For the Love of Fall and Fudge by Nancy Coco

JENN McKINLAY: As soon as I saw this book cover pop up, I knew I had to have it! It has all of my fave things - fall, pumpkins, a dog, and FUDGE in the title! Seriously, what is not to love? And today the author, the wonderful Nancy Coco, is here to tell us more about it!

Available Sept 24th!

NANCY COCO: Hi, thanks Jenn, for inviting me to guest blog and introduce my new release Fudge Bites.

Fudge Bites is the 7 th book in the Candy-coated Mystery series set on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Mackinaw Island is in the Straits of Mackinac on the northern most tip of the mitten. (You can always tell a person from Michigan because they make a mitten with their hand to point out what part of the state they are from.) This island is known for the fact that motor vehicles are banned and the shops produce the world’s best fudge. In fact, Mackinac Island is the fudge capital of the world!

What a fun place to set a book series! Mackinac Island is made up of state parks for hiking and biking and Main Street is lined with shops where they sell everything from tee shirts to high-end jewelry to fudge. You can take a carriage ride around the island or rent a bicycle and tour the eight-mile trail that surrounds the island.
Fudge Bites takes place in October when the tourist season is officially over, but the island is in full celebration with a Walking Red zombie walk for the American Heart Association.

Our heroine, Allie McMurray, fudge shop owner and hotelier, has a pet cat and a pet dog who keep getting her mixed up in murder. This time Allie follows her calico cat’s bloody paw prints to a zombie in the alley behind her fudge shop. Unfortunately, this zombie isn’t going to be coming back from the dead. Now it’s up to Allie to figure out who murdered Maggs Vanderbilt’s son before the killer strikes again.

I love Autumn. It’s my favorite time of year from the smell of fallen leaves, to the gorgeous colors of the trees, hay rack rides, caramel apples and all things spooky with Halloween. It was great fun to write a book where the leaves are turning and there is a nip in the air. The book is filled with quirky characters and recipes for all things fudgy.

I’m giving away a copy on today’s blog. Simply leave a comment about your favorite part of Fall. All comments will be put in a hat and the winner randomly drawn. Best of luck!

All right, Reds and Readers, what's your favorite part of autumn? And are you a fudge lover, if so what flavor?

You can find Fudge Bites at your favorite online and most brick and mortar book stores.

  1. Congratulations on your new book, Nancy . . . “Fudge Bites” sounds like delicious fun!

Do I like fudge? Sure do . . . chocolate, of course.
My favorite part of autumn? Well, I like that it’s cool enough for sweaters, but not winter cold yet and I love seeing the changing color of the leaves . . . autumn trees look like artists’ palettes.

  2. Congratulations on your new novel, Nancy...I love fudge too and this story sounds perfect for Halloween. My favorite kind of fudge is very sweet. I have quite a sweet tooth. Among the things I love about the autumn besides the sound of leaves crunching when I walk are the pumpkin spice in my coffee, candy corn, and costumes.

Were you at Malice Domestic in 2016?

And I have your Kensington Palace Chef mystery novel. I am so glad I kept it!

  6. Mackinac is such a fun place. Do they actually have a Walking Red Zombies walk there?

My oldest daughter lives in Birmingham, MI, and they have a second home "up north", near the northern tip of Torch Lake. We usually spend time with them up there, but have not been there all this year. It's been a long time since we've gone to the Island, and now I'm thinking it's time.

I love fudge, but my favorite is the old-fashioned kind made from sugar and cocoa on the stove, then poured over a refrigerated, buttered dish. The Michigan type is very different from that.

  7. Nancy, now that I think about it, I may have read one of the books in this series--a cozy set on Mackinac Island sounds awfully familiar! Looks like I have some catching up to do.... and yes to fall and yes to fudge! Fall for those crisp sunny days, but there's always a tinge of melancholy to fall days--end of summer/winter's coming kind of thing for me. But then comes Halloween and Thanksgiving! As for fudge, my favorite is dark chocolate and raspberry or dark chocolate and coconut, or dark chocolate peanut butter or.....

  8. Congratulations on your new release! I love fall: the brilliant leaves, mums, and asters, crisp air, sapphire blue skies, migrating birds, fresh apple cider.

However, in Cincinnati temps are still pushing 90, with humidity to match. And drought conditions. The trees are giving up and dropping their browned leaves.

  9. Shalom Reds and fans. I’ve always liked September and autumn. I think it originally had to do with the start of the academic year. I was not one to make New Year’s resolutions in January but I always loved the blank pages of my notebooks and the inspiration to make resolutions for the coming school year.

I also love the Jewish holidays of this time of year. From September to December there are 30 days of holidays. From Rosh HaShanah to Yom Kippur there are 10 days of awe. On the heels of this is Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchas Torah for another ten days. And then, closing out the fall is Chanukah. My birthday on the Jewish calendar falls on the first night of this festival of dedication.

I love the changing colors of the season. I love Maurice Chevalier’s rendition of September Song and Frank Sinatra’s somewhat bittersweet rendering of It Was a Very Good Year. And perhaps on top of it all, I love my friend Cookie Pete’s fudge. Butter scotch.

    1. What a wonderful stretch of holidays! And happy early birthday! Being an extrovert, I’ve always loved the start of school - seeing old friends and making new ones. The academics? Not so much. Butterscotch fudge? Oh, dear, this is going to be in my brain all day.

    2. Hi! Happy early birthday and thanks for the idea of butterscotch fudge- now I'm going to have to make it!! I love Fall holidays and the smell of new school books- :)

  10. I love Fall, and the Jewish Holidays, both serious and festive, certainly add to that. I too, make my New Year resolutions at this time. But I must confess that Halloween, which is my birthday, is one of the most fun days of the year for me. My father used to decorate the whole house for my birthday with decorations that he kept year after year. My grandmother would come in from NYC and bake my birthday cakes and my cousins would come over for a party. They are among my sweetest memories of childhood. Nancy, the books sound delightful. I'd love to visit that part of Michigan some day, and it sounds like autumn is a great time to be there. As for fudge, definitely chocolate.

  11. What's not to love about Fall? If I am lucky I don't have to mow (grass) or shovel (snow). And mud should not be a problem. Usually good waking weather with cool or even cold nights for good sleeping. Apples!

  12. If you get on the interstate when you leave the island and drive all the way to the end of I-65, I live a mile or two away. Needless to say, what I love most about Fall is if it actually lasts for more than a day or two! Air that is cool enough to turn off the AC and open the windows, wear long sleeves and use a blanket at night.

  16. "Fudge Bites" sounds like great fun - thanks for sharing, Nancy. Fall right now in New England is a traditional Indian Summer. (Is it ok to use that phrase these days??) Mid 80's and we desperately need a bit of rain. Near Boston the leaves are just starting to turn so we don't know yet if it's going to be a brilliant foliage year or just so-so... which in any other part of the world would be pretty amazing.

Ah fudge. When I was growing up in Los Angeles, a special treat was a trip to "The Farmer's Market" where one of the stands sold fudge. A gazillion years later, it's still there. Littlejohn's. Whenever I get a chance to go back I buy a pound of their plain fudge fudge. It sets the standard.

  17. When I lived in Colorado, I loved autumn -- driving around and looking at all of the changing leaves and enjoying the crisp, clean air. Now that I'm back in Texas, I'm really missing it (the weather here is still in the upper 90's and muggy). My family visited Mackinac Island when I was very young, and I remember the fun carriage ride. My favorite kind of fudge is salted caramel - yum! Thanks for visiting Jungle Reds and congratulations on your book release ~

  19. Congratulations on the new book, Nancy. It sounds delicious! I love fudge, but I'm a purist. I like plain old chocolate fudge although--okay, salted caramel is a fine substitute, if you insist . . .

And I love Fall! When I lived in Missouri, I loved the knock-your-eyes-out colors of the fall leaves, and the brisk wind. The cooler temperatures made it necessary for me to haul out all my favorite sweaters and scarves, and the cloudy skies brought fog and rain, which were nice antidotes to the summer swelter.

Here in Texas, I have mixed feelings. Fall is great because it finally, eventually, please God soon breaks the back of the summer heat. But Fall also brings the State Fair of Texas, so that's a month of being trapped inside corny dog hell, surrounded by people who don't know where they're driving but still manage to take up all the convenient parking places. Not to mention all the prep before and the tear-down afterwards, followed by several months of flat tires as I pick up all the nails, screws, and bolts the fair people left behind. My company offices out of Fair Park, and I'll admit that the Fair is fun if you only visit it once or twice. If you are forced to live there every working day for a month, its attraction palls.

And Fall in Texas is not much. Spring is the season here, with vast swaths of wildflowers along the roadside and the occasional excitement of a tornado warning. But Fall? No leaf color, no sweaters, and really limited coat/jacket options in the stores. But I do get to ride the historic Fair Park carousel--hand-carved Dentzel horses and chariots, and it's closed up except for during the State Fair. So, good points and bad points. Mostly I'm just glad it's not summer anymore.

    1. Hi Gigi, I just moved to Texas - and it is sweltering! lol- is there Fall? Wow on the State Fair I can understand why you get tired of it. How do you survive the smell of the funnel cakes? I think I would gain 20 pounds just smelling that all day-

      Delete
    2. Hi Nancy! Where are you in Texas? Gigi and are both in the north Dallas area. And obviously, we are still sweltering. At least it's a little cooler this last week, but so humid we could be in south Florida! But no rain!

      Delete
    3. Funnel cakes? I confess I can barely smell all the deep fat and sugar out there on the Midway over the Birds of the World show. We share our building with the birds, and the delightful bird people. It's really cool to see all the hawks and eagles and cranes and storks up close, and hear the trumpeter hornbills--oh, the stories I could tell! But even with regular cleaning it can start to smell like a rookery in the midday sun. Deep fried cheese curds and funnel cakes don't stand a chance.

  20. I had a fabulous time on Macinac, staying at the Grand Hotel. It was magic. And the fudge... I brought home a large box. But I'm not a big fan of fall. I like sunshine and summer, which is why I escape to Arizona when Calufornia gets too cold and dark

  21. We'll still be having a few days of heat in Northern California (Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, it's supposed to be over 90!), but the mornings have definitely been cooler. I typically get up around 7:00 to feed my cat and to enter sweepstakes on my computer (one of my long-time hobbies). During the summer, I'd then exercise to avoid the heat of the day, shower, have breakfast, and so on. But since it's been cooler, I hop back in bed after being on the computer, pull up the covers, and blissfully read before I move on to exercise. It's my favorite time of the day.

  27. Nancy, your cover is absolutely adorable. I've never been to Mackinac Island but it sounds wonderful. Actually, any place with actual fall sounds wonderful to me about now. We do get it here in north Texas, but it's running a bit late. I can't wait for the nighttime temps to drop into the sixties, for the first crisp north breeze and the smell of wood smoke. Yes, the leaves will all turn messily brown and fall off, but right now that seems an okay trade off for a little cooler weather.

As for the fudge, I'm not a huge fan, but I think I could deal with a bit of plain old-fashioned chocolate if someone twisted my arm!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nancy, that cover is fall perfection! The fall items and the colors make it irresistible. And, the story sounds irresistible, too. Zombies and fall and fudge. Love it. A friend of my daughter's owns and operates a fudge shop called Three Chicks Fudgery, and there's nothing quite as good as fudge from a fudge shop. Your setting is somewhere I would love to visit, but I just haven't been able to get to Mackinac Island yet. So, pardon the pun, but it seems you have all the ingredients for a great mystery book.

It's hard to pick a favorite part of fall, as I love all of it so much. I'm going to go with the color change of the leaves, as I am just mesmerized by the beauty of it.

I think my favorite part of fall has always been the smell in the air --kind of appley/winey, with a slight undercurrent of decay. Though the sound of crunchy leaves under my feet when taking a brisk fall hike is pretty special, too. I have always thought it was a cruel irony that fall is so beautiful and so short, when it ushers in the interminable WINTER here in the Midwest.

  37. Mackinac Island Fudge used to come the fair every year, here in Sonoma County. It was always the last stop before we went home. Since I'm allergic to walnuts we would get one half pound block of chocolate with nuts and one plain chocolate without. I haven't been to the fair for a couple of years but last time I went there was a different vendor selling fudge, it just wouldn't have been the same so we went without that year.

Our local apples are done in August so I am more of a pumpkins, gourds and hard squash person in the Fall. I have a recipe for stuffed pumpkin. It takes some time to create it but it's fun to pull out for a crowd every once in awhile.

I've been told that we really don't have Fall around here mainly because our deciduous trees don't get the snap of cold to cause the rapid color change plus we don't have a lot of those nice maples. We do have a unique scent. When it's Fall the crush is on. You can smell freshly squeezed grapes just starting to ferment all along the valleys and unique back roads and more rural highways. That scent says Fall for me.

Then they had to find the right blood. ...The transfusion ended around three and a half hours ago, and new blood work was done about forty five minutes ago. Still haven’t heard if the transfusion worked. For someone who has only ever had orthopedic issues, this has been eye opening! It’s a good test of my patience, too!!! I used to live in the bay area , Ca and moved to Iowa 18 years ago and I love fall as the leaves turn and the best road trip it to drive to Wi or Il and look at all the trees and all the colors they are. Also My granddaughter is to be born in beg of Oct then her sisters b-day will be right after then my son their dad is end of Nov sometimes on Turkey Day. Even though they live in Ca I get the call when their mom goes into labor then they leave me on the phone so I can be in the room although I am thousands of miles away. Also I love all the fall flowers that are out and the excitement of the cards that we send to 17 kids when it is Halloween. I also love fall as I have a disease that I have been fighting for 30 plus years and since the weather is cooler so is the pain less although i fight it as it is all throughout the body including badly cripppled fingers . Then the best thing is that the farmers are done with all their fertilizing and the fall smells come thru and it is wonderful as we live at the top of the hill by ourselves with farms in the distance! 54. The cooler temperatures are always welcome. Leafs changing colors and harvesting of apples are two more of things I always look forward to. My mother always made chocolate marshmallow fudge with walnuts at Christmas time. Everyone who was gifted some of it were very pleased to be the recipient of it. robeader53(at)yahoo(dot)com

  55. My favorite part of Fall is the cooler weather and how that changes all the colors of the leaves! Plus all the holiday get-togethers! I’m afraid I don’t like Fudge at all. I think it’s too sweet for me. It makes my teeth hurt, lol!

  57. Michiganders always know when someone isn’t from MI when they spell Mackinac Island Mackinaw. 😄 I’m just joking with you though. I couldn’t resist.

I love the fall colors, bonfires, comfy clothes and football. 😁 I love fudge, any kind but peanut butter is my absolute favorite. The fudge stores on Mackinac have the best. I’m going over there this weekend and I’ll have to stock up on some.
