YOUR WEATHER REPORT!

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: We had a big fun conversational blog planned for today, but we will do it tomorrow, because we are worrying about you!

How are you all in the weather? Hoping you are all safe and cozy, and that the power is on. Let us know, okay?

It's the Jungle Red check in! Where are you? How are you? Tell us everything.

I'm in Boston, where it is supposed to be incredibly blustery, more than blustery, and "widespread power outages."

Ahhhh...there are few scarier phrases. I have saved my manuscript on every device imaginable, and trying to look at the (flashlight-powered) bright side. It COULD be peaceful for say, half an hour? But not long enough for the fridge and freezer to have situations.

(Do you have any power outage advice?)

We are lucky not to be travelling, or having anyone coming here --what a funny thing to say!--but airports are so crazed. Is this interfering with your or your loved ones' travel?

Here's a photo a NYC pal just sent me from where he is. (And oh, I cannot help but notice his battery is low. Yikes.)

And as I write this, it is pouring and there's thunder.

So let's get to YOU quickly--how are you, and where, Reds and readers? Give us your bombognenesis bomb cyclone blizzardy stormy Winter Storm Elliott (this storm is very patrician) weather reports!

(And stay safe, darling ones!)

  1. We are not expecting any snow, but we are getting strong and steady rain right now in southern New Jersey. The temperature drop is supposed to be significant, bringing wind chill numbers below zero. [I'm staying inside.] We've charged all the devices just in case, but I think it's the cold and the wind that will be the most problematic for us . . . .

Hope everyone is safe, warm, and dry . . . .

  3. We started with light snow last night and had 8 hours of freezing rain & ice pellets overnight. It's now raining but we're expecting a flash freeze as temperature plummet this afternoon, and then more snow tonight and tomorrow + high winds. Not nice at all in Ottawa.

    3. HANK: Fortunately, there are no group walks on Fridays. We have walked in blizzards and freezing cold temperatures throughout the winter but will NOT walk when it's freezing rain/ice pellets. Doing my daily steps indoors today (and probably tomorrow).

  4. Good morning from blustery West Hartford, Connecticut. It poured all night, but I didn't hear thunder. The wind was whistling through my attic at 4 a.m. and that was the end of my sleep. Soon I'll have coffee and that will really make it morning. It is supposed to reach 55 - 60 degrees today before it drops below freezing. They are warning about icy roads. We are staying put this weekend. I am going to read now. 📚

  5. Our home does not have a central heating unit. We are prepared. We have survival gear left over from the hurricane season. Our heating source when it drops below a certain temperature is a warm cat. They cuddle close to us, a fair heat exchange. We layer clothing, have small space heaters; essentially hunker down. Today I am donating worn sheets to the Center so the plants will be protected. I send my warmth from the Nome St Clowder to all of you. May you be well, may the plumbing not freeze, may the light find you at peace.

  6. Up here on the MA/NH line, it's rainy and disturbingly windy. We still have power, and everything that can be charged, is. But we have neither a generator or a backup battery for our solar panels, so the fridge/freezer/heat/charging situation gets pretty grim after 24 hours of no power. One of these years...

That said, National Grid has been busy trimming trees and putting in new, taller poles around her this fall. Fingers crossed.

We're also not going anywhere or seeing anyone, either. Hugh has COVID. He's doing much better. I so far am negative and feeling fine, and we're masking around each other and eating and sleeping separately. But it was hugely disappointing to cancel the four-day Christmas visit from my son and his wife.

I hope everybody stays safe and dry and warm!

    5. Thank you, Hank - we're good for food and drink and everything. Hugh is starting to feel better, and I had a solid negative test this morning. We still have power, which is GREAT. We'll have a postponed Christmas with the kids once Hugh is cleared to unmask.

I'm not going anywhere, safer at home, but I visited Anthony's produce before the snow, and neighbors have asked if they can bring over some of their Christmas feast . . . yes! Of course, I also have plenty of books, e- and tree-books. <3

  7. I'm currently sitting in the sun with my daughter and husband, in balmy Nairobi, and tomorrow we fly to the safari camp for Christmas. Temps there could be in the high 90s, since it's summer in this part of the world. But back in Cincinnati the temperature has dropped from the 40s to sub zero single digits. We hear the frozen rain made the roads untreatable, and now six inches of snow is predicted. Also, 55 mph winds.

Two of our neighbors are on standby if the power goes out, but when I designed the house I purposely planned for all water piping to run on inside walls, so the pipes won't freeze. We'll see how well this theory works.

  12. Plattsburgh, NY on the west shore of Lake Champlain, just south of the Canadian border. Heavy rain and thunder. Flash freeze forecast as the temp plummets later. Maybe snow tonight or tomorrow.

Postponed Christmas with the kids because today is the only day they both have off. They both work Christmas day -- TSA officers.

Today might have been OK, but my daughter travels from Burlington, VT. The ferries run all winter. They even keep a path open through ice when the lake freezes. But they will close for high winds and we are forecast to have 50+ mph.
Woodstove for heat and plenty of firewood. We feel so very lucky. Especially thinking of others here and those in Ukraine without heat or power.

  14. Cincinnati: a sparkling -7 this morning with 2-4 inches of drifting snow. We have power. I opened all the lower cabinet doors yesterday to expose the pipes, and dripped the kitchen and laundry room faucets over night. I have kids in Nashville and DC planning to travel today, though waiting till tomorrow would be a safer decision.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It is almost pleasant here but I know that will soon change. The temp is rising but not enough, I fear to melt the foot plus of snow from last week. Lost power then for 5 hours and I'm preparing if it happens again. Bucket of water on standby for flushing. Last summer I treated myself to a floor lamp that can be powered by batteries of plug in. Gives very bright light and isn't too heavy so I can move it where I need it. Sure came in handy last week.

I'm worried about the flash freeze after the rain. I have a long steep driveway that I'm afraid will become more bobsled run than anything else. I might not be going anywhere for quite some time. I probably could get down the driveway, one way or another, but I'd never get back up so I better stay put and sit tight. (No liquor in the house so even that will be hard!)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ha ha--I never thought about "sit tight" that way! ANd yes, treacherous driveways. We have one, too. But one careful step at a time..but NOT on the driveway. Inside is good, and wait for the sun!

  20. Northern Ohio checking in. Temps are -3F w/wind chill of -30F, winds steady. 4-8 inches of snow expected with more to come later today. Level 3 road emergency county-wide--sheriff says all non-emergency, non-essential traffic to stay off the roads. So far, electric is holding but furnace is kaput. House is holding at 67F with the aid of electric heaters--praying the electric doesn't go out because of the wind! But inside critters are okay and garage cats have straw shelters, food, and water. Christmas plans are all up in the air, depending on mother nature.

  21. I'm in Florida, it's sunny and warm. Even so, we all went through devastating Hurricane Ian a little while ago, (I wasn't down here then, but it was grim as you all know). So, I think Florida deserves a quiet, peaceful, Christmas and New Year. Toronto is expecting a heavy snowfall shortly, so it will be a White Christmas, for them. I sort of miss it, as my family is there (and it's my little grandson's first Christmas.) :-). A very happy holiday season to you all and a wonderful, peaceful, 2023. :-) Joyce W.

  22. I'm 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, PA, where it's a VERY blustery 2 degrees. I can't see outside very well because our windows are all frosted over, but I can HEAR the wind howling and the house creaking. Our power went out at 5:15 this morning but was restored around 8:00 at which point I did some joyful happy dancing. However, we're keeping the portable propane heater in the living room in case the power goes out again. Stay safe, everyone!

  23. I'm in Portland Oregon, where we are in winter. Wednesday night the temperature dropped and the east wind started howling. I struggled out to the ridge yesterday am because the sunrise was gorgeous, but it was very difficult to walk against the wind. I made it to the grocery store, but had to hold onto a lamp post to keep from being blown into the street. Last night the blowing ice pellets started and turned into freezing rain. Right now it's 21 degrees, and the wind isn't quite as strong, but still blowing from the east. Freezing rain is very dangerous, both for people in cars and people on foot. I probably won't leave my house today. I remember my first New Year's Eve at 9-1-1. We had an ice storm going and I was assigned to medical call taking. I took call after call of people falling on the ice and breaking their arm or ankle. No thanks.

My house is always cold when the east wind blows, so I am in long underwear, hat, and gloves, and enjoying many cups of tea. An electric space heater tries to help the aging radiators. I really hope the power stays on!

The forecast is for a high of 32 today and for warming to occur overnight tonight after the wind shifts to the west. It's supposed to be 41 and rainy tomorrow. We'll see. These forecasts for warming have often been wrong. I do hope they are right because I am looking forward to getting together with family and to Christmas Eve services.

My best to all the JRW and readers! We'll get through it.

My heat pump is performing like a champ, though, and if the power goes out the wood stove will do its best to keep us going. 28. Here in Columbus Ohio the temperature is -8. We got 2 or 3 inches of snow overnight and I think that is the end of the snow for us. But from about 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. the wind was just howling. I have no idea how strong those gusts were. It is still windy, at about 25 miles per hour. But our area seems to have come through the worst of it with no power outages, for which I am profoundly grateful. Today is my birthday, and it is going to be a cozy one here at home.

My 29-year-old son lives in the country about an hour due east of me, and he had to be at work (about a 10 mile drive on country roads) at 5 a.m. I had been profoundly worried about him making that drive during what was predicted to be the worst of the storm. Thankfully he made it without incident, and as I look at weather reports it appears his area got even less snow than we did. So I am very grateful.

  31. Here in the armpit of Massachusetts, it is a dark and stormy day. Well, not so much stormy right now. But we have off and on light rain and big gusts of wind. I get out of work at 12:45 and then I have to go do some of my regular weekly errands and pay a bill. Then I'll probably do something fun for myself since it is payday and all my Xmas shopping is already done. It's supposed to be colder than a welldigger's ass tomorrow so that is making me do some stuff today that I would've done tomorrow. I have dinner plans at my sister's tomorrow evening so that might be the only trip out I take tomorrow.

Meanwhile, my cousin and her family went to Germany for Christmas to visit the exchange student they hosted last year. (She is basically a family member for them now). But the trip didn't start off well when their original flight got cancelled, forcing my cousin to scramble to find a new flight that didn't cause them to lose time in their vacation. Projections are for 2-3" of snow then ice, then rain - the ever popular wintery mix - followed by a flash freeze. This storm is the gift that keeps on giving :). Power outages are expected, but we have the woodstoves going now - with one upstairs and one down. We have a gas stove, and a generator and lots and lots of bottled water. I made stew yesterday so we can reheat that on the stove or on the woodstove. Fortunately, we're not expecting anyone this Christmas nor are we traveling. Just staying snug in the house.

Hank, as a former denizen of Florida. We lost power for a week after Irma in tropcial heat. Most of the food in our freezer was still frozen at the end of that time and we lost very little. Now, as most of the rest of you are, we are concerned about power outages. And, I'm sick. Chest and head congestion and wonky throat. I'll be taking a Covid test today to check that out. 44. Shalom Reds and readers –
David from Doylestown PA. It’s cold and windy. It was 53F this morning and now it’s 19F with howling wind. After heavy rain this morning, we had about an hour or so of snow. It left a dusting that looks like powdered sugar on the grassy areas. The wind dried up the water, so the sidewalks and roads are not icy. The power is on, and we hope for the best. (We are susceptible to power outages. Usually they are remedied quickly.) It’s forecast to go down to 8F tonight with a high below 20F tomorrow. We have coffee and cigarettes, so there will be no need to go out (except to smoke). Christmas Day is supposed to be sunny with a high of 26F, so provided I test negative tomorrow, I will have Christmas dinner at friends’. I had to miss Thanksgiving with them because I was still testing positive for Covid after two weeks. If the power stays on, I will see friends on Zoom all weekend.

  46. Here in Central Jersey it was 54 last night, now it is 22 and going down to 8 to night. We had rain, then a wicked pretty snow squall, then full sun, then cloudy dark which is what it is now. Town is preparing for icy roads. Weird for sure. Happy Holidays to all.

  47. I’m in northeastern Ohio. We went to bed last night with 40+ degree temps and woke up to negative temps with windchills way below zero. Currently -27. In addition I live in the heart of the snow belt so we are getting a good amount of snow to blow around. Probably three inches with drifts much higher, and it’s still coming down. I lost power for about an hour earlier; I keeping my fingers crossed power stays on overnight!

But all in all, I’ve had a great day making Christmas cookies and treats, reading, and watching holiday movies. 🎄🎅🏼

  48. I'm in the same Boston-area report as others, but on Christmas Day, am planning to fly to Phoenix -- and I'll happily settle for warmer-than-boston-even-if-unseasonably-cool-for-arizona, @Jenn M!

  49. Right now in Tiger, Georgia it is 7 degrees. Wind chill is -10. We had very strong wind overnight and through a good part of the day and it is still gusty. Power out in a lot of the county so I am very grateful that ours has stayed on so far. I am pretty certain that this is the coldest weather I have ever been in.

  50. I'm in Milwaukee, where it's colder than a cheatin' lover's heart, but we got a lot less snow than predicted-- and a lot more wind. I spent the day on the phone with United Health Care for whom I have nothing but evil wishes. We got things about half resolved. I still need to get glasses before the end of the year, and I have one more iron infusion so maybe I'm done with those, too. Except for those things, I'm indoors for the duration, hoping to get my apartment in order so at least one thing will be better in the new year (a gal can dream). Lost another dear friend last weekend to a sudden stroke, reminding me that if I want to get anything done, I'd better just do it. Discovered a couple of years ago that eggnog is much better with Crown Royal (what I had in the house) in it, rather than virgin. So I'll be keeping myself going as I clean with a healthy dose of that! To all of you, I invite you to join me remotely. Cheers!
