What We're Watching

DEBORAH CROMBIE: Now that we've totally filled our TBR lists/stacks, how about a catch up on what's filling our time when we're NOT reading.

In our house, we are glued to The Pitt every week. I have loved Noah Wyle since he was baby John Carter on ER, but even so I never imagined he would do something this good. The acting (from the entire cast) and writing and directing are fabulous, and the show is a look at America today that tells you more than any news story. And the camera work! Watch, if you will, how the scenes are set up, how the camera pans from one group to the next as the scenes change. It's really brilliant. Alas, after today there are only two episodes to go. Will Dr. Robby get to take his sabbatical?

We are also watching a series called
The Capture on Prime, starring Holliday Grainger, whom you may know as Robin Ellacott in the series adapted from Robert Galbraith's Cormoran Strike novels. I'd read that The Capture was the best police series since Line of Duty and halfway through season 1 we are gripped!! It is currently in the third season and if I had the time I'd be bingeing it.

From Wikipedia, which gives a better summary than I can: "The series is centred on DI Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger), a fast-track Metropolitan Police detective drawn into a vast conspiracy involving real-time deepfake technology, mass surveillance and manipulated video evidence." Yikes!

It will definitely make you want to avoid CCTV cameras!!

And since you can't be serious all the time, I am enjoying the spring season (how many ever this is...) of The Voice, my guilty pleasure. Coaches this season are Adam Levine, John Legend, and--yay!!--Kelly Clarkson, my favorite Dallas girl. (Actually, she's from Burleson, which is a suburb of Fort Worth, but close enough.)

Also, we are watching the new season of The Rookie. Yes, I know it's preposterous, but it's also funny and sharp. We've watched every season for eight years and are very attached to the characters.

Fellow Reds, what's on your screens these days?

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: Oh, we saw The Capture, and loved it! We are in PARADISE, so clever and smart and scary. Total escapist, in a way. Or terrifying.  YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS with Jon Hamm (who is not my fave, but he is so good in this!) Also THE MEMORY OF A KILLER, about an  ice-cold mob hit man (leading a double life as a middle-class husband/ copier salesman) who is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. (what could go wrong?) Such a good premise!

RHYS BOWEN: At the moment TV has to be super distracting and not in any way stressful. So Britbox. Escape to the Country. Glass blowers. Etc. luckily there have been two major tennis tournaments I’ve watched non stop

LUCY BURDETTE: The only thing I’ve been watching is the new season of The Lincoln Lawyer. It’s comfort viewing in its own way, and not as silly as it was getting in the last season. (Lorna, in those silly new lawyer outfits drove me crazy.) I will have to ask John about The Capture and start it with him if he hasn’t seen it.

We are also watching basketball–both of our UCONN teams made it into the Final Four, the men capturing the slot in a last minute 3 pointer that had all the tension a writer could want! The following weekend will be the Masters so that will keep us busy too:).

JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: Everyone I know is raving about THE PITT, so I guess I’m going to have to give it a try. I DO love Noah Wyle.

As usual, I’m going to put in a plug for Kdramas. I just watched two fantastic shows back to back. TEMPEST, streaming on Hulu (or Disney+) is both an international political thriller and an amazingly heart-pounding romance. Part of the story is set in DC’s State Department, with John Cho (love him!) as an undersecretary trying to stop a nuclear attack on the Korean penninsula. It’s only nine episodes (many Kdramas are 16) so it’s a terrific way to dip your toe in.

For something more immersive but equally riveting: CRASH LANDING ON YOU available on Netflix. This show has everything: mystery, intrigue, humor - loads of humor, heartbreak, delightful found families and, most importantly the best couple chemistry you’ll ever see from Hyun Bin, playing a stern-outside, marshmallow-inside North Korean officer and Son Yi-jin as an heir to a fabulously wealthy corporate family who, as the title says, crash lands on him after a crazy paragliding accident. The chemistry was real - the stars got married after the show was released and now have a three-year old!

Jenn, if you haven’t seen this already, I think you’d love it.

JENN McKINLAY: I loved CRASH LANDING, Julia!!! So good! Very interesting to see the differences in North and South Korea. My recent fave K-Dramas are VINCENZO, Italian mafioso who is also Korean - very edge of the seat action with a solid bad guy, and ROMANCE IS A BONUS BOOK, set in a publishing house where their love of books and writing was just so nice and refreshing. Love me the K-Dramas!

Hub and I are watching ROOSTER, starring Steve Carrell as an author in residence on a college campus, very fun. And we just finished The LOWDOWN, starring Ethan Hawke, small town newspaper writer/bookstore owner in Tulsa who gets embroiled in political crimes. Also, excellent.

HALLIE EPHRONI've been looking forward to seeing PROJECT HAIL MARY on the big screen and my daughter Molly and I went last weekend. The theatre was packed and the movie was a lot of fun. Highly recommended. In the meanwhile I'm slowly streaming the rest of RIOT WOMEN. It's heavy/heady stuff and requires many deep breaths between innings.

DEBS: Such fun suggestions! I love John Cho so will definitely check out TEMPEST, and ROOSTER and THE LOWDOWN sound fun.

How about you, dear readers? Tell us what you're watching!

  2. We are halfway through the latest season of “Paradise” and I have no idea how it’s going to resolve itself. We started Season 3 of “Guilt” last night on PBS (but I think it must be on BritBox, too). We just finished the third season of “Night Agent” last weekend. We need to resume “Ted Lasso” because we only have seen the first season, but absolutely loved it. We are midway through the first season of “The Pitt” but keep forgetting to watch it. My husband is in the home stretch (or maybe that’s not until next weekend) of Tax Season so “The Pitt” is a little too heavy for him right now. I’m trying to suggest we just watch Disney movies until the 15th…. — Pat S

  3. Call the Midwife every Sunday! Yes, I can watch it whenever I want, but I like the ritual of watching it on Sunday evening. Otherwise, it's Red Sox season and World Cup prep games, so the TV is occupied by its owner most of the time, LOL.

    2. I love Call the Midwife for how they portray the history that we grew up with, emphasizing gently such things as polio, thalidomide, and of course vaccinations. The attention to environments (change in kitchen styles), clothes, and of course, always the cub scouts.

Right now Hope Street, set in Northern Ireland on the coast. Mostly set around the police s ration and local pub. Also, when it’s on My Name is Murder with Lucy Lawless, set in Australia/New Zealand. Hoping they bring back The Brokenwood Mysteries, set in New Zealand. And of course, Call the Midwife now. All creatures Great and Small. Our regular on Netflix is The Lincoln Lawyer . 6. Like Edith, I love watching Masterpiece Theatre's programs on Sunday evenings as they are happening; no recordings for later unless absolutely necessary. Presently "Call the Midwife" is on my radar. Now in its 15th season it has been fascinating to watch England's history unfold in London during the late 1950's up to the 1970's. This season brings forth the earnest beginnings of the Women's Liberation Movement and how it affects the nurse midwives and the nuns of Nonnatus House. On the side of mystery and murder I am watching the series "Dark Winds" about the Navajo Tribal Police solving crimes on their reservation during the 1970's. Robert Redford was one of the Executive Producers for the show before he passed and it is based on Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn/Chee novels. This season's villain, Vaggan, is fascinating to watch as she becomes obsessed with Navajo police officer Joe Leaphorn as he pursues her off the reservation into Los Angeles. I can't say that I blame her as I am crazy about Zahn McClarnon who plays Leaphorn, too. :-) Last night my husband and I despite having dinner in a restaurant broke our rule of no phones on the table and watched the Artemis II Moon Mission Launch as it went into space around 6:30 EST. It's always exciting to see the space programs expand but nothing tops sitting in a living room on the night of July 20, 1969 and seeing Apollo 11 make the first Moon landing with Neil Armstrong being the first person to set foot on the surface of the Moon.

    1. We love CALL THE MIDWIFE. Watching it with my parents, I noticed the time period is around the same time I was born. I asked my parents if there was a midwife when I was born and they said there was no midwife. I was born in a cottage hospital on the west coast of the USA. The doctors and nurses were NOT kind people. My parents remember the doctors did Not like babies at all.

    2. Canada CBC is full tilt on the moon mission, and thankfully mostly ignoring other USA news. The two reporters are top reporters in Canada. They are set somewhere watching everything happen and hopping and giggling like two young boys. They make the story with their enthusiasm! I looked up their birthdays, and Ian was born in 1962, and there is no date for Paul, but I suspect he would be about the same age. They would have been kids to watch the moon walk. No Walter Cronkite in their report, but what a pleasure to watch.

  7. Debs, there are so many wonderful shows to watch! If THE PITT is on Netflix or Apple +, then I would love to watch it. Not on Acorn TV nor BritboxTV, right? I'm currently watching THURSDAY MURDER CLUB (again) and EAT, PRAY, BARK, a German ? movie about people and their dogs at a very unusual dog obedience school. It is hilarious and I loved it. It was Jenn who mentioned CRASH LANDING and I loved it. I also watched VINCENZO. Another K-Drama, which I loved, is BEYOND THE BAR, highly recommended. On Acorn TV, I caught up on LIFE IS MURDER, which is set in New Zealand, and thought maybe Lucy would enjoy this show. On BritboxTV, I am catching up on the new episodes of FATHER BROWN. An actress friend is going to appear on FATHER BROWN and in her Instagram stories, she called the actor "Mr. Weasley". The actor, who plays Father Brown, is the same actor who plays the father of Ron Weasley in Chris Columbus' Harry Potter movies twenty five ? years ago.

Hallie, a relative mentioned RIOT WOMEN and it is on my list of shows to watch eventually.

  9. Lucy Lawless! Must check out that show (if only because once upon a time we were all such huge Xena fans!) I am jotting show titles down like crazy, because these all sound so good, and somehow when we need a new show, I can never think of the ones that sounded watch-worthy. Deb, you’ve persuaded me to move The Pitt up to the top of the list, and The Capture sounds promising too. We’ve been in rather dire straits since the latest season of Slow Horses ended, because our usual emergency comfort go-to (BritBox) betrayed us with Grantchester (which a friend of mine refers to as Slutty Vicar). It wasn’t the sluttiness so much (in fact, that was sort of the best part) but the episodes just kept getting darker and darker until finally the last one made me jump up shouting “All the no!”

  11. We just finished The Count of Monte Cristo – it was interesting – hard to get used to the characters, which took the first 2 episodes. Have a lot of other PBS shows on catch up - Bookish, Puzzle Lady, Happiness,(all on PBS Masterpiece subscribe), and have to watch Call the Midwife (alone- he won’t watch it) and The Forsythes as they come on each week. Shetland got lost, so have to rewatch to catch up, just found The Lady on Britbox, which is the story of the Queen’s dresser. Monty Don is back on new episodes of Gardner’s World – always a joy to watch. For documentaries – Patagonia on Prime and I just discovered Spectacular Earth on BBC Select. Hamnet is on Prime, but that needs a night when I am in a good mood and not likely to fall asleep. It is 2 hrs 7 mins – there will probably be a nap…I didn’t like the book. As soon as The Pitt is over, I will buy the Crave subscription and binge-watch season 2. I wish it was carried on another carrier, as Crave has nothing else that we like. Still think we are going to have to get Netflix, as it has Thursday Murders and British Bake-off, but right now we are backed up with shows to watch, and we could just add Acorn and really be over the top.

  12. What am I not watching?

Well, I gave up Disney+ for at least 2 months so I can't watch Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 yet.

On Tubi, I've got 265 different titles on my My Stuff list.

On Peacock, I'm watching Chicago PD and Chicago Fire the most. But the Law & Order shows are in there too. Plus Happy's Place.

On CBS/Paramount+ I've got the NCIS shows, the Star Trek shows, Boston Blue, Ghosts. I have given up on Elsbeth and Matlock. I'm a little behind on Watson but hope to catch up soon since it has officially been cancelled.

Netflix is mostly rewatches of stuff like Mom and The West Wing. But I did see The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 which I loved.

HBO Max is a rewatch of The Big Bang Theory and new episodes of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Plus, stuff like The Last Ship and ER. And since it is now the 15th anniversary of Game of Thrones, I'm rewatching that.

I don't have Hulu but I do watch the ABC dramas I like via the network's website. There's a week delay but free is better than a monthly charge. So I watch The Rookie, High Potential and Will Trent that way. Plus the revival of Scrubs.

I've started watching Death in Paradise but that's going slow since only the first season is available for free on Prime and on Youtube. Speaking of Prime, I have access to that through May so I'm working on finishing my rewatch of Elementary plus trying to get to Young Sherlock Holmes as well.

Via Youtube, I'm watching the Australian police drama Blue Heelers and the Jeremy Brett-led Sherlock Holmes series. I'm also wasting a LOT of time watching channels where the people are doing first-time watches of shows like Firefly, Game of Thrones and more.

Basically, since I don't go out much now, if I'm home and not either on the computer or reading, I am watching TV. And sometimes I'm reading during the ads.

Jay, I laughed when you said you had 265 saves on your "My Stuff" list - I started doing the same for Rakuten, the Asian drama service I subscribe to, and now I get so overwhelmed whenever I see the enormous number of titles in "My Shows" I immediately switch away! It's quite possible I'll die with the same number of unwatched shows I have right now...

  13. My son was just home for a couple of weeks and we went to a live Trail Blazers game, my first since before the pandemic. So fun. So I've been watching the Blazers as the season winds down. Since Matt went back to Chicago, we've been doing Teleparty watching of The Great British Baking Show, and for whatever reason, Love is Blind Germany. 14. Hallie, we thought about going to see Project Hail Mary at our local theater, but it involved leaving the house so we settled for Crazy, Stupid Love on Netflix. We'll catch Project Hail Mary at some point. We do enjoy Ryan Gosling.

We're stockpiling episodes of Daredevil so we can binge and we have not get jumped into The Lincoln Lawyer. We've been stuck in comfort viewing. We watched every episode of Lewis (on DVD) and now we are watching Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. I don't know if we'll make it through the last season (where it got weird). At that point, we'll probably pick up Daredevil or Lincoln Lawyer.

We are also waiting for the new season of Department Q on Netflix.

    3. "Involved leaving the house!" I so get it. I am tempted by Project Hail Mary, but we love our big TV so will probably wait until we can watch at home. And, yes, the sound in theaters is deafening--even if you are already a little deaf!

    4. Also, Hail Mary is REALLY long. I'd rather wait and watch it in two installments at home.

      Delete
    5. Edith, it seems like most movies are way too long. They used to be around 2 hours, and now most are around 3. That's why we hardly ever watch movies. Good idea to split it into two watchings.

      Delete
    6. I agree! We usually split movies into two installments, and sometimes three if they are really long. Plus, in theaters I always have to get up to go to the bathroom and miss something important. "Pause" and close captioning are the way to go!

      Delete
    7. I hadn't checked the run time on Hail Mary. Three hours? That means even with a 7pm start time, after enduring 15 minutes (at least) of previews we wouldn't get out of the theater and home until at least 10:30pm. Way past our bedtime. LOL At home we can either break it into two parts or start early. We also have a big TV, so if I put the recliner back, it's (almost) a movie theater experience - and at a sound level I can control!

  15. I'm in the same camp as Rhys: we have just been wanting comfort TV. For us that has meant finally finishing the current season of The Chosen (which was hardly comforting to watch in and of itself, but comforting in a broader way), the newest season of My Life is Murder, the current seasons of the three NCIS shows and Tracker that are currently showing, and a recent re-watch of Van der Valk and MacDonald & Dodds. I appreciate this day on JR -- I have noted a few new-to-me things we might try!

  16. Count me in as another who has been bingeing MY LIFE IS MURDER. I'm sad to be finished with it, the main characters are all so appealing, and the beauty shots of Aukland are swoonworthy! Plus, it's just plain fun.

Steve and I got started watching NEW TRICKS on Acorn, and he has been watching (aka, sleeping through) 2-3 episodes at a time. I'm waiting until he's done, so we don't disrupt one another's place in the timeline. Fun cop show about a female DCI who heads a crew of retired but brilliant police officers solving cold cases. The DCI is played by Amanda Redman, who was the lead doctor in the brilliant GOOD KARMA HOSPITAL, and is unrecognizable as the vicar's mother in MURDER AT EVENSONG, another fun Brit crime show (but not as good as GRANCHESTER).

Really enjoyed Phyllis Logan chewing up the scenery as THE PUZZLE LADY, a radical departure from her Downton Abbey persona of Mrs. Hughes. And speaking of PBS, if you have not had the chance, I recommend BOOKISH, which is full of delightful twists, and Mrs. Book is played by BRIDGERTON's Lady Featherington, Polly Walker.

I recently finished NO OFFENCE, which stars a very different Joanna Scanlan than her RIOT WOMEN character, and have started SCOTT & BAILEY.

Now I am waiting for the next season of DEATH IN PARADISE (which will be the last), and BEYOND PARADISE.

    2. Is next season really to be the last one of Death in Paradise? I had not heard that and am SO disappointed. I think that show found the perfect balance of mystery and humor. We didn't find Beyond Paradise quite as charming, though I do like it somewhat. We have also been watching Return to Paradise, a spinoff set in Australia with a pretty interesting lead character who is clearly on the autism spectrum.

    3. "Death in Paradise will return for a 16th season. The BBC has confirmed the show's renewal, with filming for the new series scheduled to begin in Guadeloupe in April 2026, setting the stage for a release expected in 2027."

  20. I love Shrinking, in its third season on Apple TV. Last night's episode seemed like it might be the last (no!) since there are so many changes happening, but I Googled it and found there is one more episode. And it has been renewed for Season 4 (whew)! Love Harrison Ford in that show.

Love on the Spectrum started a new season last night, which made me very happy. I think all of the episodes are available. I have also started Rooster, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast (close captioning definitely required!), and Bookish. For some reason, I haven't gotten into Bridgerton this season (hard to top the last one) and haven't kept up with The Lincoln Lawyer, though I definitely will. Queer Eye's last season has been fantastic. On broadcast TV, I am addicted to Will Trent and also watch Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage (I think that's the title) and Ghosts. I'm excited about Ted Lasso's upcoming new season, although I'm nervous that it won't be as wonderful as seasons past. And my guilty pleasure continues to be The Traitors--every season, every version that's in English (US, UK New Zealand, Australia). Love it!!

  21. Thank you all for the recommendations. Love THE PITT. It's the only medical show my husband (retired doc) has ever liked, and he loves it. We are recovering from binging on a show we'd never watched--The West Wing. Several friends said they were rewatching it for comfort. Talk about binge! We sometimes watched four episodes in one night. I don't know whether it made me feel better or worse about our current political situation. Looking forward to trying some of the others mentioned here. Meanwhile, we just finished the latest season of All Creatures Great and Small. A little sweet for my taste, but it's a comfort watch.

    1. The West Wing was so fabulous. I'm not sure I could bear to watch it now, with the current state of things... Glad to know David approves of The Pitt. It is so good, and Noah Wyle is so committed to getting things right.

    2. It's definitely sobering to watch how things used to be--even fictionalized, there was a feeling that both sides of the political spectrum had a point.

    3. I dont know exactly when or how the extreme polarization of party affiliation began, but I can remember when Sen Goldwater ran against, I think it was Kennedy, my parents saw Kennedy as a liberal out to destroy American values.

  22. Terry, curious to ask your husband if THE PITT is a somewhat accurate portrayal of what happens in ER's? My husband is a defense lawyer and he can't watch legal shows because he says they are so fictionalized as to be not about lawyers and the law but dramatic stories. Which of course is what makes for good TV.

    1. Me again from above - hubby does like NCIS the show about Navy Jag officers. He is a retired JAG officer and finds it more about a mystery each week than law but he still enjoys it.

    2. That's interesting, Anon. My husband is a retired cop and loves The Rookie. Even though much of the action is silly--only three patrol cars in LA and they always happen to be right there!--he says what they get right is the interaction between the characters and the sense of community in the department.

    3. He not only says it is accurate, but often will stop the show to tell me about something that actually happened when he was in ER rotation. He says it's real!

    4. That's very interesting Debs and Terry, thanks!

  23. The nonTV person here. But 8 years and still a Rookie? ;-) And I was disappointed and confused: hoping the Paradise was a new season of BBC’s Murder in Paradise. Happy Watching,, everyone. Elisabeth

    1. John Nolan is not still a Rookie! But there are always new rookies.

    2. Hi Elisabeth, I get so confused there is a Death in Paradise - set in the Caribbean, Beyond Paradise - a spin off of Death in Paradise set in England, and Return to Paradise which is another spin off of Death in Paradise set (I think) in Australia.
Then there in a show called Paradise, Almost Paradise, and Return to Paradise.
      Whew!!

  24. Oh and Murder in Paradise too. I think this is a documentary of true crime.

  25. Debs, I am going to have to watch The Pitt. I'm a fan of Noah Wylie, too, and I constantly hear how good the show is. I'm not sure if my husband will want to watch that one, but I know I can get him to watch The Capture, so it will probably be next up for us. I started out watching The Rookie, as I love Nathan Fillion, and for some reason I let it go. I can't remember if they changed nights or what, but I watched a rerun episode of it last night, and decided I will have to go back and pick it up again. I'm not sure where I stopped, but I'll find it. I was also thinking about what a successful career Nathan Fillion has had--Firefly, Serenity, Castle, The Rookie, Green Lantern to name some well-known ones. Hallie, my husband has mentioned wanting to see Hail Mary. We may actually go to the movie theater.

We watched Your Friends and Neighbors with Jon Hamm, and we were surprised that we liked it. Hank, Jon Hamm isn't a favorite for me either, but like you, I thought he did a great job in this series. My husband loved Pluribus, and I was on the liked it scale, but I am looking forward to Season Two, which I don't think will be out until next year, a long time to wait. I'm also looking forward to Season Four of Ted Lasso, but I'm so hoping it's going to be really good. I think I've mentioned this before, but Philip and I were surprised that we enjoyed Bad Monkey so much, but we did. What really surprised me about liking it so much is that Vince Vaughn is the lead character, and I've never much cared for him, but he nailed his role in Bad Monkey.

What's disappointing is that my husband doesn't care for my shows on PBS, Call the Midwife and All Creatures Great and Small. I will have to find a time to catch up on those.

    1. Mine, either, Kathy, and as we usually just watch TV together for an hour in the evenings, it makes it hard to catch up on the things he doesn't like. I used to watch on the small TV in the kitchen when I was cooking or doing dishes, but I'm spoiled by the big TV now. And I especially want the big screen for All Creatures and its gorgeous Yorkshire scenery.

And I hope you enjoy picking up The Rookie again. One of the things we really love are the great female characters, and the friendships between them.

    2. Oh Debs, the Yorkshire countryside is absolutely stunning! Makes me want to plan another trip to England.

  26. Does anyone, especially Canadians, watch MURDOCK? My hub is absolutely obsessed with this show which has been on TV for something like 20 seasons.
