Share the holiday spirit

ROSEMARY HARRIS: Lots of us will be food shopping this weekend, planning for next Thursday's holiday. I know I'll be buying some items I never purchase during the rest of the year - shelled chestnuts, fancy cheeses and french leaves to put them on.
They're expensive but what the heck, it's for friends and family and it's only once a year, right?

But Thursday will be just another day for many families. They won't have turkeys, with special sauces and stuffings. No hams with cloves and pineapples. No sweet potatoes - with or without marshmallows. No chestnut soup shots (one of my specialties) and no homemade pies.

The Women of Jungle Red invite you to visit one of the websites listed below. They are food banks and organizations who will be working hard to make sure that those of us who might not have a turkey and all the trimmings next week still have a nourishing meal and something to be thankful for.

Fairfield County Food Bank http://www.foodbanklfc.org/
Greater Boston Food Bank http://www.gbfb.org/
Goddard Riverside Community Center http://goddard.org/
Community Food Bank of New Jersey http://www.njfoodbank.org/
Or just Google Food Bank, wherever you live and a list of organizations should pop up.

Jan Brogan: I'm adding my favorite in Boston, The Pine Street Inn: http://www.pinestreetinn.org/

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: We love you all..and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving..in every way.

Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. A food bank in a nearby town is OUT of food!!! My daughter and I are buying things this weekend to take to a local merchant who is collecting. What a nice thought to post, Rosemary!

  2. Having so many friends who are going through serious health issues at the moment, I'm really thankful for the small things--like having all my facilities and being able to enjoy small pleasures.
    A blessed Thanksgiving to all!

  3. Many food banks around the country are low on food or even out of it. It's been a bad year. Some of our local food banks have put out emergency appeals at various times this year to past donors because they couldn't keep up with the demand. I've started buying extra each week to take to my closest one, which covers a huge area.
