GETTING MY DUCKS IN A ROW by VM Burns

LUCY BURDETTE: Today I'm happy to bring back a friend from Mystery Lovers Kitchen, VM (Valerie) Burns. If you love comfort food with a southern twist, visit her on alternate Thursdays on our cozy foodie blog. But enough about food--today she's talking about big life changes, and how they made their way into her new book. Welcome Valerie!

VM BURNS: A year ago, I realized it was time. Time to make a change. Time to take a leap of faith. Time to quit the soul sucking day job and write fulltime. It was time I got my ducks in a row.

Ever since I came out of the closet and announced to the world that “I AM A WRITER.” I’ve met hundreds, maybe thousands, of people who all want to write. I never knew there were so many people who shared my dream. Sadly, most people never get beyond the dream stage. Some start writing, but never finish. Others finish a book, but are quelled by the cold realities of traditional publishing. It’s HARD. Even for those of us who are fortunate enough to land an agent and a traditional publishing deal, getting to the stage where you can support yourself as a writer, is almost impossible.

Why is writing fulltime such a challenge? The primary reason is that traditional publishing doesn’t provide a steady, regular income. The day job paid me every two weeks. Most traditional publishers pay royalties twice per year. And royalties are based on sales made six months in arrears. There are also things like taxes, insurance, and intellectual property that I needed to figure out. Thinking about all the things that I needed to do was overwhelming. I read books. I attended seminars. And I talked to people who were doing it. Ultimately, I came up with a plan (and a backup plan) which enabled me to take the leap. Giving up the safety of a regular paycheck along with health insurance felt like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. It was scary. But, it has also been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Getting off the corporate ladder isn’t for everybody. And for anyone who’s stuck in a soul sucking day job, I recommend doing your research before making that leap. Getting your ducks in a row may involve consultations with doctors, lawyers, accountants, financial planners, and therapists. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. And sometimes, you may need to make small baby steps rather than giant leaps. As Samantha Washington says, “Life is too short, not to be happy.”

My journey to corral my ducks was the inspiration for the 11th book in my Mystery Bookshop Mystery series, Murder From A to Z. Whatever your goal is for organizing your ducks, don’t be afraid to put in the research and come up with a plan (or three). After all is said and done, you may ultimately decide NOT to jump out of that airplane, but at least you’ll have neat orderly ducks.

Most people think of making big life changes at the start of a new year like diets, exercise, and financial changes. Do you have ducks that you want to organize in 2026?

ABOUT THE BOOK: Nana Jo has volunteered her lawyer granddaughter, Jenna, to teach estate planning to retirees—with Sam providing her bookshop as the venue. But during the seminar, entitled Getting Your Ducks in Order, it quickly becomes clear someone’s up to Fowl Play. When elderly Alva Tarkington, accompanied by her niece, sits down for a consultation, Sam realizes the woman’s frequent blinking is actually Morse Code—S.O.S. The sisters get her alone, and Alva tells them she believes her life is in danger and must change her will . . .

Unfortunately, Alva is found dead the next day—seemingly from natural causes. But Nana Jo and the sisters suspect otherwise. In between penning her latest historical mystery, set in 1939 as England declares war on Germany and Lady Elizabeth Marsh pursues stolen paintings and a traitor, Sam teams up with the senior sleuths of Shady Acres to search for motives—beginning with Alva’s family. They soon learn not everyone is who they say they are, and someone is more than qualified to teach a class on cold-blooded murder . . .

Murder From A to Z releases on January 27th.

My First Love by VM Burns

LUCY BURDETTE: I’m really excited to introduce my pal VM (aka Valerie) Burns to the Jungle Red family today! If you follow Mystery Lovers Kitchen, you will recognize her name. She cooks amazing southern food, and loves dogs, and has been getting all kinds of recognition for her multiple mystery series. You will love her blog today about what got her started in the world of mysteries. Welcome Valerie!

VM BURNS: I can trace my obsession with mysteries back to one author and one book. I grew up three blocks from my branch library and it became my home away from home. My best friend and I visited that small library at least twice every week. It’s there that I discovered my first Agatha Christie, The Murder of Roger Akroyd. That book blew my mind. When I got to the end, I can honestly say, “I didn’t see that coming.” The next day, I rushed back to the library and looked for another book by the same author. My librarian gave me, And, Then There Were None. I read the back cover, and I wasn’t sure this book would be as thrilling. I mean, ten people are on an island and they are each murdered. Obviously, the last one left standing would be the killer, right? Oh well, I had the book and decided to give it a try. HOLY COW! SPOILER ALERT, she kills them all!!! I should have known from the title, “And, Then There Were None,” but that little detail escaped me. Who was this woman with the diabolical mind who had twisted my twelve-year-old brain? The next day I went back to the library and grabbed every Agatha Christie book I could find. Thus, started my love of mysteries and my obsession/fascination with the Queen of Crime Fiction.

Agatha Christie is the bestselling author of sixty-six crime fiction books and 14 short stories. Her play, The Mousetrap, set a record for the longest-running play in London, running from November 25, 1952, until the theatre was closed due to the pandemic on March 16, 2020.

Christie’s style of manor house mysteries featuring nosy old spinsters or finicky Belgian private detectives may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Twenty-first-century readers may struggle not only with her sleuths but also with her prose. However, her plots are IMO brilliant. I re-read these books regularly. Each time, I see a clue or a red herring I missed previously. A Cup of Flour, A Pinch of Death is my twenty-first mystery. They say you never forget your first love, and that’s especially true in my case.

Do you remember the book/author that got you hooked on mysteries?

The Safest Way to Travel During a Global Pandemic by VM Burns

Jenn McKinlay: I am desperate to travel! Like seriously so tired of my zip code - I'm cuckoo banana balls desperate. Luckily, today we have VM Burns in the house to help all of us who suffer the travel itch we can not scratch. Take it away, Valerie.

VM Burns: Publishing is slow…very slow. Books that are destined for bookstore and library shelves have to be submitted to the publisher months, sometimes over a year in advance. Little did I know when I first sat down to write, A Tourist’s Guide to Murder, the 6th book in my Mystery Bookshop mystery series, that the world would be in the middle of a global pandemic when the book released. Who could have foreseen that? Nevertheless, I’m going to call it fate, that thing that led me to write about traveling to England. During a time when travel is halted and most people are sheltering in place, many of us need a vacation, an escape.

Genre fiction (eg. mystery, romance, science fiction and fantasy), was long ago labeled “escapist fiction.” That label wasn’t intended as a compliment. In fact, on the fiction hierarchy, literary fiction is at the top of the scale. Whereas genre fiction (sometimes referred to as commercial or popular fiction), falls slightly above bathroom graffiti. Apparently, escaping from reality isn’t considered a good thing in the circles of fiction’s upper echelon. Yet, after all that’s happened in the past year, I can’t think of anything I’d like to do more than escape.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have made a couple of trips to England in the past, but there’s never enough time to see everything. I’ve been talking about making a return trip for at least six years. However, I’ve yet to make it past the shores of the United States. My dreams of visiting the birthplace of Agatha Christie and the home where she escaped for a well-deserved rest after finishing a book started long before international borders were closed and traveling became a life-or-death gamble due to COVID-19. After a decade of working from home and sheltering in place (okay, eleven months but it feels longer), I’m ready for an excursion. Traveling abroad and escaping on a tour is all I can think about. There’s something about being told that you can’t do something that makes you really want to do it. But, alas traveling isn’t safe at the moment. However, thanks to the Internet (and a pressing book deadline), I managed to travel across the British countryside all from the safety of home and you can too.

Readers familiar with the Mystery Bookshop Mystery Series know that Samantha Washington and her late husband, Leon, dreamed of one day quitting their jobs to pursue their shared dream of owning a bookshop that specialized in mysteries. After Leon’s death, Sam did it. She quit her job and bought the building they’d fantasized about owning, and opened Market Street Mysteries. However, owning a mystery bookshop was only one of Sam’s dreams. She also dreamed of writing British historic cozy mysteries. With a lot of help from her family and friends, Sam managed to fulfill both of those dreams. And, in A Tourist’s Guide to Murder, she’s heading to England to research her next mystery.

In researching this book, I followed a real mystery lover’s tour with only minor deviations. I traveled to London and then across Devon and Dartmoor, through the Cotswolds and Oxford, and all the way to Agatha Christie’s home in Torquay. I followed locations where the women murdered by London’s infamous serial killer, Jack the Ripper, were found. as well as locations that inspired fictional tales from mystery writers like Dick Francis, Dorothy Sayers, P.D. James, and of course, the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie. Thanks to the Internet, pictures, video tours, rereading my favorite Agatha Christie novels and intensive television reconnaissance (that’s what I’m calling it, don’t judge) by watching Miss Marple, Midsomer Murders, and Lord Peter Wimsey, I was able to immerse myself into the mystery lovers’ tour nearly as much as Sam, Nana Jo, and ‘the girls’ (Dorothy, Ruby Mae, and Irma) from the retirement village.

If you’re as tired of sheltering in place as I am, then pick up a book and make your escape. If you’re up for a puzzle, consider a mystery. Follow the clues, sift through the red herrings and make your escape. With luck, you’ll be able to explore the world and figure out whodunit without leaving the comfort of home.

Reds and Readers, what mysteries in other locations are you reading to escape?
Also, if you could pick one place to research mysteries in Great Britain, where would it be?
