What Hank's Writing--A Letter to YOU!

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN:  Happy Pub Day to meeeee!!! It had seemed like the day would never arrive--the process of writing a book, editing a book, creating a book, having galleys and drafts and proofs and even more edits and deadlines and cover talks and then...yes. There is it. The preciousssss.

And my next goal was to hit the road for book tour for ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS. (Oh yes, and finish the next book.)

But first, my editor had one more assignment. The publisher planned to send review copies of my book to the big shots on their list, and wanted me to write a letter to accompany the mailings--sort of an introduction to the book, and from me.

Here is what I wrote.

Dear  Reader:

Stephen King once advised authors to write what they fear. Gotta tell you, as I was writing All This Could Be Yours, I was definitely following his brilliant advice.  Because what could be scarier than a book tour?

Right? As you well know, what happens after a book is published becomes a combination of roller coaster, hurricane, high dive, and mountain climb--an incredibly nerve-wracking brain-breaking time-zone-juggling book tour sprint from airport to bookstore to library to airport.

Yes, it’s a joy and a delight, and I’m always humming Magical Mystery Tour, but I also know that at every single moment of every single day something absolutely disastrous could happen.

And whoa. The suspense can kill you. You never know who you’ll meet—and what they have in store for you. What could possibly go wrong? Ha. That’s exactly what inspired this thriller.

All This Could Be Yours is high concept and super meta--about a debut author with a surprise best-selling novel who is sent by her publisher on an exciting and extensive (read: grueling and exhausting) national tour.   She soon discovers she's not traveling alone--she's being followed by someone who's obsessed with ruining her career and destroying the beloved family she left back home.

Tessa is terrified that it's the result of a Faustian bargain she made long ago. Is her deal with the devil about to come due?

I could tell you the rest, but I won't, and I’d adore you to discover Tessa Calloway’s dilemma for yourself.  And to join her cat-and-mouse cross-country chase through bookstores and libraries, and discover how she uses the secrets of writing to save her life.

As someone who has experienced the stress and chaos and the fabulousness of book tour, I hope it will speak to you, too, about the juggles we all have, and the decisions we all make, and the sometimes-heartbreaking sacrifices, as well as the glorious successes.

ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS is a love letter to readers, writers, libraries and bookstores: a revealing look inside the world of a relatable and confident woman struggling to balance her wildest dreams as an author and her devotion to her family with the devastating and terrifyingly destructive secrets of her past.

I am so pleased and honored that we have been on this journey together, and will continue to do so, and I'd adore to come see you and talk with your many readers about this adventure. And oh—plot twist. You may see yourself in the book!  Not by name of course, but I hope you will recognize the depth of my respect and admiration for you and for all you do.

With endless gratitude and affection

Hank

HANK: Reds and Readers, have you ever written a letter to your readers? What would it say?  Have you read such a letter from other authors? What works, and why?

And yes, I am on book tour right now! On Wednesday Sept 10, I'll be celebrating ALL THIS  at the iconic West Newton Cinema--with Lisa Gardner!

Check here for my events--I do hope you will join me!

  1. Happy Book Birthday, Hank!

No, I can't say that I've ever read a letter like yours from any other author . . . but I must say that your love for your wonderful book and for writing certainly shines through! I hope you have a terrific book tour . . . .

  2. HANK: Happiest book birthday to you!!

You already know I LOVED reading this book!!
Yes, it's very meta, and I felt Tessa's excitement, dread & fear while on her whirlwind first book tour.

I hope you have a memorable (in a good way) real-life book tour.
I will be cheering you on remotely (after watching you on this past Sunday's virtual launch with your BFF Hannah Mary McKinnon). I am signed up for the WGBH Beyond the Page virtual event on September 30.

  3. Happy Book Birthday, Hank! My copy is on the way. I tried to fit a trip to Massachusetts into this week but it was already packed with events including theater tickets this past Sunday night.
Have an exciting and successful book tour! I will try to attend a virtual event or maybe even in person when you swing back this way. As for the letter you wrote, it shines.

  9. Dear Hank,

I've never read a letter like accompanying an ARC that I had been sent. The closest I come to anything like that is occasionally I'll get a message from Goodreads where an author has written a little letter to help hype a different author's book that is about to or just has been released.

Looking at your website events page you seem to be, much like Craig Johnson, on a book tour that resembles what it was like for a rock band on tour in the 1980s. That is, a massive list of dates that cover and crisscross the country for weeks and/or months.

Thankfully, I will be seeing you tonight at the Plymouth Public Library on official launch/pub day for ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS. I can't wait! See you then!

    Sincerely,

    Jay

  10. Congratulations! It sounds like you have another winner on your hands. I read one review yesterday that makes me want to dive into the pages immediately ("a solid thiller with an attitude that is all Hank Phillippi Ryan" -- Ben Boulden).

Also, it sounds to my fevered brain that ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS is screaming for a sequel. Remember Rudy Giuliani with the Four Seasons press conference held mistakenly at a landscaping company rather than at the hotel of the same name? I think Tessa Calloway's next book should be with a different, albeit incompetent, publisher. (Yes, I know there is no such thing, but it IS fiction, remember?) The publisher could mistakenly schedule her book tour to various places such as a deli, a plumbing supply house, an off-track betting establishment, a day care center, a White Nationalist rally, a soup kitchen, a massage parlor...the possibilities are endless. The new crazed person following her book tour would have a hard time figuring out just what was happening. This is just a suggestion, mind you, but I really think you should start getting cracking on this sequel.

    1. To be fair, getting scheduled at one WRONG place would be bad. But if it was a series of bad places, clearly it would be the publisher who was crazed. :D

  11. Congrats, Hank! It's easy to see how proud you are of this book, and rightfully so! You've shown us all how hard you work to make each book the best it can be. The letter is straight from the heart. I can't say I've ever seen another like it!

p.s. Jerry has a great idea!

  16. Because I learned so much about different people's styles of writing at your online dual-launch with Hannah Mary McKinnon the other night, I feel more empowered in my own writing.
    Thank you Hank and Hannah!

  19. Congratulations on another great one! I must admit to living vicariously through you and pretending I have that much talent, energy, personality and great taste in clothing. And for what it is worth, I'm with Jerry on the sequel idea. I can see a landfill as the book signing site and just a mile down the road stands a lonely independent bookstore seething because they couldn't get that signing. -- Victoria

  20. HANK: Happy book birthday! My preorder of your novel ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS arrived via my phone. I preordered the eBook. Look forward to reading at the end of the day.

Wish I knew the answer to your questions. Though I have never written a letter to my readers since I've yet to publish my novel, I wonder if the letter would be like the Author Speed dating at mystery conferences.

Have I read such letters from other authors? No. I think your letter is the first time I've seen a letter written to readers.

What works and why? Wish I knew the answer regarding what works for me. I think a letter like your letter would work for me because it explains what the inspiration for the story was. I like to know about the story.

  25. Hank,

Happy Book Pub Day! I was notified this morning that my copy of your book is on the way.
I see that you’re going to be in Darien Connecticut on the 17th, and I would love to go to hear you. But I have a really hard time seeing at night, so I’ll have to sit this one out. I used to just about live at that bookstore when they were located in Stamford, as it was just a few blocks from where I worked. I spent many lunch hours there and also many Saturday afternoons. (My sister‘s best friend‘s late husband owned that store many years ago. So I felt like I had a stake in it!)
I’ll be with you in spirit!

  29. Excellent evening at the Unlikely Story Bookstore last night! That session with you and Jeff Kinney, owner of the bookstore and author of The Wimpy Kid series of books, was the absolute best session that I have ever attended. His questions were spot on and drew all of the right issues out for you to share with the audience last night! Although I read the book last May via your ARC, I reviewed my notes yesterday afternoon and you did a marvelous job to ensure that the audience went home and turned those pages very quickly! Thanks for a wonderful experience and best wishes for a great and uneventful (ha, ha!) tour!!!
