I Admit It: I Clicked.

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN; Are you susceptible to click bait? How you bought things on Facebook and Instagram?

I know I shouldn’t do it, I am well aware, but there are some topics that when the Internet presents them, I cannot resist! For instance, recent topics clicked:

How long can a opened box of chicken broth last in the refrigerator?

What is the best way to store cucumbers?

An easy way to make high protein cauliflower cheese snacks!

Paul Simon reveals who he was talking about in the song The Boxer.

Princess Diana’s hairstyles throughout the years.

The top ten things women wear that make them look older.

These are not made up. I have clicked on these. (Would you?)

If you want to know any of the answers, just let me know in the comments.

(And I’ll put some more click bait answers on the Reds and Readers facebook page–where we’ll have a Saturday giveaway!)

I have also clicked on the emails I get from a certain department store. The headline would say: “We picked this outfit just for you!”

And I think:  "Awww, you did?  How wonderful, let me see! "

(Of course “they” didn’t. There’s not even a they.)

And I click on it, and it is something so NOT me that I can’t even believe it.  Like this.

(Sorry, Designer, and I'm sure some younger person will adore this, but um, not me.)

And then, if I click to get a closer look, of course, then I have clicked, and they start sending me emails that say “OH! that dress you loved is now on sale!”

When I never loved it in the first place. I only clicked on it because I had to see it close up to believe it.

And once I actually bought an item, a stretchy jersey thing, like a headband but that you put around your wrist. It had a zipper pouch. And it was supposed to hold a phone. But… It didn’t. It was completely useless and worthless. And could not be returned. (Grrr. Anyone want a…stretchy wrist thing?)

I know someone gets money, somehow, when you click. But I will admit that I do not understand it.

Are you susceptible to those things online? (How about Cat videos? Come on, you watch cat videos.)

Come on, Reds and Readers.  What did you click on? What did you really need to know?

What is the clickbait that drives you mad?

And have you ever bought anything?

Let us know--so we can beware! Or... join in.  :-)

And we'll see you on the Reds and Readers page for a giveaway.

P.S.
Hmm. This seems like a good time to ask.  Are you going to the Facebook page?
Did you come HERE first, or go there first?
Did you attend our first-ever Happy Hour?

  1. Yes, I do go to the Facebook page, but I usually come to this blog first. And, yes, I attended the first-ever Happy Hour [and it was so wonderful . . . thank you!]

Even though I know that someone, somewhere, gets paid for them, I can resist most of those click things . . . unless they are books . . . so I'm not tempted to buy [and I’d pass on that dress, too]. But I am a sucker for clicking on those "see what we're making" recipe things . . . .

  2. Just yesterday, I clicked on an article that listed the 10 funniest TV episodes of all time. Sorry, not even close.

I bought an air pump after seeing an ad on Facebook. Recently. So far, so good, but I hope it turns out to really be good because my father and brother have them now, too.

I am not tempted to click on click bait sites. As a former software engineer I am too aware of the potential viruses that can be embedded and infect your computer or phone. In my current profession, I practice Intellectual Property Law, so I stay away from FB, so I don’t see more work related issues. My husband shows me the cat videos from his iPhone.
I concentrate on reading during my free time.

I use Duck Duck Go as my search engine, which eliminates tracking cookie ads. There are several types of software available to limit personalized adds as well. I routinely clear all cookies, they are unnecessary. Though since I only allow functional cookies they are minimal,
I look at the blog, on the internet web page. I only look at FB to read Heather Cox Richardson. I may occasionally look at posts from your private group.

  4. HANK: Oh, I agree that red dress is SOOO not for you!

Thankfully, I use NordVPN when I browse on the Internet so I don't get many supposedly customized ads. NordVPN includes real-time web protection from malware, trackers, ads & protects against malicious downloads.

But it's still annoying that I get further recommendations for hotels after a preliminary search for Vancouver BC hotels I needed for my upcoming trips to Seattle & Singapore. Some internet cookies must still get through to the travel booking sites.

    3. ROBERTA: I am soooo looking forward to eating the amazing food at the Singapore Hawker Centres. Not a fan of oppressive heat & humidity in April/May but Singapore looks like an amazing (and safe) city to explore on my own for a week before going to Malaysia. Heading back to Canada via Vancouver (foodie rest stop for a few days/recovering from jet lag) before finally flying back to Ottawa in mid May.

    4. Grace, my niece is getting married in Amsterdam in June. We will not be attending the wedding, but thought we would like to know about the city, the venue, the recommended hotels - you understand, nosy parker stuff. That was last November. I still get hotel ads from them at least once a day. And they are the flippy ones - that keep flashing. I think I must be pre-epileptic, and those things really drive me nuts.

    5. That's so annoying. I am staying in Vancouver on 4 different dates in April & May, so I was comparing hotel prices, not booking anything last night. I still have to book the Vancouver hotels since the flights were bought in December, but I don't need a daily reminder about hotel deals I missed!

I have been there several times & will just spend part of Wednesday/Thursday visiting MoPOP, Chuhily & Glass + Pike Place Market on my own. The Left Coast Crime conference out in Bellevue. 9. HANK: Awww, thanks. Although I have done several 15-18 hour travels within North America during the past 2 years, I'm still psyching myself up for the long haul Vancouver-Singapore direct flight which is 16.5 hours long. I upgraded to premium economy for that leg of the trip. Better seat. better meals.

  5. My weakness is travel deals. I will click and I can find better deals myself but it takes times but it's worth it and hey I'm retired, I've got plenty of time. I hate the emails I get that are for the little pills for men. Doesn't it know that Paula is a female name and I couldn't possibly have that problem.

  6. I resist clicking on links. If I see something of interest, I'll check to see if it is on Amazon. I go here first and then the FB page. Bummed that I missed the first happy hour - my excuse was being sick.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I go to the Facebook site, but I come here first. Sadly, I couldn't come to the happy hour because of the time difference, and I opt out of the give aways, again because of being in Portugal, but I enjoy both sites and get good ideas and good reads from each.

As for click bait: I seldom click. Even when Amazon advises me that based on previous purchases, here's a book I may like, I note the title (it's in the email) and then delete, simply because who has time to take every suggestion? As for cute kittens, I clicked once, and they weren't that cute. I do like "The Dodo," though. They have cute stories about pets and wildlife. And the only recipes I click on are when I've requested a subject, and even then, whenever possible I "reject all" cookies. Sometimes I accept, but only because I really want that recipe. :-) Clothes, make-up, any item promising to make me look younger - nope. I worked hard for my wrinkles. :-)

  8. This week when we were talking about twins and I mentioned I'd fallen down a rabbit hole about septuplets? Yes, reader, I clicked it on FB. Where I am also prone to pictures about the youngest in the British royal family.

I once clicked and bought a pair of what looked like super comfortable winter hiking boots. BAD fit, couldn't return. Same for a dress that looked perfect. Somebody's notion of my size was a mile wide and of cheap fabric. Couldn't be returned.

I read the blog first thing every morning. I've been dropping by the group, but there are too many fan messages to stay long. I DID go to happy hour but couldn't get there until after eight, so I watched the recording. Next month.

  9. I definitely go to the R&R FB page. Love it. I always visit the blog first thing, before FB. I couldn't attend the first-ever HH due to the time difference; 7pm EST is 6pm my time and that is smack in the middle of supper hour here. C'est la vie. Another time for sure.

As for clickbait: Just say NO. To all of it. I cannot bear having ads stalk me if I click on the bait. I sit on my hands and Do. Not. Click.

  11. JRW first, then Facebook. And of course I made it to the inaugural R&R chat. It was a near thing, though, because we were supposed to go out that evening, but our plans changed.

I've had to turn off the browser "suggestions" on my phone and elsewhere because it is ALL clickbait. Ten ways to make your home look "rich" (hunh?). Five hairstyles for women over 50. 55 things no woman over 50 should have in her home. Playing on insecurities. The "reels" function on Facebook is also mostly just nonsense. I keep turning it off, but Facebook is impervious to my demands, apparently. Pinterest is also a place to get sucked into clickbait, alas.

The only cat videos I have watched are the ones where the cats are scared by cucumbers. It's a thing, no, really. And guaranteed to make you laugh hysterically.

    1. Reels - I'm a sucker for toddler reels. Love them. Toddlers (or babies) dancing or singing or laughing.

    2. And once you've watched one the algorithms show you endless numbers of them!

I also meant to add that my sister has been buying stuff from Temu online. Their prices are insanely cheap, but almost nothing she's bought will withstand a single washing machine session. Be forewarned, my friends.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, I usually avoid clicking on the reels or videos since I don't want the algorithms to send me future ones. One of the few times I do watch them is when one of the Reds puts an embedded video in their post.

  13. Sorry, guys, I'm not a Facebook person. I quit most of social media around 2016 and didn't look back. I realize I'm lucky that I don't need it for work, networking, etc. I've lost track from some old friends, but I figure if we can't stay in touch without social media, how close are we really? (shrug) I'm in the minority though, and I wish you every success over there!

I'm susceptible to clicking on YouTube videos on all sorts of subjects just from a headline. Art (This iconic painting destroyed her life. Here's why). History (why did Henry the VIII really divorce Ann of Cleeves?). I could go on and on. Stuff about linguistics, history, and improving my Italian. Quirky music covers and stuff about music theory. Can I read music or play an instrument? No, I cannot, but it's interesting. Of course, lots of things about writing. And many things with cleaning, organizing, decluttering and goal-setting in the title ;-)

I do try and avoid stuff that is too angry or a teardown of someone (why I hated this book. movie, etc), but some YouTubers do things like point out consumer fraud (from cheap online places like Shein) or debunk urban legends and cultural myths. Those are interesting too.

  17. I have fallen for click bait more times than I care to admit. Less now that I recognize it for what it is. The ones that get me are when they show half a photo and the half I want to see is hidden, so I click on the photo to see the whole thing...and get taken to a click bait site where I never do get to see the photo. Then I feel like an idiot for getting sucked in.

I've bought a few (VERY few) pieces of clothing from those places. Usually they're cheaply made, although I do wear a couple of blouses that turned out pretty cute.

  18. We have a social media site called NextDoor Neighbor. It is nationwide but each "neighborhood" has it's own group and is closed to people who don't live it the "hood". It is very helpful - you can post about your lost pet, complain about a neighbor who throws their doggie poop bags in your trashcan, or get recommendations for restaurants in the area, local school or community meetings. It's actually very helpful.

  19. I avoid click-bait. I don’t like cats so I don’t do cat videos or any other animal videos. I thoroughly enjoyed your first happy hour. 21. I usually come to JRW first but sometimes I start on our Facebook site. I too, don't want to spend all day reading fan posts but have been drawn into some discussions, especially if initiated by a Red.

I don't make any contributions nor purchase anything from Facebook ads. Sometimes, I'll scope something out from a company I know, like Nordstrom, then close it and go to look for the item directly on their website. I will definitely click on an author post for his/her books and audiobooks if they interest me. Then research them separately and I never buy directly through an ad on Facebook.

Facebook is intrusive. It has recently shown me photos of my grandson in my phone and suggested I post them as my "story." How dare they? I posted photos of the bear family in my back yard about 18 months ago and I see bear videos from all over the US and Canada. I do watch videos of Lucy and Jenn's pets (OMG, have you seen Henry?) I watch any and all videos by Fidelco Guide Dog because GSD puppies. If I follow a non profit and come across their posts, I will click to read their info and sometimes info shared by friends. But I try to be careful.

I get emails from Sally's Baking Addiction and from Epicurious and always click on recipes on those emails.

Yes, I attended the first Reds Live and I love seeing everyone all together.

  23. First things first – the Blog to read, but it comes after I check on my Facebook page which may contain some Red & Readers things, but mostly foolishness which I don’t know how it finds me. Harrumper says if you scroll down the FB page and slow down the scroll, it thinks you are interested and then sends you frequent ‘Properties in Kent County’ or some such thing. The Blog comes after the weather, check out the SPCA, Mystery writers recipes, and then I pause and enjoy. I may or may not go to the FBpage, as it seems to be too much me-too, or other drivel for my short attention span.
As for click-bait – well we don’t buy much, I have no patience for you-tube videos, but am a sucker for recipes. I tend to have sites/type of recipes that I like, and check out the recipe of the day.
About cookies – I don’t understand them. I must have a cookie-jar full of them as I don’t know how to get rid of them, and if I delete them, can I still easily get into the banking site? I try and avoid sites that insist on them being added, and will try to read through their screening to prevent me seeing it, if I can, and otherwise decide on whether it is worth the effort.
What really does annoy me, is if you Google something, and the first and predominant thing that comes up is a site that you have to pay for – newspapers are the worst. Argghhhh…

  30. I'd managed to resist clickbait until the pandemic, when most of us were hunkered down and the main source of entertainment (other than reading) was staring at our screens. The holidays were coming, and ads for a "Fairy Light" tree were all over Facebook. The images looked so cheery—a bit of light in the darkness. I ordered one and put it on a shelf. Its sparkly little lights lifted the room, so I ordered more for friends and family. From young nieces to older folks, everybody loved them. Since then, it's been harder to resist the urge to click, but I'm still holding strong.

Alas, I missed the first happy hour!

I do admit to clicking on things I know are "click bait" but I can't seem to help myself. I don't click to "learn" things because they seldom tell me something I need to know. I suppose you could say I click for the entertainment value - what wacky things will they tell us next?

  32. I sometimes allow myself to read clickbait articles. I will dump out of them in a heartbeat if they read like they were written by AI, but where I will occasionally get caught is when there was a specific story teased and I keep reading and reading to try to get to that specific story to see its end. I never ever buy from a Facebook ad. They send me enough supposedly targeted advertising already!

I still visit this blog every day that I am able to sit down at my computer early in the day. I rarely proactively seek out the R&R Facebook site, but apparently the algorithm has gleaned that I do care about it, as I often get fed posts from it in my feed. I know it is still very new, and honestly I'm still kind of sorting out my feelings about it. I often wished we had a better way to "like" someone else's comment on the site, or engage more easily in dialogue. But now I'm finding the Facebook feed a little overwhelming. Since my interest in Jungle Reds was never really about giveaways anyway, I may end up pushing the FB group to the back burner. But I haven't decided that yet.

  33. Beginning the morning with reading too fast. I thought you said: a stretchy jersey thing, like a "husband" but that you put around your wrist. With that red dress a person could most likely wrap a husband anywhere. / Seriously had to go back to a morning sip of coffee.
I am a sucker for 10 things to not order in a steak house, Best 10 (whatevers in Florida) and so on. I have even joined Episcopal Cats with problems. My reading routine is JRW's First and R&R later in the day. Very sorry I missed the premier Happy Hour. I am now at the age where I must write things down to remember. I didn't. Next time for sure. Happy Saturday all.

    1. Coralee, too funny. You could probably wrap two husbands in that dress, maybe more.
I put post it notes all over to remind me to tune in to the group chat.

    2. Episcopal cats? I’m not sure I have ever seen those two words in juxtaposition like that :-)

  34. LOL - I've clicked on many of those, too! Cat videos, check, cucumbers in the fridge, check, chicken broth in the fridge, check, Princess Diana hair styles, check, cat marshmallow beds, check and purchased (FYI, they still love them). You get the picture. I have more or less given up clicking though, there's too much scary stuff out there, and I'm not good a figuring out who is a force of good and who is a force of evil!

  35. I bought from Facebook once. Scam. Luckily paid by PayPal and got my money back. Now if I see something I go to their supposed official
Site or check it out on Amazon. I do love dog videos and recently obsessed with parrots. Can they really be that smart and witty?

  36. always check this blog Before going over to Facebook. Not a fan of FB right now. They have clickbaits all over Facebook and as much as I try to avoid clickbait, somehow I accidentally clicked on an ad on FB and my computer went crazy. I honestly thought I had a virus on my computer and had to bring it to the Genius bar. Luckily, my computer is OK, though now I am wary of FB at the moment.

Few sites do ask if I accept cookies and I always reject cookies. I am still learning about technology every day.

The comments are funny. And Yes, I would like to see the answers to the questions in the post.

    1. Yes, it can be a minefield! (One reason we started a private group...). And the best way to store cucumbers in the fridge is: NOT in an airtight container ! And an open paper carton of chicken broth lasts about three days. (I think..longer, but that's what the post said.) :-) And now we know!

  37. I am a very lucky person because I don't have to do any clicking. My sister sends me everything she thinks is funny, interesting, or entertaining on FB, and I agree with her 80% of the time.

  38. From Celia: JRW first thing, R&R Fb, sometime during the day usually. I am a little overwhelmed by all the comments so am commenting very little right now. And I did watch Happy hour but after it was over so bad me, I'll make a note for 17/7. As for the dreaded clickbait - I am VERY strict with myself, no CB, not on Fb or anywhere else. I do have an Insta a/c but don't really use it as I never found out how to post there. Because I know Fb's wicked ways anything that really, really interests me I open in my Safari browser. I guess it's a small price to pay keeping CB out to a great extent by not using Chrome, but the CB in every article I read, NYT, Guardian, other blogs I'm interested in. I will say that I do read Katie Couric and follow her links. The reporting isn't great but her lists for gifts have been most helpful when choosing for the Grandboys etc. I also keep all notifications off on my phone other than calls and texts so I am not being bombarded by Fb all the time and somehow we all survive. Hank your list of CB is great but not for me. Luckily there's very little to wear that would interest me though they do love sending me bra CB and I am very careful not to click having finally, finally found a brand that works. I do look at some vids on Fb but not cute pets unless it's elephants. But I watch some UK show bits, love Graham Norton and Chef Jacques and any classical music or ballet cuts. In fact I watched Rudolph N dancing the other night with Merle Park in the Nutcracker. It was so good that I played it again on our TV so Victor could watch too. Such talent. I watch stuff on YouTube but do not subscribe. In fact my viewing life is all about not paying if possible. Oh, and lastly, that dress Hank, I think it's for a contortionist.

  39. The stuff that appeals to me are the ads on my Instagram feed. I try not to click on them, because I don't want ads for, say, felted cat cocoons following me all over the internet. But I have say, whether it's a difference between the 'gram and ads elsewhere, or it's just my algorithm, they are so much more appealing than what I see elsewhere, which tends to a lot of "singles near you" and "this magic drink shrinks belly fat!"

  40. I read the blog first, before going to the Facebook page. I have only ever clicked on ads by mistake. A couple of times the product looked like something I could use. I didn’t want to order those items via Facebook so I switched over to Amazon. From reading the reviews I got the clear impression that these items were poor quality, so I didn’t bother ordering them!

  41. Was sorry to see you are doing more on Facebook. I don't go on Facebook as it messes with my mental health (don't know why). I always read the blog first thing in the morning. Click bait? I have purchased a few things and wonder if I will really get the product & if it will be as advertised. So far no misses but I usually research a bit further.

  42. The blog is part of my morning ritual. Late to work? Sorry, I was engrossed in reading. :-) Facebook is the evening, or weekend afternoons. 7pm eastern Happy Hour on a weekday is 4pm in California. Great for Rhys and Jenn but I'm still in the office. SIGH :-( I can attend if you have Happy Hours on weekends :-)

Yes, I too have clicked. In emails, it is to get off the list. Somehow I got added to a huge political list and I've been inundated with "see how, what or did you?" The shopping ones are irritating but survivable. Now if only I had time to delete the hundreds I've ignored. They are overflowing my In Box.

  43. We have some sort of blocker thingy on FB so that we don't see ads, so not tempted there. I do get them on Insta (oh my gosh, Julia, I got nothing but the felted cat cocoons for a while, but why?) but if I see something that very occasionally tempts me (a green cardigan sweater with white sheep--maybe I should get for St. Patrick's so I'll have something green?) I will go to the company's website, not click through on the app. I do get sucked into looking at things on YouTube though, and while it does't tempt me to buy things, I can spend way to much time looking at dance videos, or interviews with the cast of Suits:-)

Hank, the dress! Almost as fetching as the maternity dress on the Emmy's!

  45. I read this blog before anything else because I am on the West Coast and want at least one person to read my sage advice or witticism! ;-) I was in attendance for the premiere R&R Happy Hour and have February and March marked on my calendar. I love having the Reds respond to something on the R&R Facebook page, but skim through a lot of the fan postings. And yes, I, too, hate clickbait, but have fallen prey more times than I want to admit to the kind that show you a picture of something or a headline that draws me in but is NEVER addressed in the article. Aarrgh! I think I have answered all of the questions! Have a wonderful weekend, Reddies! — Pat S

  46. I check the Reds blog, then Facebook, then email. I am guilty of clicking on all sorts of stuff. It's a rabbit hole kind of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I should add that I have a friend who obsessively keeps up with all the "what you shouldn't wear" stuff and passes it on to me, so I don't need to click on those links:-)

  48. I always check the blog first thing when I get on my laptop for the day. Then I'll go to FB and at some point wind up at Reds and Readers. I did attend the first Happy Hour, and I was glad to be doing something bookish again and with my wonderful Reds and commenters I've been with for years. Now if I can remember the 17th of every month.

I'm a clicker. The five best items to have in your wardrobe, click. The perfect compression socks, click. Are bananas the perfect fruit, click. Oh, and the click I can't resist anymore are the series of about five video clips that show up a lot on my FB page. Many are about lions and bears and other wild animals I love. I'm not a cat person, so I don't watch cat videos, but I do watch dog videos, especially the Starbox Dachshunds, Moonpie and Buttercup. What is scary to me is when I'm thinking of looking something up (haven't typed in anything about it yet), and all of a sudden there's a click bait about it.

  49. I'm a sucker for clickbait. Cat videos...hello! Worst plastic surgery on celebs? I'm in. Lifestyle hacks? Yes, please. I had no idea how you could take the stem off a strawberry by using a straw. Brilliant. This is why i have to shut down the Internet when writing. Too distracting. :)

  50. I check my email first as I get a daily report from USPS on the contents of my mailbox. This is a free service and ensures that if something important is mailed to you that you actually receive it. As far as clickbait is concerned, I recently bought some Santa sweaters from Combustiou via a facebook link on December 8th. I waited and waited. I threatened them with a fraud report to my credit card company if I did not have the merchandise by January 15th. Suddenly, I began to receive daily status reports on the progress of the shipping. The package arrived finally on January 18th. I previously ordered from TEMU and that stuff arrived right away even though some folks thought that it might be a fraud. I am more careful now, though!
What entertains me on facebook are the ""Reels and Short Video" links especially (1) a Mexican female comedian married to a Puerto Rican Christian Rapper; (2) clips from an old British TV show were a male celebrity interviews children who say the strangest things especially as he prods them to answer questions about their parents; (3) interesting recipe demonstrations; (4) charcuterie boards; (5) easy exercise routines! AND yes, every time that I visit a website to look at anything, then both facebook and my email are bombarded with advertisements or reminders that I still have not purchased something that I looked at!
