What We're Watching, an Update

DEBORAH CROMBIE: Reds and readers, it's time for a little "What We're Watching" chat, because I have to tell you that I am gripped, GRIPPED, by my latest addictive series. Is it zombies, you ask? Or the latest spy thriller? No, it's Jeremy Clarkson's FARM 2! You may think I'm joking, but how can anyone resist these harrowing plot developments. Will the cows test positive for TB? What is to be done about the badgers? (The badgers carry TB that can infect cattle, but are protected from being killed or trapped.) And now the chickens are at risk from avian flu! And the biggest question–will the farm get its restaurant permit, thereby saving not only Diddly Squat but struggling neighboring farms in the glorious Cotswolds?

And now on to those zombies. If you are watching THE LAST OF US, you'll know that it's not really very much about the apocalyptic monsters, it's about the relationship between Joel, who lost his daughter twenty years previously, and thirteen-year-old Ellie, who may carry the cure for the virus, and their journey. We have the quest, we have love, loyalty, and sacrifice, all the things that make epic storytelling. Ellie has the ability to save the world–she is Frodo to Joel's Sam. The performances by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are wonderful, and some of the episodes have been box-of-tissues moving (fellow viewers will know which ones I mean), some incredibly tense, and I have no idea how it will all turn out.

So thumbs up for those two, and now a thumbs down for the first episode of the new season of THE MANDALORIAN. This is Pedro Pascal's year, with starring roles in two big series, but The Mandalorian has taken one of the best faces in film and covered it up again! I thought the whole point of the end of season 2 was that Mando removes his Mandalorian helmet, but apparently there were plot developments in THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT (which we didn't watch) and now the helmet is back on. I say even Baby Yoda doesn't make up for that.

One more thumbs up. I've only watched the first episode of VERA, season 12, but it was a master class in twisty plotting. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series, when I can pull myself away from the Farm.

And I know we are not all on the TED LASSO bandwagon, but for those of us who are (Football is life!), season 3 premieres next week!! We have been rewatching from the beginning and appreciating it even more the second time around. Such terrific writing and character development–how will these storylines play out???

RHYS BOWEN: count me as another Clarkson’s Farm addict. I’m just up to the badgers. Oh no!  And the spin off from DEATH IN PARADISE that takes place in Cornwall. It’s pleasant and harmless and anything with Cornwall is good for me. And you know I’m a tennis fan and Indian Wells starts this week. So I’ll be glued.

HALLIE EPHRON:  I don’t have any of the British streaming channels, so clearly I’m missing a lot. I’m enjoying POKER FACE on Peacock. And I powered through THREE PINES. And love Love LOVED the Korean series, EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WU.I surprised myself by enjoying the Jesse Stone series, based on the Robert B. Parker novels and starring Tom Selleck. And please, don’t tell anyone, but I watch Jeopardy just about every night. Even though I am hopeless with any clue that involves popular culture.

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: Oh, I am so happy you found ATTORNEY WU! I have been talking that up everywhere. SO brilliant, and so touching, and so funny.  And I love POKER FACE, too, she's great ,and it’s very throwback. Also I was fascinated by Dennis Lehane’S BLACKBIRD,  dark and chilling and terrific acting and writing. And Debs, you got me completely hooked on LINE OF DUTY–I watched every single episode! (and there were maybe 6 seasons.)  Is it coming back? But TV offerings feel a little scarce to me right now–I keep wondering what I’m missing. So this is the perfect topic.

JENN McKINLAY: We are all on the same page! I loved The EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO so much I watched it twice. Hub and I have been watching POKER FACE and enjoy it - it has a weird reimagined Columbo vibe. I haven’t started CLARKSON’S FARM 2 but I adored season 1. Hub and I are really looking forward to TED LASSO, and I have to give a big shout out to one of my fave shows this spring SHRINKING with Jason Segel and Harrison Ford – it’s soooo good. There’s one character named Brian whose catchphrase is “everything goes my way” even when it quite clearly doesn’t and it’s just such a shot of positivity amid life’s hardships. Harrison Ford is truly fantastic. Love, love, love it. Also, I’m very much looking forward to the next season of PERRY MASON as season 1 was excellent.

DEBS: Yay, thanks for all the good recommendations! I've watched a few episodes of POKER FACE and ATTORNEY WU, both of which I loved but Rick didn't like as much, so I need to find some me time to watch more. Interestingly, my seven-year-old granddaughter is fascinated by Attorney Wu!

And I've been wondering about SHRINKING and PERRY MASON, so will move those two up the list.

READERS, what else should we not miss?

  1. THE MANDALORIAN is a must-watch favorite here, as is JEOPARDY . . . .

  2. Debs, as you know I'm watching The Last of Us. I don't think it will be a spoiler to say that you and I agree that episode three was one of the most beautiful episode of TV we've ever seen. It completely surprised me. Husband and I watched two more episodes tonight, so we have three more to go. In February I finally watched The White Lotus and loved it, completely captivated me. I started Karen Pirie, but I got sidetracked and will have to get back to it, still on episode one. I'll probably watch it from the beginning again. So, I think that's what's recent for me.

Coming up. I, too, am excited about season three of Ted Lasso. I'm going to try and watch some of the last season again before I start season three. I want to watch Perry Mason and will probably get to it soon. I also want to watch Poker Face. And, now I have to watch Clarkson's Farm.

  3. I've been completely enjoying the rebooted QUANTUM LEAP. The stories have several twists, and they've got an overarching mystery as well that is very intriguing. They promise that will wrap by the end of this season, but I don't see how they can pull that off with only a couple of episodes left.

I wasn't that impressed with the pilot of THE COMPANY WE KEEP, but it has grown on me each week. It's part caper, part forbidden romance, but they don't know how forbidden it is yet. Something is going to completely blow up. I don't see how this can continue. But I am there for it.

I also really enjoyed the pilot of TRUE LIES last week. Yes, it was a pilot, and we knew what ground it had to cover. But I had fun watching it cover that ground, and I'm looking forward to a new episode tomorrow night.

Wow! Three new shows I've started watching this season. I think that's a record for me for the last few years.

    1. I tried watching the new Quantum Leap but just lost interest. Then I watched the episode about the transgender girl on the basketball team episode because of the basketball tie-in. But watching the basketball action sequences being so poorly done pulled me out of the episode each time they showed up. Not one of the actresses looked like they had any clue how to properly pass, dribble or shoot and it was very noticeable on the screen. As a former coach, that bothers the hell out of me. Yes, it wasn't the point of the episode but if you get the little things wrong, it distracts.

  4. I love POKER FACE after I watched the second episode - did not care for the first one. I didn't know TRUE LIES started - want to check out that one.

  6. I'm such a zero that I haven't watched ANY of these. But CALL THE MIDWIFE starts March 19 and I can't wait.

Now in the evenings when I start falling asleep reading, I head over to the laptop and watch a session of Slow Spanish. I repeat it, think about it, and being an adult learner, I also read the transcription and write down words I don't know. I'm determined to improve for the next time I go to Puerto Rico and hang out with my new in-laws.

    1. Edith, I don't know if you have watched "Destinos"? It's a PBS telenovela designed for Spanish language learners. There are 52 episodes of 30 minutes each and we travel with lawyer Raquel Rodriguez all over the Spanish speaking world (including Puerto Rico) as she tries to unravel a mystery for a dying man. There's lots of romance and excitement and the Spanish gets more and more complicated over time. It includes grammar exercises and is all totally free on YouTube. It's old, but I enjoyed going through it a couple of times.

    2. Wow, thanks, Gillian! That sounds perfect. I didn't know about it. Bonus that it's a mystery...

  7. Strike. The adaptation of Robert Galbraith’s novels, is superb and far better than the books which are far too bloated. The lead actors are spectacularly excellent and the stories are winnowed and focused. Similar to Outlander, the limits of television have forced the creators to shed all the rambling and extraneous fluff in the books.

    3. I actually really like the books but I think the TV adaptation is better. Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger are wonderful in the leads and of course I would watch just for London and the other locations! Brenda, the first four seasons are on Hulu Plus and HBO Max, and the new season, Troubled Blood, is on HBO Max. I don't think it's on Hulu yet.

  8. What am I watching? Hmmm...well let's see, I'm watching The Mandalorian. And I'm watching the Star Wars animated series The Bad Batch as well. That's been really good.

I finished Jack Ryan Season 3. I'm still working on Three Pines. I started watching Daisy Jones & The Six on Amazon. It's okay. I didn't read the book but it feels like a fictionalized version of the Fleetwood Mac story. And since I've lived through and read all about the real version, this one keeps my attention but has yet to blow me away.

The Night Court reboot has been only mildly diverting. I like the return of John Larroquette for sure. While Melissa Rauch has her moments, the rest of the cast is straight out bad stock character casting and the writing needs to become MUCH better.

Started watching The Ark on Syfy. I like it but acknowledge the acting and some of the writing could be a lot better. I'm still watching network shows like East New York, Alaska Daily, Fire Country, Blue Bloods, all three NCIS series, The Rookie and others.

I've also been doing rewatch of "classic" series like NYPD Blue, Benson, M*A*S*H*, Designing Women, Superstore and the various Wrestlemania events.

  10. Oh yes lots of TV here too. THE LAST OF US. Fantastic, so much humanity stitched in with the awful horror of it. Strike, wonderful. Both lead actors are fabulous and let's face it, those plots are quirky. I loved PERRY MASON, fantastic to hear about a new season, he's a great actor. Can I call out another British series, UNFORGOTTEN? I won't say anything in case I spoil it but there are about six seasons. A wonderfully complex police procedural with heart. Has anyone seen PENNYWORTH? now, that's a real corker! Beautiful to watch, and again, great acting. And speaking of, MAGPIE MURDERS. So, it's a wonder I get anything done. Or read... Great topic...

  11. I bought Britbox for Irwin for his birthday so we have both sampled series we never had seen before. He watches TV most evenings but I do not watch very often. I read instead.

The producers of Three Pines just butchered it. Expecting Louise Penny, we got Alfred Hitchcock ( not in good way.) Irwin's been watching Longmire from the beginning. It started out pretty good but then fixated on one bad guy theme for a whole season, so, meh. We are reading the books and they are much better.

I would love to see anything with Harrison Ford. We'll see if it is on anything we get. Otherwise, reading and audiobooks are keeping me away from the TV. That is actually pretty good.

Great show though very English. I must read the rest of his books.

  13. Bloodlands, a Northern Ireland police procedural, on Acorn, starting the incomparable James Nesbitt. Also on Acorn, Candice Renoir, a humorous French police show set in Sete on the Mediterranean coast. Candice plays a ditzy blonde, but she's a sharp, perceptive, detective. In understandable French, with subtitles. Candice makes me so happy! 15. We absolutely loved Clarkson’s Farm. Watch for his snide comments when he mentions that they feature all the minority groups – he is so politically incorrect and not always in a good way. Formula 1 (Netflix) is up now – to keep the other fellow happy (I may sleep through it with some wisely made comments just to fool him). Started Karen Pirie, but he huffed and puffed through it (“can‘t understand it”...agree the Scottish dialect is a bit thick), so I will have to watch the rest by myself. I found the plot excellent. Squeaker movie on Netflix – The Phantom of the Open – about a man who does not play golf and the British Open. Quiet and funny. Then of course there is always Vera…we have to space her out, so as to always have something to look forward to! Lunchtime is Q – we started watching at the series when Sandi starts, and are now at ‘Q’. We laugh all the way through it, often spitting out the soup (it is lunchtime). It is wonderful when they get her laughing so hard that she has to take her glasses off – she has lost it! We calm down with a round of yesterday’s taped Jeopardy – Ken Jennings fan for both of us.

  20. Well, ok, everyone loves Attorney Woo. And how could anyone not love it? Very wonderful. Looking forward a lot to Perry Mason - the first season was surprisingly excellent. And missing Creatures Great and Small-such a comforting show. Just discovered Vienna Blood and am fascinated. A very well done old-style ensemble cop show on network tv, East New York. (That's a real section of Brooklyn, I used to work there) And here is a surprise, recommended to me by a relative: older show,Servant of the People on Netflix. From Ukraine. An angry history teacher is accidentally elected president and is determined (shockingly) to do an honest job. Funny, biting, inspiring, sometimes heavy handed, worth watching. As for tv, I loved the 1st season of Clarkson's Farm. One discovery on Netflix: Red Rose. It is horror/mystery and not the kind of thing I'd usually watch, but I got drawn into it. Set in the Midlands (yay for British productions!), with a strong cast of high schoolers, it is a story about the madness of crowds. Made me think of Louise Penny. 25. I really don't watch a whole lot of tv, but I'm here to confess that Debs is a bad influence on me. Or a good influence. I'll leave the value judgements up to the Universe, but I have had a lot of fun hunting up old Strictly Come Dancing videos on YouTube and watching the first two seasons of Ted Lasso, and it's all down to her saying, "Oh, you should watch this!" Next thing you know, she'll have me enjoying Earl Grey tea, which I have always thought of as (to quote Ted Lasso) hot brown water. But a word of warning to anyone who comes to visit her in person: if you go to the bakery with her on a Sunday morning, you will never be satisfied with a plain old croissant again. You will learn to crave the cruffin, which is croissant dough stuffed with pastry cream and raspberry jam, and completely delicious.

  27. I missed adding to this (waaah!) but I wouldn't have been much help, because I'm all over the sae shows Debs is, especially THE LAST OF US which involves Samantha coming over to the house, dinner, playing Mancala and then sitting down in front of the TV. It's been a long time since I've had a watching ritual.

I do have a suggestion, though! AVENUE 5 is a comedy/science fiction (but not very science fictional) half hour show that I am LOVING. I haven't seen anything that's made me laugh so loudly and so frequently in a long time (and I'm, regretfully, including THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART II in this assessment.) Season 2 is out and on HBO, which makes it a perfect apertif after your done sobbing at the end of the latest episode of THE LAST OF US. "It's okay, baby girl, I got you." SO MANY TEARS.

I try to read the blog in the morning, but on days when I have an appointment, don’t get to it until afternoon which is dinner time for you East Coasters. (I savor this blog with everyone’s responses so, even though sometimes I am still up when it’s posted, I like to read what everyone has to say.)
As to television, we are really into the British shows since we got Acorn and BritBox. We watch Line of Duty, Happy Valley (waiting for Season 3 to be released in the US), Unforgotten (actually, I will watch anything with Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire since I first saw them on Last Tango in Halifax), Shetland, Helen Mirren’s Prime Suspect from the 90s. For more lighthearted mysteries on Acorn/BritBox, we watch My Life is Murder and McDonald & Dodds. We don’t have Apple TV so regretfully haven’t seen Ted Lasso. Fun topic today, Debs! —Pat S.

  32. I check the blog between 5 and 6 while I'm watching the evening news. I get to see a lot of comments then. I watch most of the CBS shows except the reality stuff, a lot of ABC including The Rookie's, Magnum, PI and the Blacklist on NBC and a few things on the CW and Fox. I do all the Marvel and Star Wars live action shows. Although I enjoyed the first season of Ted Lasso on a Comcast free preview, I'm not subscribing to another streaming service. Disney Plus and Grokker (exercise channel) are enough. I would love to see the new Star Trek series but I may be able to get them from the library on DVD's. I did that with The Good Fight.

    1. Sally, we are big fans of The Rookie. I think it may be the only thing broadcast show we still watch (although we get it on Hulu.) We love all the characters, and I am maybe a little bit in love with Tim Bradford:-)

    2. Count me in on enjoying The Rookie, too. And, last night I caught the last half of True Lies. I think I'm going to like it as well.

  33. Have any of you seen Ghosts? It is on CBS, so free tv, and so funny. Based on a British show of the same name. Very witty, loads of historical references. Made for the folks in this group.
