Book pairings: Jungle Red gift ideas

HALLIE EPHRON: One of the most fun events I did for my book launch was book talk paired with a wine, chocolate, and cheese tasting, hosted by Adventures by the Book in San Diego. They do such a great job pairing experiences with books--just for instance, coming up next fall they have a New England Foliage Adventures (Oct 12-20), a four-state journey featuring New England authors.

Their approach got me thinking about how pairing a book with a food, an experience, or another book makes a great gift.

So as we all look toward the Christmas shopping season, we Reds are here to help you with some creative gift giving, pairing our books with…

I’d recommend pairing CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR with a copy of Marie Kondo’s THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF TIDYING UP, and a bottle of Prosecco (just don't drink too much).
DEBORAH CROMBIE: I’d recommend pairing A BITTER FEAST with a bottle of Cotswold Dry Gin (or best substitute available,) a cheese board with artisan British cheeses, and a book on Cotswold Secret Gardens. A plane ticket would be nice, too, for those very special friends!

LUCY BURDETTE: If the person you’re gifting is going to make it to Key West this winter, a perfect gift would be A DEADLY FEAST, plus tickets to the Key West seafood and walking tour that’s featured in the book. Or you could meet the real chef Martha Hubbard at one of her tasting events: http://www.islecookkeywest.com/schedule-of-events.htm

If all else fails, a key lime pie goes with any of the books!
JENN McKINLAY: Well, for the romantics in your life, you could give a copy of THE CHRISTMAS KEEPER with an ugly Christmas sweater, it’s a thing in the book. Or for the mystery lover, a copy of WORD TO THE WISE with a nice charcuterie board or some roses, although they might send a mixed message, so be careful with that.
HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: Ooh, a copy of THE MURDER LIST feels like it might come with a bit of baggage. So I’d make it fun, and include a gorgeous indulgent notebook--ostensibly for keeping track of the books your recipient reads, or maybe journaling, but maybe for a list of something else….   And a beautiful pen, or a box of those wonderful Blackwing #2 pencils.
RHYS BOWEN: I’m not sure what I could pair with LOVE AND DEATH AMONG THE CHEETAHS, my most recent book. Certainly not a book on how to host a wife-swapping party! Or a bag of cocaine. Or even a pair of tickets to a safari.
So I think I’ll stick with the safer THE VICTORY GARDEN, my stand-alone from earlier this year. It’s about a garden in Devonshire, herbs, healing, so I think I could pair it with a book on the uses of herbs, plus a jar of Devon clotted cream to have with scones and jam. And I’d throw in a copy of my THE TWELVE CLUES OF CHRISTMAS to make it festive, as that is all about celebrating Christmas in Devonshire.

HALLIE: So wishing everyone a happy Saturday-after-Thanksgiving and JUST THREE WEEKENDS BEFORFE CHRISTMAS!

Holiday Madness by Jenn McKinlay

JENN McKINLAY: When I saw the release date for my new romantic comedy THE CHRISTMAS KEEPER,  I winced. Okay, I also cursed -- just a little. As a lover of all things Halloween - my favorite holiday - it physically pained me to have a Christmas book out on OCTOBER 29th. It felt like my publisher was saying, "Yes, we want you to promote your  Christmas book, while gnawing a turkey leg, dressed in your Halloween costume." Ugh.

It's holiday madness, I say!

"McKinlay (The Good Ones 2019) once again serves up her signature literary cocktail of sassy humor and sexy romance expertly spiked with a surfeit of small town charm and holiday cheer." --Booklist (starred review)

But today is Nov 5th and the book has been out for a week. Let's hope it did well. I did promote it online and such, but I just couldn't make myself post about it here before Halloween. It's like wearing white shoes after Labor Day - no, no, no. Yes, I know that's old school but I'm from Connecticut and my people are rather inflexible about these things. Plus, white shoes scuff easily and they make your feet look big, just sayin'.

So, happy book birthday - plus one week - to me! The Christmas Keeper is my first book set at holiday time and I pillaged my personal life and took all of the  things I enjoy about the holidays, including movies, baked goods, ice skating, and ugly Christmas sweaters and poured them into the book. Yes, my fam enjoys the odd competitive ugly Christmas sweater competition. It's great fun, plus there's a cash prize.

Spolier: The nephew and his gal with the exploding
reindeer won (she made their sweaters!).

Another subplot in The Christmas Keeper taken from my own life is orphaned elephant adoption. Where did that come from you ask?

Well, a few birthdays ago, Hub asked me what I wanted. I said an elephant, because of course I did. Hub and I live a fairly modest life and we've reached an age where we don't need  things as much as we want to make a difference in the world. Thus, Hub and the Hooligans went forth and adopted three elephants for me from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust -- Esampu, Shukuru, and Maktao. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a gift so much as I get to watch them growing up online -- Maktao is a total scamp!

Naturally, when it came time to write The Christmas Keeper, I knew I was going to incorporate ugly Christmas sweaters and orphaned elephant rescue as plot points, significant ones, but how? Well, if I tell you, it will give it away! You'll just have to read it to find out!

As you can see, real life impacts my fiction in many ways, big and small. What about you, Reds? How much of your plot lines come from real life? And, Readers, what story lines have influenced your lives in significant ways?

True love and holiday cheer combine for an unforgettable romance in this second Happily Ever After novel featuring a North Carolina bookstore from the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Ones.

All he wants for Christmas…
The second Joaquin Solis saw Savannah Wilson, he knew she was destined to be his wife. Unfortunately, Savannah’s sights are set on a happily-ever-after of another kind: skewering the boss who got her fired. Until then, she won’t act on the scorching sexual chemistry that is brewing between them, leaving Joaquin scrambling to find a way to capture her heart.

When the opportunity arises to use his ranch to boost Savannah's publicity career, Joaquin doesn’t hesitate to invite her into his world at Shadow Pines and woo her with all of his Christmas loving mojo. It’s a gamble since the holidays aren’t really Savannah's thing and helping her might also mean losing her as she plans to shake the dust off of their quaint town in North Carolina and head back to New York City the first chance she gets.

But Joaquin believes in the magic of Christmas and he knows with a little help from his friends at the Happily Ever After Bookstore, he can convince the woman of his dreams that he’s a keeper…

What We're Writing - Jenn McKinlay

JENN McKINLAY: I am heinously, woefully, shockingly behind on writing PUMPKIN SPICE PERIL (April 2020, hopefully, click the title to pre-order), the 12th cupcake bakery mystery. I have seriously never been this late on a book in my life. Probably it's because I got a wild hair and decided to pen a women's fiction book, PARIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA (July 2020), in the very small gap of time available between writing BURIED TO THE BRIM (Jan 2020 - on sale right now for $6.57, click the title to pre-order) and this cupcake mystery. But what can an author do?

When the muse yells, she yells LOUD! There was no other choice but to get the Paris book written.

Then, of course, the universe likes to pants you when you least expect it, and I came down with a couple of annoying health things that slowed me up as well. So here I am, trying my best to get PUMPKIN done, doing copyedits on BURIED, revisions of PARIS, researching ONE FOR THE BOOKS (Nov 2020), the next library mystery which is due Nov 1st, while promoting WORD TO THE WISE (Sept 3, 2019) and THE CHRISTMAS KEEPER (Oct 28, 2019). Click the picture captions to pre-order!

Oct 2019

Pardon me a second while I go breathe into a paper bag. . . Okay, there, all better! Everything will get done. I'm not worried. Not a bit. Not at all. Everything is fine. Totally, fine!
So who wants an early looksee at the very, very rough opening chapter of PUMPKIN SPICE PERIL? If you're in, here it is:

Chapter One

“Hi, how can I help you?” Angie Harper asked the customer across the bakery counter. She had her lips pulled back in what should have been a smile but looked like a grimace instead.
Melanie Cooper glanced at her partner. Angie sounded weird as if she was forcing herself to be friendly when what she really wanted to do was reach across the counter and rip the person’s head off. Judging by the wary gaze of the customer, they weren’t buying the show of teeth either.
“You okay there, Ange?” Mel asked.
“Yes, of course, why wouldn’t I be?” Angie frowned.
Mel raised her hands in the air. “Just getting a vibe, an unhappy vibe, and I’m happy to step in if you need a sec.”
“Why would I need a sec? I’m fine, totally fine!” Angie insisted.
“Then why are you yelling?” Mel asked.
     “This isn’t yelling!”
“Not for nothing, but over on this side of the counter it sounds like yelling,” the customer, a thirty-something man in khaki slacks and a festive Hawaiian shirt, said.
“I’m so sorry,” Angie said. It would have worked except, she said it in an exaggerated voice that made it clear she wasn’t sorry at all.
The customer glanced from her to Mel. “Maybe you can help me. I’d like some red velvet cupcakes, please.”
“Oh, sure, get someone else to help you,” Angie said. “Because I’m incompetent, is that it? Is that what you’re trying to say?”
The man pursed his lips and raised his eyebrows. He was obviously a smart guy, realizing there was no winning here.
“He might not say it, but I will.” A woman spoke up from the back of the line of people. She had gray hair, twisted into a topknot and she wore a chef’s coat in a bright shade of blue. Olivia Puckett.
“Oh, crud,” Mel said. Owner of a rival bakery, but also dating Marty Zelaznik, one of Mel’s employees, Olivia was the last person Angie needed to tussle with right now as the two women rubbed together about as well as static and hair. “Olivia, don’t poke the bear.”
Angie’s head swiveled in Mel’s direction. “Did you just call me a bear?”
“Um…well…affectionately,” Mel explained. “You know, like a teddy bear.”
“Or like a ginormous grizzly bear,” Angie said. “You think I’m fat!”
“Oh, my god.” Mel pressed the heels of her hands against her forehead as if it would keep her head from exploding. “You’re not fat. Honestly, what is going on with you today?”
“She looks hormonal to me,” Hawaiian shirt guy said.
“Ah!” Angie sucked in a breath. “I. Am. Not. Hormonal.”
“Nah, he nailed it,” Olivia chimed in.
Angie whipped around with a glower. “You hush.”
     “Angie!” Mel hissed.
Olivia laughed and nudged the customer with her elbow. “If you want cupcakes without the drama, you can hit my bakery Confections. It’s just down the street.”
“Thanks, but I’m already here and I’ve got my eye on the red velvets,” he said. “I can wait out the pregger rage.”
Angie blinked. “What did you say?”
The man turned to look at her. “Pregger rage, you know, the unreasonable fury that comes with being pregnant. My wife was exactly like that when she was expecting our kids. We have four so I’ve been to this rodeo before.”
“But I’m not…” Angie’s voice trailed off. Her eyes went wide and then she clapped a handover her mouth and ran back into the kitchen.
“Vomiting,” the man called after her. “That’s another symptom.”
Mel glanced from him to the swinging door, behind which came the unmistakable sound of someone retching. As if they’d been shot out of a cannon, Mel’s two bakery workers, Marty Zelaznik and Oz Ruiz, blasted out of the kitchen.
“Don’t go back there!” Marty said. “It’s bad.”
     “Really bad!” Oz confirmed.
Mel stared at the door. Was Angie really pregnant? She and her husband Tate had been trying for months. Did it finally take? She needed to call Tate for backup, but she didn’t want to blow it if it wasn’t true or if Angie wasn’t ready to tell him. Dilemma!

So, is she or isn't she? Tune in next April to find out!
And here's a sneak peek at the cover which just arrived in my inbox!
APRIL 2020

Now, how about you, Reds and Readers, have you ever had the muse yell so loudly that she upset your timetable and you created something you never anticipated?

What We're Writing: Jenn and the dreaded copyedits.

JENN McKINLAY: I'm plugging away, cranking out ten pages a day on a brand new venture that I'm enjoying immensely  It's been sold and I'm quite thrilled by the enthusiasm of the publisher, but while the contracts are still being drawn up, I can't say anything about it as yet. Bummer, I know.

In the meantime, because writing four books per year is a juggling act, I'm also doing the dreaded copyedits for October's book, The Christmas Keeper. It's a rom-com that features cranky horses, romance writing divas, and ugly Christmas sweaters. What's not to love, right?

A popular phrase in publishing these days is "meet cute", which describes how a heroine and hero meet. This is not the case with these two characters: Joaquin (Quino) Solis and Savannah (Savy) Wilson. In fact, I believe "meet snark" would be more apt, which could be why I love them so. Here's the scene from the perspective of Joaquin's friend Ryder:

Savannah charged into the office, carrying two mugs of coffee. She saw Joaquin standing there but didn’t slow down. She just plowed past him into the room. Ryder caught Quino’s look of surprise and almost laughed.
“Here you go,” Savannah said. She thrust the mug at Ryder. Then she scowled at him. “What did you say to Maisy?”
“Nothing, why?” He took the mug and tried to ignore how his pulse jumped at the sound of her name.
“Liar,” Savannah said. “She’s with her kitten right now and she’s—,”
    “Crying?” Ryder asked in alarm.
“Singing.” Savannah gave him a dark look.
Oh, singing was bad, very bad, for a variety of reasons. “Over the Rainbow?”
“Worse, Tura Lura Lural,” she said.
“The Irish lullaby?” Quino asked. “What’s wrong with that?”
Savannah and Ryder shared a look and then Savy said, “I’m sorry, this is your business why?”
“Because Ryder is my friend,” he said.
“Well, Maisy is mine,” she countered.
Ryder glanced between them. If ever there were two people who should not be in the same room together, it was these two. Both were fiercely independent, stubborn, and frankly, mouthy.
“Here’s a thought, if you don’t want me knowing your friend’s business, maybe you shouldn’t talk about it in front of me,” Quino said. He crossed his arms over his chest, doing a fair imitation of a wall.
“If you had any manners, you wouldn’t have listened in on what was obviously a private conversation,” Savy said. She ended it with a hair toss and Ryder saw his friend’s pupils dilate. Quino had always had a thing for gingers.
“Steady, you two,” Ryder said. “We’re all friends here.” He cast a glance at Savy. “At least, I hope we are. Joaquin Solis, this is Savannah Wilson. There you’ve been introduced, now play nice.”
Quino’s eyes moved over Savannah’s tall, curvy frame. She was dressed for success today in a skirt and blouse with spiky heels. Her long red curls were loose and framed her face becomingly while her green eyes blazed provocatively. Ryder would have felt sorry for his friend if he wasn’t all consumed by his own female based misery right now.
“You’re a city girl, aren’t you?” Quino asked.
“Woman. I am a woman, not a girl,” Savannah said. “And, yes, I’m from Manhattan, or as we like to call it, civilization.”
A slow smile spread across Quino’s lips. Ruh roh. Ryder knew that look. It practically shouted “challenge accepted”.
“Well, woman, since we’ve established that I lack manners, I’m going to say exactly what I’m thinking,” he said.
“That should be a short sentence,” she retorted.
This time Quino laughed and it hit the room like a sonic boom of warmth. Ryder noticed that even Savannah responded to it by relaxing her posture a bit. She turned to face him and Quino moved forward until they were an arm’s length apart.
“I think you should go on a date with me,” he said. Tall and muscular, with movie star good looks and a friendly personality, it had long been established that Quino could have any woman he wanted. In fact, in all the years Ryder had known him no woman had ever refused a date with him.
“That is never going to happen,” Savannah said. “But thanks for the offer.”
Ryder was pretty sure his jaw hit the ground. He tried to cover it up by taking a long sip of coffee, but seriously -- Holy Shit! – no one ever said no to Joaquin SolisHe thought his friend might be embarrassed to have crashed and burned in front of him.
Nope. Quite the opposite. Quino looked at him as if to say Her. I’ll take her. Ryder had the abrupt epiphany that his world had just gotten infinitely more complicated. This had to be nipped. Immediately!
