Your Sunday Moment of Zen —Nurse Cat Xander MacNeal

SUSAN ELIA MACNEAL: Well, here it is, your Sunday moment of Zen.

I've been under the weather all week, but faithfully tended to by nurse-cat Xander (named for Buffy the Vampire Slayer's devoted sidekick, Xander Harris).

This is Xander with younger sister Lola. She adores him. He tolerates her. Barely.

Xander's a stray cat we adopted in 2003. Even as a younger cat, he had a grumpy old-man sort of personality. Over the years, he's become even grumpier. If he could shake his fist and yell at the kids to get off the lawn, he would.

I used to say he was like Lou Grant in a tiny fur suit.

Now I say he's like Ron Swanson (from Parks and Recreation) in a tiny fur suit.

The thing about Xander is that he knows when any of us is sick — and then he'll come and cuddle and purr and let you hold him like a teddy bear. (I'm sure he rolls his eyes, but still.) He's even let me warm my cold feet up under him without protest. He's THE BEST.

Anyway, thank you Reds and lovely readers for a great week — and now I'm going back to bed!

  1. I hope you're feeling much better, Susan . . . .
I love that wise, all-knowing look on Xander's face . . . it sounds as if he, like most kitties, is certain that he's in charge of things.
It's a good thing that cats occasionally deign to take care of us.

  3. Xander, probably MUCH better than Dr. Sam at taking care of you! Heck, Xander can probably write better than Dr. Sam's clients! Get well soon, Susan!

  7. Lou Grant in a tiny fur suit is an image that will forever live in my mind (Oh, how I loved Lou Grant!).

I love that Xander is taking such good care of you. What would we do, really, without our furry loved ones???

    Feel better soonest!!!

  8. Jennifer Grey is the winner? As in the star of Dirty Dancing Jennifer Grey? No one puts baby in the corner? No?

  11. Aww, feel better, Susan!

I love the little dude. He always makes me happy when I come to visit. Even if there is a room full of people, he finds me. I guess he knows another grump when he sees one and hopes that sitting with me will mean he has someone to shake their fist for him. :P

  12. Feel better, Susan!! I love Xander (both Buffy's Xander and your cat.) We had a nurse dog, Taffy, our cocker spaniel. He always knew if you were sick or upset, and would come and lie right against you with his head on your leg or stomach. Such a comfort to be looked after by a canine or feline companion...

  14. Jane and George give me that kind of loving care when I'm down or sick. Seem to understand what I need. But please get better so that you can go back to removing him from your keyboard, or whatever his habit is to stop you from working!

  15. Aw, what a sweetheart Xander is, in spite of his grumpiness. He and his sister are certainly beautiful kitties. I'm imagining Xander shaking his fist at me now saying, "I'm not a stinking kitty, I'm a cat." Hope you get some good rest today, Susan, and feel better.

  17. I know, Susan, I was HOPING it was that Jennifer Grey. I really had a moment of hoping. That would have been so funny!

But it's probably another Jennifer Gray, who has lived her whole life with this..xooxo
