Live Reds Reds Reds! Tonight, only on Reds and Readers!

Sorry, there will NOT be a full liquor bar. BYOB.

Julia Spencer-Fleming: That's right, dear readers, tonight for one night only (until March 17th, that is) you can see Reds, Reds, Reds live and in person on Reds and Readers!

WHEN: Saturday, February 17, at 7PM Eastern/ 4PM Pacific

WHERE: Reds and Readers FB Group

DRESS: Extremely comfortable

In preparation for our second livestream chat, we thought we'd ask YOU for your input. What questions would you like to see us address? What topics should we dig into, in the Reds and Readers group and on this blog? What are we doing that you like, and what can we improve on?

Think of it as a job interview or performance review... and you're the boss. (We do, after all, make our living when you all buy our books!

And I'm going to answer a question I know many of you have: how to join us tonight?

Just show up on Reds and Readers (remember, you need to be a member, so if you aren't yet, sign up now!)

NO link. NO special app or program. Just open up the page in Facebook and - taa daa! There we are.

You can talk to us, ask questions, and chat with each other in the comment thread, just as you usually do.

So hop on the comments and tell us what you want to know!

  1. I don't have a specific question, but I'm looking forward to this evening's chat . . . .

  2. I enjoy this blog and I'm planning to join in tonight while my husband watches the Three Stooges. LOL I have no specific questions either. I did like hearing about research for your books.

    1. Paula, I can't believe there's another adult man who watches the Three Stooges. I thought mu husband was the last one!

    2. May the world never run out of “adult” male Stooge watchers! Or the women who love them. Elisabeth

  3. Tonight will be fun!

Serious question: How do each of you juggle your writing with all the other things going on in your life (travel, promotion, teaching, family, pets, exercise, and so on)?

Light question: It'd be fun to have lightning rounds like you sometimes ask guests: Coffee or tea? Chocolate or pizza? Take out or go out? Dogs or cats? Mountains or beach? That kind of thing.

    1. I like the lightning round suggestion

    2. Those are both excellent questions/ suggestions, Edith!

  4. Although we meet other authors on JRW all the time, and the seven of you help promote their books, I think that many people who have joined Reds and Readers would like to know more about each of you. I'd like to hear about all the different types of books you've written (in Jenn's case for instance), the different names or pseudonyms you've used, where your ideas for characters come from (Georgie's granddad, Rhys), where you grew up or what shaped your interest in writing. I think it's fun to get to know each of you personally a little.

    1. That's good to know, Judy. I know last time we were afraid to hog the event, as it were, with our own stories.

  5. Please forgive me, dear Reds. I would love to see you all and listen to you answer questions, and I'd even stay up until my 1 a.m. for that pleasure. But this Sunday I need to get up early. Maybe next time!

    1. Kim, I wouldn't stay up until 1am for this, and I'm one of the speakers! :-)

Maybe we can schedule a special European edition sometime for all our friends who are five or six hours ahead.

    2. Love that suggestion, Julia! — Pat S

  6. If all of you jointly authored a novel, with all of you also as the cast of characters, which one would be the killer?

  7. Not for tonight, but maybe put this idea in the file of ideas for later: What kinds of music you each enjoy, and whether or not you listen to anything while you're writing. Lori Rader-Day usually has a playlist for each of her books, and while I can never see any connection, personally, the meaning of each selection inspires her somehow. Do any of you use music in this way?

I'll be pulling in late, I think, but hope to join you partway through. It's always so much fun to see and hear you all, especially laughing together!

    1. We really do have fun with these things, Karen. Also, it helps to have a sense of humor is anything goes awry!

  8. In keeping with the sassy vibe set by the image leading the post, I've become more of a "belle du jour." Evening events can be a challenge for me. If I can pop in for a moment, I will.

  9. I'm not sure I can join you live tonight, but I know it will be fun! Question: For you Reds with a long-running series, what one thing (or more) do you wish you could change in that first book? What story-line thread do you wish you could snip -- but you know your readers would be angry about?

    1. Oh, boy, Amanda, I think that might make an excellent blog topic, because I have THINGS TO SAY about this.

  10. Q: Not counting the hilarious game shows that the REDS often have at mystery conferences, what is your most fave memory/event at a mystery conference? And what was your weirdest or worst experience?

    1. I suspect some of Ross's shenanigans might be the weirdest, Grace!

  11. Last month's happy hour was so fun! I will have to watch the video after the fact this time, as we are lucky enough to have Celtic scholar, poet, and prophet John Philip Newell in Portland this weekend and the final event conflicts with the Reds gathering. Enjoy!

    1. Oh, Gillian, that sounds amazing. But you know, one of the things we loved about the decision to always have the event on the 17th of the month was that it would take place on different evenings, so sooner or later everyone would have a chance to join in.

  12. I'm hoping to be there for tonight's livestream.

Serious Question: With the revelations that the Hugo Awards eliminated potential book award nominees because of how they might go over when the event was held in China, what do the Reds think needs to be done to ensure integrity in the nomination and awarding process for book awards regardless of genre.

For a primer on the latest book world controversy here's a link: https://www.vulture.com/article/hugo-awards-china-censorship-controversy.html

Light Question: Exactly where does Hank get the energy to go on her book tours, which seem to resemble a similar schedule to rock bands in the 1980s? I'm tired just READING her schedule of events page, never mind trying to imagine keeping up with her.

    1. We'd all like to know the answer to that last one, Jay...

I've read about the Hugo awards - can we call is a debacle? - I'm not impressed. I don't believe in pre-censoring books. On the other hand, if you're having a con where most of the guests are citizens of the CPR, is it fair to nominate books they might actually get in trouble for reading? I dunno. I sure glad I'm not on the Hugos committee.

  13. I hope it is available to replay tomorrow, as the last one was. My question is why do some of you have a nom de plume, and which one do you think you are? This also leads in to why are some of you more than one personality? I think of Lucy as being a Lucy, but do you think of yourself as Lucy or Roberta? In real life or when you meet the public? Is it confusing?

    1. Good question Margo, and yes, it will be available for replay!

  14. Hope to make it to the chat tonight. If we still have power because we are expecting a storm.

    One or two questions:

Did you all meet in person before you formed Jungle Red Writers?

If you all met in person, then how did you meet? This is a delightful group and it is always a joy to read your posts every morning.

      Your question is excellent!

    1. The great thing about scheduling the live chat on the 17th of each month is that it will be on different days, Deana. We hope that will give everyone the chance to join us sooner or later.
