Cat-alogue of Pupdates

JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: Does this need anymore introduction than to say, PETS ON PARAAAAADE!!! No, it does not.

Stephanie Michaels' bonded feral rescue cats. Not looking very feral, are they?

Roxanne Eflin's adventurous Shih Tzu Zoe is ready to tackle the Colorado Rockies (if you carry her.)

Margaret Turkevich's standard poodle Louie is "clueless but enthusiastic," while...

...Jazz waits for a mole to emerge. Good job, Jazz!

According to Pat Dupuy, 18 year old Jack loves his food, his walks, and his naps - and he lives to mess with his person, Frank.

Ann Mason has a FULL HOUSE when it comes to pets - plus an additional beautiful baby pic...

Edith Maxwell/Maddie Day's big, gentle Martin. I bet he gets sooo many cuddles.

Here's fan favorite Koda, courtesy of Liz Milliron, who tells us her greyhound is saying, “I totally smell that brisket sandwich. You better remember to pay your dog tax.”

Kathy G's Roberto likes to "help" her while working, so her daughter memorialized him in a meme!

Flora Church says, "these are  the two youngest cats--siblings and full of personality plus. I included the pic of Baggins with me because it's my favorite photo of him. I don't think he realizes that he's a cat; he's more like a toddler and very loving! His sibling has been catnapped by a nephew and I miss her dreadfully. Whenever I go visit, she leaps into my arms and purrs in my ear.

However, including Baggie, we have five cats and six was too stressful on the older cats. Then there's Nemo, the elderly mini-dachshund who pays no attention whatsoever to the cats, but who comes to get me whenever they have the audacity to make use of his bed.

"Paint me like one of your French girls, Jack."

I'm pretty sure Annette Dashofy's Kensi Kitty is saying, "No paparazzi, please."

This is Margo's new (deaf) kitten Prue, sharing space on "Geriatric Row" with Alf and trying to decide if she wants to be friends. Below, the Morning Walk, a train of up to six cats who follow Jack as he makes his rounds of the property. I'm sure he finds them very helpful, Margo.

These two sweeties belong to Audra Bayes. Look at those faces!!!!

J. Julian sent this to me with the caption, "Our Georgie Girl," and I immediately began singing the song. She is clearly the bestest earworm ever.

And now, my granddogs, courtesy of my daughter Victoria! On top is Janey, who's mellowed from an anxious street rescue to a placid Grande Dame. Below her is Karma, about whom we say, "You don't have to be smart, dear, you're can be pretty."

Coralee's beautiful quartet of cats: On top is "Kitsune. She is about 8 yo. Named for her color and for her fox like tail. Secondly, our oldest rescue, Major. She was a stray who lived as an outdoor cat until 2024. She is about 15-16 yo. You will recognize Kitsune behind her.

Last is Roshi (Japanese for "Old Teacher".) Our Zen cat stayed at the shelter for over a year before we adopted him. He weighs about 14.5 pounds. He is around 5 years old. Was dumped outside the shelter before they opened.

We love them all, they keep us grounded.

Maria Vetrano's absolutely adorable 4-year-old King Charles Spaniel, Mango Chutney. (What a great name!)

Cary Emig's 4-year-old Bernadoodle, Molly Moon, is obviously very sad because she never gets fed, not ever.

Maureen Murphy has a brand-new addition to her household: Oreo, a three-year-old terrier mix who was adopted on April 12. Welcome to your forever home, Oreo!
Love the little teefies

Judi Purcell says, "These two black kitties are Rosie and Rowdy. This is an older picture and now I can't tell which is which. But their personalities are very different so when they are active I know which one is up to mischief. I'm not going to name names but usually it isn't the girl kitty. Surprise!"

I'll let Susan Emerson tell you about Jack in her own words.

"My dear sister is a big dog lover and has always had a dog.  She is now in the early stages of dementia, and had already made the decision that when her current dog, Jack, passed, he would not be replaced.

Sadly,  his end came yesterday.  We had to put Jack down, and we took him out to the farm of our nephew to be buried.  It was a heartbreaking day in many ways, but I think being able to bury him on a family farm made a lot of difference in how the experience felt by the end of the day.

Jack was a mutt, seemingly some kind of miscellaneous terrier, poodle, mystery mix.  He had the sweetest personality and the most soulful eyes of  just about any dog I've ever known."

We're so sorry for your family, Susan. The great joy of a dogs life is that they can be with their best friend their whole lives, the great sorrow or ours is that we cannot.

On another side of that equation, Kathy Lynn Emerson sent a picture of Shadow, who belonged to the late and much-missed Lea Wait. Lea left her to Kathy and Sandy, where, Kathy says, "She's been the boss at chez Emerson ever since."

This sweet ol' muffin is Waldo, and he and Betty Fellows are coming up to their 13th adoption anniversary! That makes him somewhere between 15 and 17 years old, but clearly, he's living his best and  most comfy life.

Linda Rangus's foster cat Mac is waiting for Windows updates to finish. I feel you, Mac, I feel you. Mac is being sponsored by the Lulu's Locker Rescue, Frankfort, IL, so if any of you live near the Windy City and are looking for that special friend/ work supervisor, let us Linda know!

Pat S's Buddy clearly likes to get in the weeds of his work, which is looking handsome while lounging.

And finally, you may all remember Walker, the $15,000 cat. He's now living in The Hague (no, not as a prisoner) and enjoying life as a sophisticated, urbane kat.

Yes, it's an Air Tag. No more spontaneous escapes for Walker.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to share their pets with us, and to add a reminder: when hard times hit the economy, pets can suffer. Please consider donating to your local animal shelter or animal fund helping people pay veterinary costs. We rely on them, and they rely on us.💖

  7. These adorable photos remind me of how precious and meaningful life is when these wonderful creatures share their journey with us. Our world at times may be a muddled mess but nothing calms our fears and thoughts like cuddles and walks and "conversations" with our special family members.. Their world consists of love, loyalty, warmth, treats and trust. They are our teachers when we fail to show compassion for others and they fill a household with joy and laughter with their antics. I also love all the interesting names people choose to name their family pets and why they choose them especially when they are people names. For sixty-five years my world was shared with either dogs or cats...and sometimes both... but the last five have been void of pet cuddles and companionship. The loss of our last two family members, Bo (23!) and Leonora (17) within a few years of each other took its toll on us and we have hesitated to take that journey again. It's so painful to lose them especially as we grow older ourselves and our medical responsibilities have shifted. But never say never especially when I look at these photos above. They are a reminder of how special life is when shared with these wonderful companions. Thank you for sharing these pictures...and your pets....with this reader. I thoroughly enjoyed starting my day this way. And I do remain curious as to how all of you came to name your family companions. :-)

    1. As an added postscript we do continue to support our local animal shelters, national organizations especially those who provide service animals as well as the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine (Tufts University). Thank you for the reminder of how important it is to donate to these important charities and causes.

    2. Martin at age four came from our nephew with that name, so we kept it.

    3. Thank you, Edith. I love the name Martin! He's a handsome boy...

    4. Koda is an ex-racer. His track name was "KB's Koda." I think KB was his owner's initials. Anyway, the name Koda generally means "friend" or "ally" in Native American cultures, specifically in the Dakota language and was the name of the little bear in the "Brother Bear" movie. We liked it so we kept it.

    5. Liz ~ I love the meaning behind the name Koda. It fits your "baby" perfectly! Koda's brindle coat is beautiful. You are a good soul to be a part of a greyhound rescue program.

    6. Edith, you and I are clearly pet name buddies: we both have a Neko chan, and I had a beloved dog named Marvin!

    7. Kitsune was 'named" Martha we chose Kitsune from our love of Japanese culture. Roshi was labeled "Pepper" maybe because he was black and white, more likely because he had such skin problems. that is why he was at the shelter for so long. He was in the hospital unit for a while. He was so discouraged when we adopted him that it took him about 4 months to decide to begin talking to us. Major, the outdoor cat, was given a non generic name until we could get close enough to discover her gender. It took years for her to finally decide to come inside.

    8. Coralee ~ I love your idea of choosing names/titles connected to Japanese culture. The use of the word Kitsune to describe your cat with the fox-like tail is perfect! :-) My late Aunt Saiko was born and grew up in Japan until she met my uncle who was in the Air Force and on leave in Tokyo. They fell in love...each not understanding the other's language...but no matter. They married and eventually had two sons also born in Japan. When my uncle retired from the military and and they returned to the States they settled in New Hampshire. My Uncle Andrew never mastered speaking the Japanese language but understood it and the same for my Aunt Saiko who spoke very little English but always understood what my uncle and nephews were saying to her. She would have enjoyed the fact that you were partial to the Japanese culture.

  10. It does not surprise me at all to see so many beautiful and adored pets in each family. The only ones not in the parade are Hank’s ducks! This only confirmed my love for this group and how many of us have rescued these pets at some point in the animal’s life, and we can all witness how much they love and are loved.

  17. I enjoyed all the photos and comments this morning. My heart dog Maya looks a lot like Liz Milliron’s Koda but with a lot more white on her face now that she is turning 9. We have had several dogs, and cats, through the years and Maya is our third greyhound (5th in the family counting our daughter’s greyhounds). We have loved them all but Maya is the most affectionate by far and can be very vocal when she wants attention: she will look at me and “talk” which often becomes a howl! (Barbara C.)

    1. Ah, the greyhound talk. It starts soft and pathetic and becomes more insistent if you do not obey. I know it well.

Koda turned 9 last December. He is amazingly not gray for an old man - although if I look at the pictures from when we first adopted him I can definitely see a lightening on his face.

  20. So many wonderful furry companions! Thanks for sharing them, Reddies! It's fun to see how their personalities shine in the photos!

I started to share our intermittent pets, the grand doggos, but couldn't find good pics. Between my allergies and our difficult to fence yard, we are content with the wild "pets" that choose to hang out with us sometimes. Skunks, foxes, and deer make lousy housemates, though, and we miss out on cuddles.

  21. Thanks to everyone who shared their pet photos today! I love dogs and would love to have one (or three), but my circumstances don’t permit it. I got my “dog” (and “cat”) “fix” today!

  26. I enjoyed seeing all the beautiful furry friends. They give so much to us, enriching our lives with their love and companionship. We are currently without a dog, as our dear Lulu crossed the bridge last November. She was a beautiful and sweet Brittany Spaniel rescue dog, and we have started looking at available rescues at the National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network. We've gotten two Brittany dogs through them, Coco and Lulu. Thanks for a lovely post today, Julia.

    1. Thank you, Kathy! Yes the breed rescue organizations can be wonderful for folks who love a particular breed, but are also open to adopting rather than shopping. They do great work.

  27. Julia, thank you so much for getting our Buddy’s picture in so late. That was completely his mama’s fault; he’s happy to pose for pictures any time! And thanks for the shout out to rescue organizations. We got Buddy from a wonderful organization called Frosted Faces in Ramona, CA (just outside of San Diego). They specialize in rescuing senior animals (mostly dogs, but a few cats). We were told Buddy was 8 when we got him in January ‘22, but DNA tests have said he was at least a year younger so we are saying he’s now 10. The young couple who started Frosted Faces cover veterinary costs through donations, so yes, please remember the rescue and shelter organizations. — Pat S
