HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: In the dearth of summer TV, Jonathan and I were looking for something engaging entertaining and relatable and fun, possibly a little bit life-changing. I saw that Lucy and her husband were watching West Wing, and that seemed like a good idea. So we started at the very beginning, season one episode one and Reds and readers, we are hooked.
We watched it before, when it was on the air the first time in the early 2000s, and I remember loving it, and thinking it was wonderful and groundbreaking and intelligent and powerful, but I have to say, watching it again, it is all of those things and even more.
The writing is astonishing! It is still timely, how can that be? Sometimes hilariously so, one episode recently talked about wacky people coming to the White House, and one of them wanted to convince the president that we should use the map of the world that’s actually accurate. That shows geography in the real size, which makes the United States very small and Africa very big. The way it really looks. (Thank you to Equal Earth and Correct the Map)
The Mercator type maps, the one we are so used to, also puts the Arctic circle at the top of the globe. Who’s to say that’s right side up?
Anyway, it was incredibly thought-provoking, and what do you know, just recently, a week or so ago, that was one of their proposals before the UN. (Only the United States voted against it.)
There are episodes about patriotism, and extremism. About racism and healthcare and women’s rights and inside politics. About Air Force One, and ballrooms, and dealing with the press.Truly. And I just love the character Donna.
It’s amazing. Reds and readers, do you watch West Wing, have you, would you, do you?
The last episode we watched made us both cry. When was the last time TV did that? Putting it this way –when was the last time the television rerun made you cry? Have you gone back and watched anything on TV that’s different-better-worse the second time around?
LUCY BURDETTE: So glad you are enjoying it the second time around Hank! We feel a little ridiculous watching something so old, but it’s very good writing and television! We are also re-watching Nashville in honor of the death of Hayden Panatiere. It’s so sad how her life mirrored the show. But this is another excellent series. Unfortunately, it just left Netflix, but you can purchase it through Amazon prime or Apple TV. Since we are hopelessly hooked, we are doing that now!
HALLIE EPHRON: I watched West Wing regularly waaaaay back when. Seems like the one (oops two things) thing I remember is Allison Janney. And Martin Sheen. At the time I thought it was a bit preachy… but then so was Star Trek which I can rewatch endlessly, and a little preachiness is refreshing right now.
I’m going to queue it up on my tv. Between new episodes of Great British Baking Show which restarts in a few days. Weirdly that’s another show with old episodes I can rewatch and be just as surprised at the outcomes as I was the first time around.
JENN McKINLAY: The most recent show that Hub and I rewatched was The Office. If you’ve ever worked with a small group of people, it absolutely holds up. I’m afraid to rewatch West Wing because I’ll get depressed, you know, because there’s no East Wing anymore, so is it truly a West Wing? *Jenn wanders off muttering under her breath*
HANK says: That's what I worried about, too, Jenn. But it's more inspirational than depressing. Really!
JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: I never watched West Wing the first time around, so if I dig into it, it’ll be a premiere for me. But I have been doing a rewatch of sorts. You may remember I was working my way through the ITV Poirot series, and I naturally segued to the ITV Marple series. I’ve now seen all the Geraldine McEwan/Julia McKenzie episodes (including several that I KNOW weren’t Marple mysteries - what’s up with that?)
I decided I had to give the Joan Hickson version of Miss Marple a try, and am working my way through those episodes with great pleasure. What’s next? You guessed it - the Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple movies. So I’m seeing the same stories, but with different casts and production values.
RHYS BOWEN: I can never understand why they have to keep rehashing Miss Marple. To my mind Joan Hickson was perfect. Exactly as I imaged her. Others were too twittery and lacked her natural breeding and grace
And Hallie, I’ll also be starting the British baking show as soon as I get home.
Right now it’s family dinners and lots of entertaining in Cornwall.
DEBORAH CROMBIE: We loved THE WEST WING, back in the day. The writing and acting were amazing, but I've been afraid to rewatch because I thought it would be depressing. But if you say it's more inspirational, Hank, maybe we will give it a try. It would be good to remember how things were supposed to work.
Meanwhile, we are halfway through season 6 (of 7) of ELEMENTARY, which we did not see first time around. I'd say the first four seasons are terrific. I'm flagging a bit in season 4 and now 5, but kind of hate to give up.
HANK: How about you, reds and readers? Have you watched re-runs of anything recently? Have you been tempted?
Is it different from re-reading a book?
And what do you think of the map of the actual world?

I'm all for an actual map; you'd think everyone would definitely want an accurate one.
ReplyDeleteYes, I definitely watched . . . and truly enjoyed . . . "The West Wing" the first time around; haven't gotten around to watching it again. But "Star Trek" is the show I re-watch . . . and re-watch . . . and re-watch . . . .
Isn't that lovely how we can watch the same things and see you things each time, and re-enjoy things that touch us?
DeleteGranted it is a limited sample, but all the people I have encountered who are not from the US have commented on how big our country is. Even how big the individual states are. Not one has said this country is much smaller than I expected based on the size on the map.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that according to Google the US is third in land size after Russia and Canada.
DeleteWell, the difference isn't as huge as, say, the difference between how Greenland or Russia are portrayed, or the entire continent of Africa. It's fairly subtle. But the contrast between how the US is pictured and those other countries is massive.
DeleteAnd China!
DeleteThe comparison is shocking, truly, I agree!
DeleteI actually never watched The West Wing the first time around, and I could definitely go for a show that's funny and inspiring! It's going in my queue. I recently rewatched Veep, which is similar in topic but very different in tone. It's a comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the ambitious and self-centered vice-president. She's hilarious to me as a rule, and the writing in this show is so sharp. Veep is definitely not for anyone who objects to profanity, but if you have a slightly twisted sense of humor like me, you might love it.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t watched Veep, but wanted to, but now am worried that it won’t be funny given all the (waves hands).
DeleteCannot wait to watch this! SOmehow I kept missing it...
DeleteTHE WEST WING is baked into our family. In 2006 or so, our son, then 19, came home from college for Christmas break in a state of depression. Our charming, chatty boy was utterly silent. Of course I took him to professionals (driving long distances to do so). Everyone told me he was just experiencing "Sophomore Slump." I worried, correctly as it later turned out, that it was something more serious. However the immediate problem was trying to create dinner table conversations with a workaholic, almost silent husband, a silent teen, and an eager, bubbly nine-year-old. I chatted merrily with our daughter every night in hopes she would not notice the twin obelisks at the table.
ReplyDeleteAround this time my husband heard about THE WEST WING. Our son had seen an episode and recommended it back in normal days. I hadn't been a television watcher for many years (no reception in the mountains) but now in desperation I bought the DVDs. I found cheap folding TV tables and moved our dinners into our home's little television nook. For a year we watched an episode every night over dinner. When we finished the entire series we started over.
When our daughter was in 4th grade she ran for student body president of her middle school (4th-9th grade). A teacher told me she gave a great speech in assembly. "You wrote it, I presume?" I hadn't even seen it. "No, but I think she may have had a little help from Aaron Sorkin." For my husband, Bartlet's challenges running the country reminded him of his own at the head of a complicated organization with a fractious board of trustees. For one of his birthdays before he retired, I bought a WEST WING cast photo and sent it to the very kind Martin Sheen, who signed it to my husband with Bartlet's catch phrase, "Happy birthday, —— ! What's next?" (Selden)
Oh, you bring tears to my eyes. That is touching and lovely in every way. YOu are such a thoughtful and wise person!
DeleteWhat a great story, Selden! Now I really want to rewatch it!
DeleteI watched The West Wing from the beginning. I came to the show because I liked Aaron Sorkin's writing. It started with A Few Good Men, then The American President. Then for two seasons I got to watch the Sorkin magic on the ABC series 'Sports Night'. Then came The West Wing.
ReplyDeleteI watched all seven seasons. I own the show on DVD. I'm currently in Season 4 of my rewatch of the series as well.
And if you pay sharp enough attention, you'll note that Sorkin likes to reuse actors and actresses from one production to the next.
Just a few examples: Felicity Huffman was a lead on Sports Night, then did a guest star appearance on The West Wing.
Thom Barry played a security guard at the gate of the White House in The American President and then would make multiple appearances as Congressman Mark Richardson on The West Wing.
Janel Moloney, who played Donna on The West Wing, made a fantastic guest spot on Sports Night.
The three actors who played the studio techs on Sports Night would all make multiple appearances as White House Press Room reporters on The West Wing.
Joshua Malina had a couple of scenes as a co-worker at the GDC in The American President, played Jeremy on Sports Night and then would play Will Bailey on The West Wing.
And Nina Siezmasko played Annette Bening's sister in The American President, a guest spot as a nanny on Sports Night, and Ellie Bartlet on The West Wing.
I had a similar history with Aaron Sorkin. My husband and I were HUGE fans of Sports Night. I lament that it doesn't get much replay -- I would absolutely love to rewatch some of those episodes.
DeleteYes, I was so sad when Sports Night was cancelled, but I guess if that didn’t happen, we wouldn’t have had The West Wing.
DeleteSo cool, Jay - thanks for those connections!
DeleteJay! This is all such cool information! xxx Thank you/ I always wondered why Janel Moloney wasn't more famous...
DeleteOh Jay, I wish I could give you a big hug for bringing up Sports Night. When my son Kevin, deceased, was in middle school, I let him stay up late so that we could watch Sports Night together. We loved that show. Kevin's belongings we brought home three years ago included the cased set of DVDs for Sports Night. I had bought it, but I remember him being home from college once and telling me he just had to take those with him. I think I'll watch it again sometime soon. Thanks for bringing up this great memory.
DeleteWhile we are waiting for Professor T to start a new season, we are watching Season 1 again. Hub loves Murdock, a Canadian police detective show. I am looking forward to the Great British Baking Show. Meanwhile, we've been watching lots of NFL football. The Bronco v Rams game last night was a nail-biter!
ReplyDelete::football:: Here in New England we are...worrying...
DeleteThe only show I re-watch on a regular (by which I mean once a year) basis is the Thanksgiving episode of WKRP IN CINCINNATI.
ReplyDeleteAs God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.
DeleteWe lived in Texas on 40 acres for 35 years. I fed and enjoyed Wild turkeys. They do fly, just not high or for long. I saw them do so over the road and fence near our house.
DeleteOh, that sounds very special--I will have to find it!
DeleteSounds like some great shows I should be watching or rewatching! I would love it if you folks would mention where you are watching. I don't have Netflix or HBO so it would help to know if that is where one can watch.
ReplyDeleteI recently rewatched the entire House M.D. on Hulu. I think I enjoyed it more than I did 20 years ago. Of course one of the fun things is seeing guest stars and even minor actors of that time period and comparing them to where they are now.
I couldn't help but recall seeing Hugh Laurie on a talk show a few years ago. He told how his green card had expired and he totally forgot to renew it. Luckily, it was at least a few years ago, and someone must have reminded him to take care of it pronto. I'd hate to think what could happen if he forgot that now.
I wonder how many Hollywood actors are currently in the same boat? But, Laurie now lives in England permanently with his family - smart guy!
DeleteJudi, I think all the seasons of Elementary are on Prime.
Deletethank you!
DeleteYeas, the West WIng is on Netflix--but I bet it is elsewhere, too!
DeleteAll the Miss Marple actresses have died, so I am wondering if we'll just continue to get re-runs or if a new series & new Miss Marple will in the future?
ReplyDeleteOh, maybe Lesley Manville could play here--that would work!! Or who is the person in Marlow Murder Club?
DeleteI've never watched The West Wing. Just never got around to it somehow. And I agree with Rhys - I don't know why they keep rehashing Miss Marple.
ReplyDeleteWe stage our rewatching. But Babylon 5, Firefly, and Lewis are staples. We have a cycle - every few years. LOL
I'd love to rewatch Firefly. Thanks for the reminder, Liz.
DeleteI have never seen Firefly..what is it?
DeleteHank, think a Western Space Opera. Possibly one of the best ensemble cast productions ever. Produced by Joss Whedon. Unfortunately, he only got one season, but there is a movie, "Serenity," that kind of wraps up the lingering questions.
DeleteWhat Liz said. Nathan Fillion stars but the whole cast is fabulous. It's a crime the show didn't get more seasons.
DeleteI too, have the fondest memories of The West Wing from many years ago. It was family viewing when it was on, and one year my son and I stumbled upon the full series DVD package at a tremendous discount and that was my husband's Father's Day gift that year. I have re-viewed the entire series many times, and at this point am more likely to just cherry pick favorite episodes. I truly think it is some of the best writing to have ever graced TV screens.
ReplyDeleteAnother really old show that I am always willing to re-watch is M*A*S*H. It had such a long run that the writing changed significantly over its lifespan, but even its weakest episodes are decent, and its best episodes are brilliant.
Rick and I were just saying the other night that we'd like to rewatch MASH. I'm sure it's available somewhere...
DeleteSO agree about the writing .It is so brilliant. ANd it relies on the audience being smart and patient, since it is not always chronological.
DeleteMy husband worked in the Congress for many years and he has watched the entire series several times. He finds it to be a great respite from the current news. Yes change the map and while they are at it name the countries in their own language. Pet peeve. Denise Terry
ReplyDeleteA map in the countries on language is something I would like. I wonder if I could buy a European or Asian produced map which might have no English names. I will have to it check out.
DeleteOh, thats an interesting idea! ANd I worked in Congress, too--and it is so authentic!
DeleteMy husband and I watched The West Wing for the first time early in this year. We binge-watched, were absolutely astounded by its smart writing, its prescience, and that it seemed fresh. So after we finished I decided to watch it again, but this time only one episode at a time. I highly recommend it. There are things I missed when I binged. Some really thought-provoking episodes. Some silliness. I'm not nearly as caught up in the "romance" the second time around. The policy discussions could be right out of yesterday's news.
ReplyDeleteSO agree! The policy discussions are so thought-provoking, and so timely! I just wonder how that could be. But the writing, yes, you just hardly see that anymore.
DeleteWe didn't watch The West Wing the first go-round (although I have seen some individual episodes), but it sounds like a great time to do it now. Thank goodness for streaming, which allows us to catch up to shows we missed.
ReplyDeleteSorkin's shows tend to present a big challenge for his actors, which I often wonder about: the rapid-fire dialogue. How do they maintain that pace, and still get the emotional range right? It's utterly top-notch. Gilmore Girls had that same device, which sure keeps the story moving.
There are SO many TV and movie offerings available now, though, that it's bewildering, and offers far too much choice at times. But if I were going to rewatch a series I have already seen, I think it would be Mad Men. Another brilliantly conceived and acted storyline.
BEWILDERED here, too, Karen - Too much and then, when I see someone writing about something that I *do* want to see turns out it's behind yet another pay wall and a-peppered and a-salted with commercials every five minutes. Grumble.
DeleteYes, the ridiculous number of subscriptions! It is impossible to remember which service has which show any more. So maddening.
DeleteYes, the direction is perfect, and such a tightrope! And the camera work is so tricky and difficult. The production values are jaw-dropping.
DeleteI have never watched The West Wing, but am now newly inspired to track it down (so many streaming services to manage!). I can endlessly rewatch entire series of Bakeoff -- even when I remember exactly what happened (Bin Gate, anyone?) and who ended up winning, it is still heartwarming and affirming to witness all that pastry making and smart banter with kitchen utensils.
ReplyDeleteI could rewatch Bake Off, too, Amanda, not caring that I know who won. We happily started the new season last night!
Deleteoooh, cannot wait! x
DeleteI am definitely a fan of rewatching shows-especially heart-warming and/or funny shows in these challenging times. I will try West Wing and see if my heart can take it right now haha. Bake Off is at the top of my re-watch list as is Gilmore Girls and the Law and Order (original) series. I love to see a problem/crime solved in 45 minutes!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to hear what you think. I was worried it might be depressing--but whoa, not at all!
DeleteLoved TWW and have seen the early seasons multiple times, but like others am worried about how it would land now.
ReplyDeleteNow that Battlestar Galactica is back streaming, I would love to rewatch. And I need a Murderbot rewatch (Murderbot is my Sanctuary Moon).
You and me both, Lisa. We should have Sanctuary Moon badges!
DeleteMurderbot--I have not seen that!
DeleteMurderbot is so good. Alex Skarsgard is fabulous as Murderbot, but I think the books are even better than the TV adaptation, especially in audio. Martha Wells, the author, is a fellow Texan.
DeleteI might have to give Murderbot a try since I really like Alexander Skarsgard.
DeleteIn a meeting, back in an hour! Keep those posts coming!
ReplyDeleteWe watched The West Wing when it aired and absolutely loved it. (At the time, I wanted to get a bumper sticker that said, “Jed Bartlett is MY President”!) Our son watched our DVD set when he was in high school and college, but I don’t know if he ever finished it.
ReplyDeleteAs far as rewatching series, I don’t really do that because there’s always something new-to-us to watch. For example, we are watching Newsroom (another Aaron Sorkin show) for the first time and loving it. But the fear many of you shared above about whether The West Wing would be depressing in light of what is happening today is true with Newsroom. It’s a well-written, beautifully acted, but unfortunately prescient show.
I’ll watch an episode of MASH any time I see it, even if I can quote every line! — Pat S
Oh, newsroom, I forgot about that! Thank you! I will find that next-I remember loving it.
DeleteThanks to the recommendation here from Debs, just finished watching the English longboat vlog.. It covered three years of episodes. Since the last one was posted over a month ago, I am hoping there will be a new one soon.
ReplyDeleteConsidering what is going on politically, I don’t really want to watch anything along those lines even if it is fiction. I didn’t have an interest the first time around.
The only series I have re-watched several times is As Time goes by with Judi Dench and an excellent supporting cast and writing. They also added a couple of seasons after the original one ended.
I haven’t seen it recently but would consider watching it again.
Right now, because I live in MA, I have to concentrate on working on my ark.
Anon, so glad you are enjoying Kris Atomic! We, too, are eagerly awaiting a new episode. I signed up for her Patreon subscription, which has lots of other fun stuff, including some videos about her editing process and why it takes her so long to make these lovely films. She's also doing a casual book club there.
DeleteAlso, worrying about you all with the New England weather!!! We actually had some stuff fall from the sky here (McKinney, TX) today and it took us a while to figure out what it was... I think it is something like 63 days since we have had rain!
We would be happy to share, with the wind (although that part of the storm has died down) we could have sent some to you.
DeleteIf this had been a winter storm, it would have been several feet of snow. The rain is supposed to continue into tomorrow.
Rick corrected me. It had been 73 days since it rained! But we got an inch last night and this morning and are so happy.
DeleteYes, an ark would be SO helpful! YIKES it is STILL raining~
DeletePat D: No, I never watched The West Wing. With the exception of satire I tend to skip politics and doctor shows. I am hooked on The Diplomat though. The last show that I rewatched that made me cry was Black Adder. As you know, the characters are all killed off in a hilarious way each season. Not that final season though. It is WW1, and they all go over the top, never to be seen again. Oh, I bawled!
ReplyDeleteOur family loves well-written political shows. Did anyone else like MADAME SECRETARY? I always am interested in people trying to do good in the world. We have really liked THE DIPLOMAT, too, though the last cliffhanger really made me wonder in what direction Kate would move next season. (Selden)
DeleteMadame Secretary, --one of my favorites ever!) The DIplomat, and The AMericans! All so good!
DeleteWe liked the Diplomat very much too...
DeleteAnd from Madam Secretary, Teo Leoni and Tim Daly, who played Elizabeth and Henry McCord and who met on the show in 2014, got married last year. That made me happy. (Selden)
DeleteOh! As a self-employed person, I didn't realize it was Monday.
ReplyDeleteIt was so much easier to pop in here every morning. Now I have to remember if it's Monday or Thursday.
I watched every episode of West Wing live at the time and adored it. In the same way that I don't re-read books, I don't rewatch anything. I think it's time to change that, so thanks for the prod, Hank!
The days of the week all run together, that is SO true!
DeleteTo me, Joan Hickson was the perfect Miss Marple. These days I rarely watch television. When I do watch tv, it is mainly PBS programmes like Call the Midwife (I know Susan is not a fan of this show), Midsomer Murders, All Creatures Great and Small, Marlowe Murders, Grantchester, and many more.
ReplyDeleteThese days, I find myself reading books more often than watching television or watching movies on my computer.
Diana
SO much love for Miss Marple! xxx
DeleteLove the Agatha Christie adaptations. For those of you who like movie trivia, in the Margaret Rutherford film 'Murder She Said' adapted from Christie's '4:50 from Paddington' story, Joan Hickson plays one of the housekeepers at the mansion where Rutherford goes undercover as the cook.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great piece of trivia!! Thanks, Johna!
DeleteThat is a VERY valuable bit of info! Thank you!
DeleteI would love to watch reruns of the series "Boston Legal" long since retired back in 2008. However, I would have to subscribe to Hulu and chasing some of these shows plus paying additional fees is both exhausting and expensive. I never tire of watching Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond reruns because they always make me laugh and laughter is such great medicine. And luckily are part of my monthly cable coverage. I am not a huge TV fan unless it is either Masterpiece Theatre on PBS or we find an interesting movie to watch. Our Nor'easter film choice this past weekend was "The Christophers" with Ian McKellen and it was very entertaining.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I'm surprised at what I watch. I have never watched West Wing, but I might try it. But, then I binge watched Dexter, of all shows which I never thought I'd want to watch. Philip and I have rewatched The Diplomat, me with one rewatch and Philip with two. The good news is season four starts Oct. 15th on Netflix, so soon. I'm going to make time for the new Great British Baking Show this season. I still have to go back and pick up the last one. Husband has no tolerance for it, so I have to make room for it when he's not around, which I am determined to do this time. Oh, this weekend we went back to Widow's Island, which we had started but not kept up with, and we finished it. We felt like we wanted to know what happened. Well, some weird stuff happened for sure. And, talk about weird, I've always been fascinated by the Lizzy Borden saga, so I finally watched several episodes of the new one out on Monsters. It is definitely different than any other telling of the story. Lizzy is quite different than what you would expect. Oh, and I turned on an Agatha Christie the other night, an old one, and I couldn't keep watching it because the filming of it was so dated. It was the Seven Dials Murder, and the characters were rather stiff.
ReplyDelete
