DEBORAH CROMBIE: Somehow Super Bowl Sunday has rolled around again! How did this happen? And, um, who exactly is playing?
Sorry, Pats and Hawks out there, just kidding. I don't watch much football, but when I do, I call myself a Kansas City Chiefs fan. (Sorry, you Cowboys lovers. I am a contrary Dallasite.) But I am, as always, in the Super Bowl for the ads, the half time show, and the snacks.
This year it's not just because Bad Bunny is on the bill (although Benito can sing to me anytime) but because I am a big fan of Green Day, who are opening the show. Maybe Kincaid/James readers will remember that in THE SOUND OF BROKEN GLASS, when Andy is supposed to be auditioning for a record producer, it's Green Day's Good Riddance that he plays. I love Billy Joe Armstrong and I'm sure he'll be his usual, um, irreverent self.
As for snacks, I'm having a hard time coming up with something for just two people (and that's assuming I can make my husband sit down and watch the game with me.) But I am tempted by this recipe for nostalgia's sake, Million Dollar Dip, made famous by Dallas's own Neiman Marcus. And maybe we'll treat ourselves to a once-a-year Bloody Mary!
We won't be snuggling up in front of the fire, however–we are in the 70s here in north Texas and will be for the rest of this week. Sending hugs to those of you digging out from more snow, and hoping you are not yet tired of chili.
Not to rub it in, but I was thrilled to get out to the farmers market yesterday, the first time since before Christmas. Apparently everyone else in my town felt the same way because the market was heaving and things were selling out by nine o'clock!
It always cheers me up to see people and dogs, and I was desperate for my favorite salad greens. Not to mention the best latte around!
It will get cold again, never fear, but meanwhile there are the Winter Olympics to watch, so we can imagine snow and ice even if we don't have it.
How about it, lovely REDDIES, what's in your Sunday line-up? Superbowl? Dip? Cheering for Ilia Malinin in the Men's Free Skate?
P.S. One last thing--a grammar question! Should "farmers market" have an apostrophe? (Plural.) My city chooses not to use one.

Definitely spending our Sunday cheering for Ilia Malinin . . . .
ReplyDeleteI'd always assumed that the "farmers" in Farmers Market was plural [rather than possessive] for the many farmers bringing their fruits and vegetables and such, so I'd agree with your city and say no apostrophe . . . .
I respectfully dissent about the apostrophe. It feels so weird to not use it. I can picture Sister Cecilia rapping my knuckles with her infernal ruler over it.
DeleteI would add the apostrophe at the end, for example farmers' market.
DeleteThere are multiple farmers who go to the market so it would be plural.
Karen, you and I clearly grew up in different times. Even though I did go to catholic school for three years, if any teacher had tried hitting me with a ruler, it would've been a bad day at the blackboard for that ruler.
DeleteI am with Joan. It is a market in which farmers can be found. It does not belong to them any more than you'd say "fruit stand" should be "fruits' stand."
DeleteInteresting perspective, Judy!
DeleteBeing die hard Bills Mafia here, we really don’t care who wins today as long as it isn’t the Patriots!
ReplyDeleteBut hey, that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy Super Bowl snacks and commercials. This is still America, right?
We shall have our choice of freshly made guacamole with Tostitos, Buffalo wings, mushroom pizza with pepperoni on half, popcorn, beer, soda, and local hard cider.
GO SEAHAWKS!!!
And shrimp with red sauce
DeleteAmen, Ann! I hate that Sam Darnold could win a ring before Josh, but not the Patriots! (Also a Steelers fan, so doubly-against a Pats win because that would put the Pats ahead with 7 SB wins.)
DeleteI'm coming to your house, Ann!
DeleteAnn's just jealous because the Bills are better known for having one of the world's most notorious murderers as an alum, losing FOUR straight Super Bowls and currently fielding a team that never gets the job done either. And yes, this would be trash talk from a Patriots fans.
DeleteLiz, I'm hoping Sam Darnold remembers he's Sam Darnold and has a terrible game so my Patriots win.
I haven’t really made plans for the big game. Assume we will have it on and find something to eat. Maybe I will finish my current read between commercials.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Olympics, I am interested in the speed skating as there are skaters from here in Ocala, one of whom was a flag bearer for the Opening Ceremonies.

I just read this morning that Lindsay Vonn crashed. Prayers for her.
I was hoping Lindsay would be okay. Hugs to her.
DeleteHeartbreaker
DeleteI saw the news about Lindsey Vonn and it appears to have been pretty bad. She crashed 13 seconds into her run. The crash was referred to as being "horrific". She could be heard screaming in pain and had to be helicoptered out.
DeleteI'll be watching it more for the commercials and the half-time show. I already saw my Clydesdale 2026 Superbowl commercial...if you haven't seen it...wait for it. It put a smile on my face and a tear was shed.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it yet but the Clydesdales are always my favorites.
DeleteThe Clydesdales always, always make me cry.
DeleteThe commercials are the kick, right? I haven't watched a superbowl in years, but Irwin will tune in and out. I think we'll have dinner as usual. That's less work than snacks.
ReplyDeleteToday the wind chill will be close to minus 20°F all day. That is -20°F.
When I ring your doorbell, Miss "it's 70° here," don't be surprised;>)
I know! ..."It's 70 degrees here". Humph. While here in So Cal we are freezing, it must be around high 50's. :) :) In all seriousness, we watch the news and think about much of the nation and the horrible weather. Stay safe.
DeleteI am in the Bay Area temps in the seventies and low eighties since mid January. This is ten miles inland from the coast.
DeleteJudy, you'd be more than welcome!!
DeleteJust so sad right now about Lindsey Vonn. Will be watching the Olympics all day (and on and on until they're over!) and then will probably fall asleep watching the Super Bowl (I'm not a big football fan unless I know one of the players. I used to love watching my son play, and before that my brother. Both just local games but the most fun).
ReplyDeleteWe are having throughout the afternoon/evening: queso and chips (I make the queso), chicken wings, brisket sandwiches and will top it all off with Dulce de Lech caramel ice cream sundaes.
Yum! I used to go to a lot of trouble to make chicken wings but my husband doesn't like them, so not bothering. Last year or the year before I made buffalo cauliflower. The idea was good, the execution not so hot.
DeleteFor quite a few years now we have gone to the same friends' home for a Super Bowl party and I am thankful for that. They always make it a fun event, with a 2-sided bingo card for everyone (one for things to catch in the game, the other for things to find in the commercials) and plenty of small prizes. There are other games as well, and everyone brings a food item to share in addition to the hosts' taco bar. So even in a year like this when I have no emotional connection to either team, I can count on a good time.
ReplyDeleteI like the bingo card idea - that's clever.
DeleteI am definitely cheering for the SeaHawks!
Cheering for the Seahawks here. And I'm just thinking I may run down to the local butcher shop and buy some of the house made white queso I saw yesterday. Dip solved. If they haven't sold out!
DeleteBAH! Go Patriots...:D
DeleteNow I'm going to be in your bad books forever, Jay!
DeleteNo plans yet for Super Bowl viewing. The only dip I will be doing is double dipping church services (English and Spanish), but I should get home in time to watch. This Rams fan is supporting the SEAHAWKS. Rooting for the Patriots is like rooting for GM (as we used to say about the NY Yankees fans). The farmers market looks lovely!
ReplyDeleteIf I was doing any kind of double dipping for church services, it would be putting Metal Church on the stereo and worshipping at the one true Sunday Service...NFL FOOTBALL! GO PATRIOTS...from a sarcastically trash-talking fan. :D
DeleteI am not interested in the Super Bowl, although I do want to see Green Day, Bad Bunny, and Brandi Carlisle. It’s rather be watching “All Creatures Great and Small” which I will if it’s not halftime. This house will root for the Patriots because we’re New England, although I find Robert Kraft to be deplorable. I know the Olympics will be on -the ice dancing and figure skating are my favourite. I’m SO sad for Lindsey Vonn! I’m making vermicelli chicken for dinner but otherwise no special Super Bowl food. I hope everyone stays warm (or cool if you are not in the frigid winter areas) and has a great Sunday!
ReplyDeleteAll Creatures Great & Small is worth the watch, it is such a touching and inspiring show.
DeleteOh, I forgot about Brandi! I love Brandi Carlisle. And I hadn't heard about Lindsey Vonn. So sad!!!
DeleteWait, why is Robert Kraft deplorable? I mean, there are options, I just wonder which one you're picking.
DeleteOh Jay he started going downhill in my estimation after Myra died. And I don’t care for his politics to be polite.
DeleteOh, no, Lindsey Vonn! Remember the tag line of the Wide World of Sports: "the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat"? After her crash the other day, I have been worried that this could happen.
ReplyDeleteOur friend Rocco is disgusted with the Super Bowl (because the Bengals, ugh), so he and Mary are this year hosting a Stupor Bowl party for our core friend group, just a dozen guests. Not sure whether we will be allowed to watch the halftime acts of not. I hope so. Mary was a DJ in Cincinnati for 50 years, and she is the best person to see/hear music with. I've been tasked with bringing a dessert, so I'm whipping up a batch of brownies, and taking ice cream to go with. Their daughter is making a local favorite called Skyline dip, made with the weird local chili, shredded cheddar, sour cream, and corn chips.
Beth Glixon
DeleteWell, that didn't work! Beth, here. I was just reminiscing about Wide World of Sports yesterday. My husband was a big fan, and that's where I was introduced to Curling. Have fun at your party! I think my husband will mix Super Bowl and Olympics. I hope to make a push on the paper I need to finish. Still iced in here in Lexington, more or less, at least in terms of my car, and our trash bin is frozen in with 6 or more inches of ice. Ugh. Looking forward to the thaw in the next few days.
DeleteThat sounds fun, Karen. And, ugh, Beth. So glad you're going to thaw.
DeleteOh, wow, Beth, you guys really got it bad, with the ice. It's supposed to warm up after today, just 60 miles from you, hope you also get thawed out.
DeleteThanks, Debs.
P.S. My sister-in-law used to stop her car and stomp over to poorly punctuated signs and FIX them with a Magic Marker. That was 30-40 years ago, and her kids were mortified. I think today she would get into big trouble!
DeleteKaren - I love this story! Your SIL sounds awesome.
DeleteShe is, Lisa! I adore her.
DeleteI don't know if we'll watch the game - at least not the whole game - but I've been tasked with making chicken wings for the local VFW and their Super Bowl party. A: I'm the native Buffalonian B: I'm not afraid of the commercial fryer and C: Nobody else involved likes handling raw chicken.
ReplyDeleteGo Seahawks!
Yes, I'm rooting for the Seahawks, too.
DeleteYou are both off my fictional Xmas Card list, just saying. :D
DeleteOlympics, please. Not thrilled by either team in the Super Bowl, but can't root for Pats. Ick. As for food, whatever sounds good and is in the house.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the farmers market question. I know it irks the punctuation-minded among us, but I am reminded that many who frequent the markets won't even give it a thought. They're stuck on the market part, parking, and any socialization that may occur. Punctuation isn't on their radar. -- Victoria
You are so right, Victoria. Hand up for punctuation nerd here!
DeleteIck? Really, ick? They spend five straight years being awful and in the space of a season, the new coach builds a young team that handles their business and wins their way to the biggest game of the season?
DeleteGo Patriots!
As for the apostrophe, I would either make it singular or plural but it definitely needs an apostrophe.
ReplyDeleteSuper bowl question. We don't watch football because of the concussion industry. And will be driving home from Western Massachusetts after a weekend of doing more renovations on my son's bathroom. So the first task will be clearing 8 in of new snow from the driveway! Otherwise, it's been fun to catch some olympics here with the kids and maybe we'll do it at home too.
I saw that cute picture of Ida Rose checking out Hugh's work. The littlest supervisor!
DeleteWe had a discussion at genealogy club about "Veterans Day," which I thought should have an apostrophe. But...it's a day honoring all veterans, not a day belonging to any one of them. Same thing about the Farmers Market, I suppose. Annette
DeleteI agree with Annette!
DeleteI'd definitely write Farmers' Market, even if it's old-fashioned. Here in Bern, the Superbowl doesn't come on until after midnight, and after almost 40 years here, I'd rather watch what Europeans call football, which is soccer. What we are delighting in watching is the Winter Olympics, where the Swiss have a team of 91 men and 84 women competing in 14 sports. Our first gold medal was in Alpine downhill skiing; the winner is 24-year-old Franjo von Allmen at his first Olympics. And he's from my canton, Bern! Yay, Franjo. (I'm, too, am sad for Lindsay Vonn, and also for our top woman skiing star, Lara Gut-Behrami, who can't compete because of a torn knee ligament.)
ReplyDeleteYay for Switzerland! I will cheer for them!
DeleteThank you, Debs!
DeleteThe Swiss skiers are amazing!
DeleteHi Debs, great question.
ReplyDeleteI think it should be Farmer's Market if it is one farmer.
And if many farmers it should be Farmers' Market.
It should be Farmers' Market, I would think. Our Thanksgiving Day meals in recent decades were always accompanied by the Dallas game. Just because of my cousin's family. And it's my other side of the family that grew up in Dallas, though they did attend Law School in Texas! It's been 2 weeks of ice in our town now. I'm looking forward to warmer temps, but I think it will be some time before the ice disappears.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Chicago Manual of Style, you are correct, Beth, but other sources say it can be with or without.
DeleteOur Thanksgiving meals at my aunt's are always accompanied by the Cowboys game and lots of shouting. It's de rigueuer here.
I'll definitely be watching the game, rooting for the Pats, and having nary a clue what's going on. Watching football always feels like going down a worm hole -- the last "10 minutes" usually go on forever. But in a good game that's often the most exciting part. I'm taping the Olympics so I can speed watch the boring parts. And overall skipping the snacks.
ReplyDeleteGetting a kick out of today's apostrophe discussion. Only here! Next thing we'll take on the Oxford comma and the joy of double negatives...
I will fight anyone who wants to do away with the Oxford comma!! We should do a blog!
DeleteHallie YES! AND don't get me started on the 2 minute warning!! The "warning" is that the game will now go on for another 20 min if we're lucky.
DeleteHallie, I was just thinking the same thing — only here! People who write and people who read a lot are the ones who care and pay attention to things like punctuation: ergo, this group!
ReplyDeleteWe’re going to do our annual tradition of picking up the carnitas special from a local restaurant. It’s a whole meal (beans, rice, guacamole and chips besides the carnitas and tortillas) so all we have to do is eat! I’m so over the Patriots and even though the Seahawks beat my 49ers, I will be rooting for them. I hope to watch some of the Olympics before and after the game. I’m hoping Lindsey is okay. — Pat S
Pat S., just curious. How can you be over the Patriots at this point? They've been terrible the five past seasons, not winning each of the past 5 years?
DeleteJay, there’s no logic to emotions. I don’t like any team winning repeatedly — unless it’s MY team (the 49ers)! — Pat S
DeleteAhahaha I didn’t clock this was Super Bowl Sunday until I went to the San Francisco farmers’ market yesterday to get MY lettuce fix and wondered why it was packed with special vendors selling well-known organic crops like canned margaritas. (And as you can see, I’ve wrestled long and hard with how to write farmers’ market, and although I end up in the plural possessive camp, forgive me for sometimes leaving off the apostrophe when it feels too grammar police-y!)
ReplyDeleteChortling, Jonelle, over your well-known organic crops! I have agonized long over the farmers(') market apostrophe so double checked the city's spelling yesterday!
DeleteThe Patriots are in the Super Bowl, and despite them being underdogs and most of the sports journalists (or those that masquerade as such) picking the Seahawks to win, I'll be tuning in. GO PATS!
ReplyDeleteI always thought the reason it said FARMERS MARKET was because there were a number of "farmers" there. FARMER'S MARKET would lend itself more to it being one farmer's market? Or is my grasp of grammar slipping in my advancing age? Which is almost certainly the case.
As for those who say they tune in to the Super Bowl for the commercials...WHY? The damn things are put online up to a week beforehand these days. You can see them all well before the game even starts.
As for the halftime show, unlike the morons pissed about Bad Bunny and doing their BS "alternative and aggressively racist" half-time show, I have zero use for the halftime show because I want first half analysis by the talking heads and look ahead to what needs to happen for both teams in the second half. It's the biggest football game of the year, stop screwing it up with frippery like music and stuff. It's a distraction from the actual main event of the day. You could hire Iron Maiden to play the half-time show and I still wouldn't care to tune in to it. Hell, I'll watch the Puppy Bowl before I watch ANY Super Bowl halftime show.
I doubt I'll be making any food for the game other than my dinner. Yes, I'll be home. I had thought of going out but the 99 is only open until 9:30pm on Sundays and I checked, they aren't extending their hours for the game. Who wants to have to go home after 3 quarters? And the other place I was thinking of going (where I watched the last two Patriots victories) doesn't seem to be putting on their usual Super Bowl watch party. By the way, they have a great half-time show when they do put it on. A free buffet at half-time where the fried chicken is so massive you almost feel bad for having two pieces. Almost.
And for those of you not interested in the game, there is a new episode of Miss Scarlet on PBS tonight. :D
Thanks for reminding me I am so behind on Miss Scarlet, Jay:-)
DeleteFor a very short time when the Seahawks were just getting started and training down the street and my upstairs neighbor was executive secretary to Chuck Knox (the coach ?), I followed football (one season or maybe two) for the only time in my life : high school in too small a town to afford a football team, attended all women’s college. So today has been and is just another Sunday. Elisabeth
ReplyDeleteMy grandma, from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, was a die-hard Seahawks fan from their first season. She used to talk about Jim (Zorn) and Steve (Largent) like they were personal friends. So, my family always cheers for the Hawks!
DeleteWhat a lovely story, Robin. My son-in-law is a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan for the same reason. He decided they were his team when he was kid and has never wavered. They've even gone to some of the Packers' home games, although they nearly froze to death.
DeleteThere's something so endearing about Packer players jumping into the stands after a TD!
DeleteCheering for the ice skaters at the Winter Olympics.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the Super Bowl, I am here for the Halftime Show with Bad Bunny. There will be a Sign Language interpreter on Center Stage with Bad Bunny. Will the cameras show the Sign Language interpreter OR cut out that part on the screen like they have done in the past? I have heard of the sign language interpreters at halftime shows in the past, yet we Never See the interpreter on TV!
Gee, Diana, that’s terribly inconsiderate! I hope they get it right this year.
DeleteDebRo
I'll be watching for that, Diana. I hope they get it right!!
DeleteEveryone, thank you. Please let us know if you catch a glimpse of the sign language interpreter with Bad Bunny at half time.
DeleteJay, I agree it is more than one farmer so it should be farmers but the apostrophe should go at the end - farmers' market.
ReplyDeleteOkay, thanks for clarifying it for me. I knew I was wrong but again, grasping at the grammar rules was tripping me up.
DeleteNope. Just a market full of farmers, not a possession of the farmers therein.
DeleteI don't particularly like the half time shows.
ReplyDeleteBut, I'm glad Bad Bunny will be playing which will keep certain politicians (well one in particular) away and I'm sure the teams and fans are happy about that.
I love watching THE Ohio State halftime shows with their marching band and they are the best even if the team loses.
I love the marching bands!
DeleteFootball doesn’t exist for me.
ReplyDeleteI’ll be watching the Olympics!
DebRo
Not watching either, Deb. Just because of the kind of day I’m having, my free time doesn’t align with the Olympics. Sending some FL warmth back to CT. Elisabeth
DeleteAlas, won't be watching this year, or next. Nothing political - California Super Bowls start too late for me since I'm a fan of the ads, not the game. Move 'em east, I'm ready.
ReplyDeleteAs for the eats - which are the best part of any game, homemade jalepeno poppers and nachos are perfect.
Kait, the Super Bowl starts at the same time, no matter where it’s played. It always starts at 6:30 EST, (3:30 PST). Last year’s was held in New Orleans and it also started at 6:30 EST, even though NOLA is in the Central time zone.
DeleteOf course we’re watching the Super Bowl! Go Pats! And I have to make beef stew for the game, more about that later. I hope even mentioning it is not a jinx.
ReplyDeleteAnd popcorn.
And I wish we could have Bloody Marys. I really love them, Debs, but there’s just never a good time to drink them, you know? If I have alcohol during the day, that’s it. Done.
As for the apostrophe, it’s all I’m thinking about now. Gaah. I think there’s a good argument for either way. Is it plural? Or is it possessive?
Not possessive, Hank. Just a place where you'll find farmers.
DeleteGood point Judy.
DeleteFarmers market AP style; treats "farmers" as a descriptor.
Farmers' market Common usage; indicates possession by multiple farmers.
Oh, that was me Hank, above.
ReplyDeleteI knew it was you, Hank:-) You can make "virgin" Mary's. If I make them they will likely be half strength otherwise I'll snooze right through the halftime show...
DeletePuppy Bowl, Olympics, Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, we just finished the Westminster Dog show and it's Valentine's weekend next week. We're attending a UCinti CCM production of "Rope", a 1929 play and 1948 Hitchcock film, based on a true crime.
ReplyDeleteHave fun, Margaret!
DeleteThis afternoon I'm attending a Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra concert. When I get home I'm walking Button, my dog. If I can figure out what time the 1/2 time starts I'll watch it. I've never heard Bad Bunny so that would be good to see. I'm not a football fan.
ReplyDeleteHere is a Bad Bunny primer for those not in the know: https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/2026/02/07/bad-bunny-top-songs-super-bowl/?carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F46b3ef8%2F6988c85863c1b115695fedc3%2F5986e4509bbc0f6826f115a8%2F30%2F63%2F6988c85863c1b115695fedc3
ReplyDeleteI'm a Pats fan (obvy) but since the Seahawks are owned by a woman, I'm leaning that way this year. It's just Hub and me so we're grilling steaks (because it's 82 here) and looking forward to the half-time show! Woo hoo!
ReplyDeleteAs for the market sign, to me it should be the plural possessive Farmers’ Market.
ReplyDeleteI never have figured out why it is St. Marys Hospital and not St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
English. Go figure.
DeleteYes it is something along the lines of it is named for St Marys Hospital and not owned by St. Mary. Like Judy’s explanation for the market full of farmers above.
DeleteI love that Green Day song! I might watch the start of Super Bowl just for hopes of that! As for the game, really, I don't give a hoot for the teams. I only know of Bad Bunny because of the controversy of his being the halftime show. I haven't heard his music but maybe I'll correct my ignorance. I do love football, but I have to have a dog in that fight and I don't this year. Farmers Market, Farmers' Market, who cares. Bring on those farmers!
ReplyDeletePat, see above re Bad Bunny. I love his music. I dare anyone not to want to dance! I should have included a video link in the post.
DeleteI will be wearing my Bears jersey and hoping the Patriots do as well as they did 40 years ago. And screaming along with Green Day!
ReplyDeleteAnd husband is making Velveeta/Rotel/sausage dip.
DeleteAny thoughts on the commercials so far? Hubby just asked me is there one commercial you l Iike? Nope. Im especially not liking the over abundance of betting ads.
ReplyDelete
