We're TEN!

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: Wow. I just had the most amazing trip down the Reds memory lane. I've read the first two months of Jungle Red blogs!  It wasn't just for nostalgia's sake, and more on that in a minute.

But amazing fact number one:  We've been blogging as Jungle Red, in various incarnations, for ten years! Since March of 2007.
2007! TEN YEARS!

That was the year Nancy Pelosi became the first female speaker of the house, the first iPhone was released (at a price of $599), the housing bubble burst (with mortgage defaults up 93 % from the year before). It was the year of the Greensburg tornado, and Virginia Tech. Bob Barker left Price is Right. The Departed won Best Picture. (And the Red Sox won the World series, just saying.)

Our first blogs were SO different from the ones you see now. The first one, halting and uncertain and self-conscious was a conversation, sort of, about first lines. (So we're stayed on topic all these years) . But it had no photos.

Reading back over those blogs (don't, okay?) you can tell it took us a while to find the Jungle Red voice. I love that evolution.

And since that day? We've had 4.5 million page views. Four point five million page views!  Something is keeping this baby going. And you know what? It's all of you. And for that we are infinitely grateful.

But we wanna know: Why do you keep coming back? What do you hear or see or enjoy? And when you read the Reds, do you do it on your desktop, or laptop, or phone? Do the photos work? Do you have any technical issues?

Reds, what do you think about our Jungle world?

HALLIE EPHRON: I remember the early days... Hank, you started it, didn't you? And I wasn't at all sure it would catch on. In the early days we didn't blog every day. Now it's a part of my daily routine and I look forward to hearing from so many regulars and surfacing lurkers.

And remember the Jungle Red quiz we'd ask of all our guests...
Pizza or chocolate?
Audrey or Katharine Hepburn?
Restaurant or eat in?
It got a little tired so we stopped but it was pretty cute.

HANK: Oh, I loved the quiz! And yes, I was a founding member with Jan Brogan and Rosemary Harris--but Hallie, you came fourth, right? And started from day one.

Note Ross in the background here!
INGRID THOFT: Tin or diamonds?  That’s the question to be answered on one’s 10th anniversary!  The traditional wedding gift is tin, and diamonds is perhaps a bit extravagant, but ten years of original content and community is surely worth celebrating!  I’m relatively new to Jungle Reds, and I’m still a bit awestruck by the company I’m keeping.  Hank, Hallie, Julia, Lucy, Rhys, Debs, and my fellow newbie, Jenn, are smart, gracious, and talented, and I’m proud to share the masthead of Jungle Red with them.  I’m also amazed by the readers and commenters who show up each day with thoughtful, insightful, and entertaining comments.  There wouldn’t be a Jungle Red without all of you, so bravo, everyone!

LUCY BURDETTE: At the risk of sounding self congratulatory, hooray for the Reds! Ingrid has it right – it's not just the writing reds gang, it's our blog commenters who really make this a fabulous community. I was so pleased to be invited to join this group in the second wave of additions. I had no idea it would be so much work, but also a fantastic way for a writer to feel she's not alone. Of course I would prefer we all lived in the same town and could have potluck block parties, but since that's not possible, this is the next best thing.

DEBORAH CROMBIE: Ten years! And do you know I had no idea exactly when Julia and I joined the blog? I had to hunt through the posts until I found my first one--January 10th, 2011. I can't believe it's been nearly seven years. Time flies when you're having fun, right? And I do mean that seriously. I can't imagine a day without Jungle Red. We are so lucky to have this ongoing conversation every day with friends all over the country--and I know there are lots of you out there who read and don't comment, but we love that you're there.

I did go back and read some of the very early posts, and while I'll agree that we are a bit more polished now, I think those early entries were adorable. And now I'm wondering how we could organize a virtual potluck....

JENN MCKINLAY: Debs, I make a killer mac and cheese which I am happy to bring to the potluck. Oh, and Ingrid, I'm voting for diamonds - in fact, can we all have tiaras? Even though I am a newbie to Jungle Red, the kinship I have found in the Reds community has been the greatest reward for me. I've met a lot of people in the writing world, but I can honestly say, I've never met a nicer or more supportive group than the people here. Thanks for inviting me to the party and here's to ten more entertaining, illuminating, and fascinating years!

HANK: Yes, yes, ten years at least! And tiaras for everyone.

RHYS BOWEN: Jenn, yes, we all need tiaras! I was the first geographically different person to join the Reds, I'm not sure how many years ago. Almost ten, surely. Until then they had all been clustered in the North East and I think I was invited as a token westerner! My one disadvantage being that I could never comment until three hours after everyone else. But what a joy it has been, chatting with these amazing women every day. I never had sisters and this feels like a group of sisters (without the bitchiness and petty jealousies and 'mom always liked you best!) I
I think we have every right to be proud. Not only have we survived when we have watched other blogs come and go, but we have thrived. Our audience has grown. We have become a respected PR source for publishers who beg us to have their writers as guests. And we have built up an amazing and loyal community. So I'm raising my virtual glass. Here's to the next ten years, Reds community!

HANK: Yes, yes, yes, Reds. Cheers!  (Julia is on family business, and will be back soon.)

 So--five big things, well, six:

1. We're giving away books! EIGHT winners will be chosen at random--and each person will get a book from a Red!

2.  We need your input and help--what works about Jungle Red? Why are you here? Do you love guests, chats, writing life, reading life, everyday life, all of the above?  Do you read on a phone or a desktop or laptop? Does it look okay? DO you check in every day?

3. Check in! We'd love to know who . you are and where--time for lurkers to say hi. We'd love to meet you!

4. Thank you thank you thank you thank you--each and every one of you is a treasure. We are incredibly grateful, and we are planing the huge party. Somehow. Somewhere. (what will you bring?)

5. And don't forget--comment to enter your name for a Reds book.

6. WE LOVE YOU!

  1. Ten years is a fantastic accomplishment . . . cheers and thanks to all the Jungle Red ladies for all those blog posts. May there be many, many more.

Generally, I read on my laptop. I’ve tried my tablet, and it works in a pinch, easy to read on, not quite as easy to post a comment. But my phone, while good for reading, is not at all posting-friendly.
I absolutely check in every day.

I enjoy the variety of the posts and every one, be it guests, casual chats, or recipes. I think part of the charm is that it is always interesting and never completely predictable, which is an encouragement to check in and see what the day’s topic might be. But I think the staying power is in its heartfelt sincerity. It’s worthwhile.

Why do I think it works? Because this group, the wonderful writers and readers, write and comment from their experiences, their own lives, their hearts. It’s like family and I deeply appreciate that I can stop by each day, share thoughts, and visit with this amazing group.

  3. 1. I came here because three authors I am a fan of prior to discovering the blog are part of the Jungle Reds. Plus adding a fourth since I've been here. It gives me a chance to read more from them outside of the fiction world. And potentially discovering the works of the other JRW bloggers as well. Plus getting to interact with Hank and Ingrid always makes my day.

    2. I love all of the different topics that are covered. Sometimes it may not be my thing so I don't comment but it has become one of the first sites I visit each morning. I read it on my desktop and it looks fine.

    3. By making the comment, I'm obviously checking in and I'm from Wareham, MA a town without a bookstore unfortunately.

    4. I'm not much of a party person, but if the party was in MA I'd go to the first annual Jungle Red Con. :D

Happy 10th Anniversary. I'm a latecomer to the site but I've enjoyed the hell out of my time here.

  5. Kudos for the ten years! I think I've been reading and commenting for most of them - and I read on my laptop at my desk in the northeast corner of Massachusetts (but have also found you on my phone when I'm traveling). You are the first blog I read every morning, and when there's some small posting glitch I keep checking back until the post comes up. You have created such a lovely community, both on the front and the back. I've discovered new authors I like, tried out recipes you've shared, and just soaked up the grace and wisdom you all offer. I've also been honored to be a guest several times in the last five years since my first novel came out. Thank you! Here's to ten more years - and, since it's full summer, I'll bring my Caprese salad to the potluck.

I love that I can jump into a conversation with a circle of writers I admire and learn something, be stimulated, or have fun. 12. Congratulations to all! I've been coming here almost daily ever since Rhys mentioned it in her FB post. For a long time I read the Lipstick Chronicles until they folded and that left a very big hole in my life. That sounds rather dramatic doesn't it. It was part of my first thing in the morning routine, coffee with some book friends. I no longer drink coffee but I still look forward every day to new conversations about books, authors, life. It all works for me so keep doing what you are doing! I read this on my desktop and have no technical issues at all. A big thank you to the new authors and books you have introduced me to!

  13. Congratulations, Reds, on ten wonderful years! I first put you on my bookmark bar when Debs told me, "I've been invited to join this blog . . . " I didn't read faithfully those first years, but lately you've become my go-to site first thing in the morning. Or in the middle of the freakin' pre-dawn hours, if the dog have me up for a trip to the back yard.

I like the mix of topics. Guests are fun, chats are interesting, and the glimpses you give of your daily lives are also often fascinating, whether it's Debs' beautiful garden or Hank's hectic book tour schedule. The fact that you post something every day makes it easier for me to come back again and again. The fact that you can parcel those daily posts out over eight women with different views and life experiences always keeps it fresh. (And shares the burden: I can't imagine having to be witty and thought-provoking every day for ten years, all by myself!) I read on my ancient desktop computer, but I sense a spiffy new laptop to read on sometime soon.

One of the best things about you is that you are so welcoming when lurkers step forward to express an opinion or share their own experiences. I particularly like it when you pose interesting questions that invite us to examine our own takes on a subject. Whatever you're doing, you're doing it right!

  18. Ten years! Wow. I've had whole marriages that didn't last that long. I read JR on my laptop every morning while having coffee, usually comment then. I rarely open the computer the rest of the day, but every time I pick up my phone, I check in, no problem commenting from there at all except for the tiny font.

I came here about four years ago, invited by Deb who had recently friended me on Facebook. I think I gave her a good review or something! (By the way, I only give good reviews. If I dont like the book, I don't review it at all, just so you know.)

Anyway, I felt like I was breathing rarefied air, being in the same virtual space with all these well-known authors. As you know, I don't write. I read. Lots. And I read everything, not limited to mysteries or to the Reds. But ever since I discovered Agatha Christie at about ten years of age, I've loved good crime writing best of all. It took me a while to get up the courage to post here, because what exactly would I have to say that any of you would be interested in? Since then I've got over that shyness, and I am so flattered with how you receive me and other fan girls -- and boys. I am looking forward to Bouchercon in October and meeting those of you I don't already know, which would be everyone except Deb. Yikes, what shall I wear?

Deb, you are so damn special. I love our occasional glass of wine in McKinney, and I am forever grateful for your introducing Diane to my son. They've got their own thing now, for whatever it is! It is good for him to have a taskmaster review his writing. I love you to pieces and look forward to seeing you in Toronto.

  21. I check in nearly every day -- I can't say I read every word every day, but most days I read the post and all the comments (I like the new way that we can comment on comments). What draws me here is an opportunity to hear the voices of the amazing JRWs as you negotiate your jobs as writers with the demands of other jobs and family.
Some of you I also follow on Facebook -- and the recent tale of Hank's dead squirrel (trigger alert -- there are maggots) was hilarious.

I read and comment on my laptop. When I read on my phone, I don't comment because I haven't quite figured out what I need to do to sign in. No suggestions needed, I just need to focus.

  24. Happy ten-year anniversary! And thanks for all the entertainment over the years, and the off-blog friendships, as well, both with the Reds and with so many of the commenters over the years.

Yes, I try to check in every day, from my phone, desktop, or tablet, whichever is handiest first thing in the morning. Which is when I check in, with my lone cup of daily coffee and square or two of dark chocolate. You are my eye opener, most days.

What makes it work? Hands down, it's because of the engagement of the very engaging authors here. There are lots of author blogs, but so often the authors never check the comments, or don't respond to them. The Reds are as loyal to their commenters as many of us are to you and your books. That means a lot.

I suspect, too, that your comment count has risen since you changed the comment section to a threaded format. It's much easier to search, and more fun to feel as though there are lots of different conversations going on, similar to a cocktail party. Without the cocktails, as far as we know!

And if I were bringing something to the party it would have to be a sinfully rich chocolate dessert, and something very special for this discerning and appreciative crowd. I think the flourless chocolate torte from Joy of Cooking would do it, and it makes enough for almost everyone. Prosecco goes well with it, so Cheers! Here's to ten more. Thanks for all the fun, dear Reds.

  25. Congratulations Reds! I have been reluctant to comment but thought I would give it a try today. I have been reading your blog for about three years now and it has been an excellent source for discovering authors and keeping me supplied with books to read. I have worked by way through Hank's, Deb's, Lucy's and Julia's books and am working my way through Rhys', Hallie's, Ingrid's and Jenn's. I love your posts! May you have many more years.

  27. I check in every day to see posts from writers you recommend and to read about any new books that you are working on. I've learned about many authors and bought or borrowed their books because of your recommendations. I have read all of Deborah's books and most of Hank's books and have sampled most of the other Jungle Reds. So many books, too little time.

While none of us may have quite realized when we joined the REDS what a commitment this blog would be, we also didn't know what an enrichment it would be and what it would come to mean in our lives. I love to imagine our friends all over the country checking in--little points of light, if you will excuse the borrowed metaphor:-) But in the case, very appropriate.

Here's to many more years and all our friends!

  30. I think I first found the Reds from a link on Julia's site, when I was checking to see when her next book was coming out. (I read the other day that she's taking a leave of absence and hope all is well with her.) When I got here, I realized two more of my favorite authors were also here -- Deb and Rhys. I had also read and liked a couple of Susan's books, and knew of Hank and Hallie, being from New England. (I've since read some of Hank's and Hallie's and Lucy's books and loved them. I still have Jenn and Ingrid on the TBR pile, but I'm sure I'll enjoy those, too!) I stayed because it's always fun and smart. I like the guest authors and chats about books and many other interesting topics. I like that the authors and posters seems sincere and down-to-earth and have formed a community. As a newbie-wannabe author, I like the glimpses into the writing processes of writers I admire. I don't always have time to post, but I look forward to checking in every day on my laptop. (It's just easier than typing on my phone or tablet.) Thank you, Reds, for such a wonderful corner of the web!

  31. Jungle Reds is usually the first Facebook post I click on in the mornings. It's a wonderful way to start my day! I am always entertained by each and every post and it's great to have the opportunity to interact with favorite authors as well as to read your interactions with each other, and see the true friendship here. Guest Author posts are appreciated as well and introduce me to books that I may not have come across on my own. It's fun to go down memory lane with you and to share anecdotes as well, and I always love the pictures ~

  32. Hello ladies and congrats! I have one of those "I Read Red" buttons and seeing it made me smile and reminded me why I love this blog. Even when I've been a little absent due to personal stuff going on, just popping in here feels like a visit with old friends - all of you, all the commenters, all the guests. I've probably said how I found you all. A sale of one of Deb's books on Nook, I immediately got hooked (of course!) and found on her website that she was a Jungle Red. From there I've found so, so many new authors to love and daily posts to read. I enjoy them all: the lines from what you're working on, the guests, tales of what you're up to, even the days you're tired and give us a recipe! Looks great on my laptop or phone. Thanks for being there! xo

  35. Congratulations! I'm trying to remember when I first discovered Jungle Reds ... I think around 2011/2012? I remember I was getting to know the mystery community, having fun learning things and reading everyone's books. Mysteristas was still going strong at the time ... One of the things I've liked about JRWs is that you're not always trying to be educational and teach us stuff. I like that your posts include fun insider looks at your lives and random, interesting topics. The guest posts are great too -- great way to learn about new-to-me writers!

I think the clincher is the tone of the blog: upbeat, inclusive, chatty, with a good mix of fluff (in a good way!) and serious. I get the sense that you-all don't always take yourselves so seriously all the time, which is highly refreshing. :-)

I used to read AND COMMENT nearly every day. Now I don't, but only because of time constraints, alas.

I love the variety of the site, the humor, the positivity, learning about writers whom you host, and hearing about the lives of writers. The others were quickly added to the list and that's one of my primary reasons for reading the blog every day from my laptop: authors new to me and new authors brought to a wider audience. I don't comment all that often as I live in Southern California and by the time I read the blog, it's already filled with comments. I do enjoy the photos and the variety of the posts. I love the fact that this blog is new seven days a week. I have found out about so many new authors and books, and other facts as well; thanks for the general discussions. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I mostly read the blog on my phone, unless I happen to be at the library or visiting at someone's house and using the computer there. I don't really have any trouble accessing it on the phone.

I like the fact that the JRW authors and the guest authors are positive and upbeat, and that there is no cynicism in their postings.

Since it's just about time for me to return from my lunch break I'd better stop here. I could write a book about how much I love this blog, the authors who are members of JRW, the guest authors, the people who visit the blog every day as I do. You're all people that I would love to get to know.

  55. The first thing I do on the computer every day, except when I just can't (and that's not often), is pull up the Jungle Reds blog. My first Bouchercon in Albany in 2013 was when I met the most generous and talented authors here. I have been a regular since that time, and become friends with the amazing women here, including Kaye Barley, who is the delightful first Sunday blogger, and with whom I shared some shady doings in NOLA. Hahaha! In the spring of 2013 I started reading the Jungle Red authors in preparation for that fall's Bouchercon, and I so hit the reading jackpot with you all being favorites whose books I just can't wait to read. Ingrid and Jen, I promise that I am going to catch up with you both, as one of my best rules of reading is to read all Jungle Red authors.

There's so much that I love about the blog, but I guess that I will start with the feeling of family and friendship I get from my daily visits. We all support one another and "never is heard a discouraging word" here. The Jungle Reds have also supported me as a reviewer and blogger, which means the world to me. Learning more about each of you over the past four years has been wonderful, too. And, I have been introduced to so many new authors and books here that have become favorites. I owe you all a big thanks for that.

I usually read and respond on my laptop, but I sometimes do so on my iPhone. I stay up into the wee hours, so I will often check to see if a new post is up before I go to sleep. Sometimes I just read it and wait to respond later, which is in the afternoon here most days. I love reading Joan's first comments when I check in early, and I have stopped more than once before posting if Joan's isn't there yet. Only rarely have I posted before. I find great comfort in you being there, Joan.

So, congratulations to the always fabulous Reds on ten years of success! You have all enriched my life with the infinitely interesting posts and with your friendship and genuine caring. Maybe I'll bring a key lime cheeseball to the party, as long as Haley doesn't get to critique it.

I usually do it either on my lunch break or some other time during the work day when I feel like I've earned a short break. Mostly I read on a desktop or laptop, but occasionally on my phone and I have never had any issues with it. I've been reading this blog for maybe 5 to 7 years?

I really enjoy the guest bloggers and am very appreciative when you point me toward additional authors whose work I will enjoy. But even more than those things, what I appreciate most is the sense of community here. Today is an exception (because it was a tough day and I didn't get to even peek at the blog under almost 6 pm) but I almost always read all the comments as well as the blog, and have come to appreciate a lot of the regular commenters nearly as much as I appreciate the Reds. I can think of nowhere else in my life where I get to interact with as many intelligent, funny, talented women (and a few brave men.) You allow me to use my brain and stretch my thinking and you give me a wonderful pick-me-up during the day.

  66. Hank, which questions do I answer first? LOL. Happy anniversary! Ten years! Wow! I cannot recall when I started reading Jungle Reds. Before or after I started Facebook. 2007 seems so long ago. I had been driving for a year. I was starting law school. Now I am working for a law firm.

About Jungle Reds, I remember reading Jungle Reds once in a while when Rhys and Susan had posts on Jungle Reds. I think I discovered this blog via their websites.

About me, I love to read mystery novels since my grandfather gave me Nancy Drew books when I was 10. I met Rhys at a panel for mystery novelists and was introduced to her first Evan Evans mystery book. I met Hank at Malice Domestic in 2016. Since the 2016 election, I have been reading Jungle Reds daily.

Congratulations on the ten years! I used to read another blog with Patricia Smiley and Jacqueline Winspear and I do not think it continued. Last post I think was in 2014 or 2015?

What do I like about Jungle Reds? I think it is for everyone. The authors range from cozy to thriller. And I learn about new books from author interviews. I noticed that often the day I read about a new book on your blog, I find the book at the bookstore. Coincidence? I enjoy the photos. I read the blog on my laptop. Easier with all the great photos. I enjoy guest posts like Kaye with her cute corgi dogs. And once in a while the reader learns about Jungle Reds' trips like Left Coast Crime or Bouchercon or Malice Domestic.
