RHYS BOWEN: I've been doing a lot of juggling lately--not with balls or flaming torches, but we various things I'm supposed to be writing.
1. Clare and I are forging ahead on the next Molly book, called, tentatively A WHIFF OF SCANDAL. It features Vanderbilts, car races, and the moral police. Clare is doing most of the work and I'm hovering in the background, making occasional suggestions but open to phone calls every evening.
2. I'm about to begin the next Royal Spyness. I was toying with various ideas that might be fun when it suddenly hit me. Duh! It's the Coronation. It has to be about the Coronation to which Georgie and Darcy are invited. And who else might be attending and whether there might be any drama. No title as yet. If you have any brilliant suggestions to do with being crowned etc, do share them. Unfortunately I used he word Crowned in a title already.
3. The edits just arrived for the stand alone novel I just turned in. (Called, at this moment FROM SEA TO SKYE). I am always terrified to open that letter in case the editor has said, "While it's a nice story we don't like the main character as a twenty something woman. Could you make her a Russian man of fifty and rewrite the crime in the second half setting it in Chicago?" Luckily the editors like it, had some really valuable insights into making my character's arc stronger and clearer. So they will be a breeze to work through and the book will be stronger for them. Pfew and thank you editors.
4. Which means my editor will want to see story suggestions for a new contract (which I hope is forthcoming). So I've been dabbling with several ideas, all quite different. I can't share them now, except one takes place in the present, in 1820 and in 1450. (why do I give myself these impossible challenges when I could write a nice straightforward murder set on Nantucket?)
So I have been, and should be, busy except.... last week I had a horrible fall while I was walking with John on our favorite trail by the Bay. To get to the trail you have to go up a ramp, along a berm or dyke and then down the other side. At the top there is a tiny step onto the ramp... at least it's tiny for most of it but on one side it's deeper where dogs have continually peed against the railing and worn away the soil. I came around the corner, caught my foot on this step and went sprawling down the concrete ramp. Hit my head on the railing and took the skin off both arms and my knee. I am bandaged to look like an audition for the curse of the mummy. And not finding it easy to sit and work.
At least I tell myself I didn't break anything or get a concussion. So healing vibes would be appreciated, please! I won't post pictures because I'm sure you don't have that strong a stomach.
So let's think positively and come up with some great titles about a coronation, please?
Oh, dear . . . feel better in a hurry, Rhys . . . take care of yourself and don't work too hard . . . .
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteRHYS: Oh no, falls suck. Glad you did not break any bones. Heal soon!!
ReplyDeleteTitle possibilities:
CORONATION FEAR
KING DREADFUL AND DEADLY
Thanks Grace!
DeleteOh so sorry you took a tumble! Mix that with crowns and now I’ve got the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme stuck in my head.
ReplyDeleteFetch a Pail of Water by Rhys Bowen
Glad you weren’t more seriously injured!
I like that!
DeleteOh, no Rhys! Sending healing vibes and much love for a quick recovery. That fall sounds dreadful.
ReplyDeleteI am excited about everything you are writing. Georgie and Darcy at the coronation. So many possibilities for mayhem! Molly and the Vanderbuilts. Will they be awful and snooty? I can hardly wait for the next Georgie book. And a stand alone set on the Isle of Skye? So much to.look forward to!
Thanks Judy!
DeleteThat was me above looking forward to all your books.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you fell. I'm glad the damage wasn't worse, but I,'m sure it's terribly painful from what you describe. Sending healing thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what your new story will involve, so these suggestions could be way off:
Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown ...
Heavy is the head that wears the crown ...
A crooked crown ...
Crowning Glory
To Crown It All ...
The jewel in the crown ...
Thanks Elizabeth!
DeleteGosh, Rhys, I'm so sorry. Good you didn't get a concussion, but still. I hope you heal up soon and easily. I took a fall a few weeks ago in the dark when Hugh and I were staying at my son's in their absence. I tripped navigating a narrow corner in their room and crashed my head and hand on a metal radiator. My scalp bled all over the pillowcase, but at least I also avoided a concussion and have finally healed.
ReplyDeleteI'm worthless with titles, so I won't even try.
Oh no, sorry to hear about you too Edith!
DeleteOooh so sorry. Edith
DeleteSo sorry, Edith!
DeleteRhys, I am sorry to read about your fall. Here's to a fast recovery for you.
ReplyDeleteAs far as a title suggestion, I was going to go with "A Golden Crown" but Game of Thrones kind of ruined that one when they had an episode with the same title.
"Crown & Scepter"
"The Crown Jewels"
For a bit of cheekiness: "Coronation Street"
Coronation street is brilliant, Jay!
DeleteRhys, Sending healing vibes. I hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteI’m looking forward to both the new Molly Murphy & Her Royal Spyness books.
Dianne Mahoney
Thanks Dianne
DeleteMe too, can't wait for each of those books, and Rhys, take care and be well. We love you!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteFirst of all I am sending healing vibes! You are a treasure and well loved ❤️
ReplyDeleteAs for a title ‘’Enthroned in Splendour’’ or ‘’Chasing the Throne’’
Sending more healing vibes from Canada 🤗
Thank you, Dorothy!!!
DeleteRhys, I hope you heal quickly and aren’t in pain. That’s exciting news about all the irons you have in the proverbial fire.
ReplyDeleteLike Brenda, I am thinking about Jack and Jill so have Broken Crown in my mind. Beyond that, I am just repeating what has already been suggested. Sorry! Take care of yourself. — Pat S
This is a great suggestion! Thanks
DeleteGlad to hear it wasn't worse Rhys!! Hope you are on the mend soon.
ReplyDeleteI like Jay's suggestion of "Crown & Scepter".
Thanks
DeleteOh Rhys, healing vibes coming your way from northern Ohio! I can definitely sympathize because I did something similar earlier this year. Velcro kitty attached to one shoulder, over-sized load of laundry under my arm, missed the top step coming up from the basement and went sprawling--luckily cat flew off safely and my head did not bang the concrete floor.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to hearing your ideas for your new stand-alone and already have my fingers crossed for the idea encompassing the present, 1820, and 1450--so much fun to read!!
Ouch. Sounds awful. I’m glad you’re okay!
DeleteOh Rhys, I'm so sorry about your fall! I took a tumble somewhat like that in Nashville a few years ago and still remember not only the pain but the fright of it. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a lot to offer for titles. Like Dorothy from Winnipeg, my mind went to the word "Throne" if you feel like Crown is unavailable.
I really had to laugh, though, when I read your comment "why do I give myself these impossible challenges when I could write a nice straightforward murder set on Nantucket?" I immediately thought "Because you are Rhys Bowen, and this is what you do so well!"
Thank you, Susan. I like Throne too!
DeleteI'm always amazed by the number of projects you are able to juggle so successfully! I'm glad the editors were supportive.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about your fall. It sucks! I took a tumble last week on uneven pavement and hurt my knee and elbow. Still recovering The bruise extends an amazing distance down the front of my lower leg.I too am grateful for no broken bones or concussion.
Oh we’re a pack of wounded warriors, Gillian! So sorry
DeleteYikes, Rhys, I am so glad you didn't break your own crown. That sounds pretty scary, and John must have been worried for you, as well, watching you tumble. Healing vibes on their way.
ReplyDeleteNo suggestions for titles, I'm afraid, but excitement for Darcy and Georgie to attend the coronation! That sounds like a fun writing gig, with lots of potential for juicy descriptions.
When did Coronation Chicken get invented?
DeleteQueen Elizabeth but intriguing title!
DeleteApparently in 1953, Karen, for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation banquet. — Pat S
DeleteFrom Celia: Dear Rhys with everyone else I am so sorry to learn of your fall and am sending healing karma to support and surround you.
ReplyDeleteAfter a conversation with my younger g'son who spent the summer training to be an EMT and has seen some difficult sights among the elderly, I bought a walker designed to go "off road ". It has heavy wheels and as I am still regaining my balance from my earlier traumas this year I have, graciously I hope, given into my family's concern that I don't fall while working in regaining my former strength. Boring but necessary.
As for titles, not my strength but I've tried thinking of Coronation items - orb, spurs, gold music, horses and carriages, robes and rings. Oh dear, no help I'll stop.
Does Georgie forget her coronet?
I’ve been trying all of those words, Celia. And my annoying thing is that I’m perfectly mobile, can run up stairs etc but just didn’t see a step was higher at one side than the other!
DeleteFrom Celia: would love to run up
DeleteAnd down but at least o can climb stairs now. Good luck with the title.
I like the sound of Coronation Rings and Robes
DeleteSending healing thoughts your way and wishes for a speedy recovery. Just for giggles: Queenie and the Coronation (hope you laughed!) For now, just take care of yourself. (Barbara C.)
ReplyDeletePaula B here ~. so sorry about the falling downs. I have come to the conclusion that this is the tipping season. So many people have tipped over bc of stumbling or simply walking where they’ve always walked. In my case, moving hurriedly backwards to avoid the teeth of an overly ambitious pit bull. Fell into a sticker bush and flowed that with slammed my head into a wall for a most impressive goose egg. Felt sorry for the owner as he was trying to control said ambitious dog. Be careful everyone and be aware of the tipping (over) season.
ReplyDeleteOh Paula, fellow wounded warrior! Sending healing vibes your way you too!
DeletePaula B again ~ I want to say, Rhys, that Mrs. Endicott’s Splendid Adventure is the best. I enjoyed it very much. So much, that I’ve told all my friends it’s a must read. The women are friends of mine now and I wonder how the rest of their lives went. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
ReplyDeleteI’m so glad you liked it!
DeleteRhys, I’m very sorry to learn that you had a bad fall.
ReplyDeleteI’m always eager to get a new book from you but, please take the time to get better..
I’m sending you positive thoughts for a prompt recovery.
Merci Danielle !
DeleteI can't help with titles, but sorry to hear about the fall. Thank goodness no concussion and I hope you heal quickly.
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz!
DeleteRHYS: Oh dear. Grateful there is no concussion, though. Sending healing vibes. I got a letter from my primary doctor's office about how to prevent falls. Did you get a similar letter from your doctor? It sounds like you are juggling many things. So glad Clare can help with the new Molly Murphy novel and I look forward to reading the next one!
ReplyDeleteTitle for Royal Spyness connected to the Coronation could have a title like THE MISSING TIARA (?). TOWER OF LONDON RAVENS (?). THE MISSING CORONATION ROBE (?). THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE ROYAL GUARD (?). Perhaps a title can come from one of Shakespeare's quotes? I am thinking off the top of my head.
Thank you, Diana
DeleteSo sorry about your fall, Rhys. I had a bad fall three weeks ago. Nothing was broken but I still have a lot of pain, and I think I need to see an orthopedic specialist soon. Best wishes for a complete healing for you! I’m excited to hear that there are more books on the way.
ReplyDeleteDebRo
I’m sorry Deb. I hope they help you heal
DeleteOh no Deb, get well soon! xo
DeleteFeel better, Rhys! How awful, and how difficult the trip home must have been!
ReplyDeleteStraight to emergency and I left a trail of blood up the ramp!
DeleteIt's painful enough with the aches and bruises, but I think the humiliation is the worst. Count me among the wounded warrior Reds, darn it.
ReplyDeleteIn honor of us I suggest the title of Throne on Royal Ground.
That’s a good one!
DeleteGet better soon, Rhys. My young (50) something-niece - too much work to figure relationship out, you just need to know she turns up at family dos - anyway, she fell ash over tea-kettle in late July - may have involved a few libations. Anyway, probably landed flat on back and head. Result - bad concussion (and no more libations for a while). She is still suffering. She was using an ice-cap, which if you have never heard of it, is a cap, similar to a bathing cap crossed with a Norwegian braids toque, that you freeze and put on your head. Apparently it is good for concussions and migraines - available on Amazon. She said it made her feel better even if she looked funny, so for anyone, to file away in case needed.
ReplyDeleteAs for the title - I am stuck on the stone of scone, and can get no farther. If it is not a part of your story, you need go no farther either.
Ouch ! Head injuries are no fun. Luckily mine was just a bruise
DeleteSending healing vibes! Take care of yourself! I am in awe of your productivity. Look forward to reading your new and future books.
ReplyDeleteThank you !
DeleteRhys, may you soon be healed. Elisabeth
ReplyDeleteRhys, I love the ideas for all of the books, but especially Georgie at the coronation! I can't wait to read them all, so get better soon! So sorry about the fall, and am just glad you weren't hurt more badly.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteOh Rhys, I'm so sorry you had that bad fall. Such a helpless feeling when you fall, no control and too often lots of pain. And, it sounds like you had lots of pain, which I'm sure is still affecting you. It's hard to believe you didn't break a bone or have a concussion. I'm so glad you are okay, in the sense of not being injured more seriously. My last fall, I slipped on a wet kitchen floor and fell backwards, hitting my head so hard that I expected it to be majorly concussed, but no concussion. I guess being hard-headed can be an advantage. I do hope you don't push yourself too hard as you're healing from this fall. Your body did suffer a trauma, you know.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, but when you mentioned coronation, I immediately thought of Coronation Chicken, which probably won't work as a title, but there are different directions you could go with it, from it being an actual food and playing a part, or it could be a person who is not brave enough to stop a disaster, which means Georgie must. Then, another CC title could be Coronation Chaos.
From Celia: I like Coronation chaos but Coronation Chicken was a recipe developed for Queen Elizabeth II Coronation by Constance Spry and Rosemary Hume at the Winkfield School outside London. I have the cookbook which is signed and was a 21st birthday gift from my aunt who worked at Winkfield
DeleteOh Kathy. So many of us have fallen. I think we need a full time monitor, preferably a big strong Swedish masseur!
DeleteGah! Rhys, that's terrifying. So glad you have enough bounce in you to not have gotten a concussion. Do rest and recuperate. We will all think in the titles for you!
ReplyDeleteRiffing on Kathy Reel's suggestion for titles: A Coronation Calamity; Coronation Conspiracy
