven't started the new season. I also need to catch up with Only Murders in the Building and The Thursday Murder Club. I'm looking forward to more Dept. Q, too. I need to see when that comes out.
