Sequins and Spanx

DEBORAH CROMBIE: Did anyone watch the Golden Globes on Tuesday night? I'm not a huge awards show junkie, but I do like to watch them, partly to see what movies and TV I have missed in the previous year and might now want to watch--and then there's the FASHION! (My daughter and I like to watch together virtually and message our takes.) What is a better antidote to the continuously depressing news cycle than an evening of looking at gorgeous clothes--on the men as well as the women. The Globes did not disappoint!

Even if you didn't tune in live, all the showstoppers are all over the internet now. Here's Vogue's take. And here's the New York Times which I hope you can see subscription-free. Sorry I can't add any photos of the dresses and tuxes but they will all be under copyright.

I've never seen so many sequins--it was definitely a glittery night!

Some of my faves were Jenna Ortega's ethereal Gucci (although I thought some of the other bandeau gowns came off a bit like partially wrapped mummy...), Michelle Williams rocked Gucci, too, in her wonderful sea ruffle dress. Michelle Yeoh was stunning in Armani (I was so thrilled for her win!), and I loved Selena Gomez in Valentino, and Letitia Wright in Prada. Claire Danes in chenille bedspread by Giambattista, maybe not so much.

The men looked great, too. Loved all the pink, especially Jerrod Carmichael's pink tux.

Of course, contemplating all the hours spent in Spanx and push-ups and heels, I was just as glad to be watching, not wearing.

Any frivolous fashion favorites, dear REDs and readers? And what about the awards themselves? What winners (or losers) in the various categories shouldn't be missed?

  1. Definitely lots of glitter and sequins, but I appreciated the simplicity of Olivia Hamilton’s ensemble . . . .

  2. I enjoyed watching the Golden Globes and seeing what everyone was wearing. Some of my female favorites were Michelle Williams, Jenna Ortega, Quinta Brunson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jennifer Coolidge, Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, and Jean Smart. My "what were you thinking wearing that" ones include Heidi Klum, Claire Danes, Dolly De Leon, Gigi Paris, and Amelia Dimoldenberg. I could add more to both lists, but that's enough. I'm far from a prude, but I really don't like the dresses in which the women's breasts are half (or more) out. There are better ways to let people know you got the big ones. It's late so I'm not going to comment on the men except to say that there seemed a lot of velvet jackets or trim, and the jackets looked too short on some of them.

The awards made me realize how much I've missed on streaming. I'm probably one of the last people not to see White Lotus. Oh, and I loved Jennifer Coolidge's acceptance speech. I was so glad she won. And, one last comment. It appeared more than one person speaking on stage had imbibed a bit too much.

    1. Yes, the closer to the end, the more tipsy! And there were definitely some dresses in the "What Were They Thinking" category!

  3. I have it on my DVR, will watch this weekend. I did watch the beginning and the host bored me.

    1. Jerrod Carmichael was pretty low key but I liked him. And he wasn't mean.

  4. I don't watch much TV at all or films. Truthfully, I didn't even realize it was on. My bad. I would have watched for the fashions. Next year, sigh.

    1. You can see all the outfits on line, Judy, which is the most fun part. I thought it was nice to see some glamor, and that FPA made at least a pretty good start at redeeming themselves from the scandals of the last couple of years.

  5. I don't watch those, but from the Vogue pix, there was a lot of ruffles and pale colors, which didn't appeal to me. Michelle Yeoh looked great in the dark blue!

    1. Oh. I agree with your opinions, Edith. Not a fan of the pale colors.

  6. NOPE, I didn't watch it (also no cable TV).
But I did love that Michelle Yeoh & Ke Huy Quan won for EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE. That was an amazingly weird but fun movie!

    1. I am a big fan of Yeoh, although I haven't seen EEAAO yet. (First up on my list.) But she looked absolutely gorgeous and gave a great acceptance speech. So moving.

  7. I didn't watch, so thanks for sharing. I think my favorite was Billy Porter's outfit. I love that fabulous deep wine color--and in velvet!

  8. No cable TV here, and like Judy, I didn't even realize the GG were happening. Thanks for the link to the Vogue photos, Debs, but I must confess that I am living under a rock and cannot appreciate where fashion has gone. Although I do like that men are no longer restricted to boring black. Andrew Garfield in Zegna's "burnt umber" (? I'm making that up) is beautiful.

    1. I thought Andrew Garfield looked great in that suit. I wasn't so crazy about Eddie Redmayne's brown tux with the giant cabbage rose on the lapel.

    2. Agreed. That giant thing on the lapel? Silly, I thought.

    3. It is broadcast on regular nbc network, no cable tv needed just an antenna.

  9. The dresses I liked best were Michelle Yeoh's, Rhianna's (I just wished the top hadn't been quite so low), Ana de Armas'. The men's were all very cool and creative. I hadn't seen any of the shows except my daughter loved the Elvis movie. The only movie we've watched on the big screen this year and loved was Top Gun Maverick with Tom Cruise.

    1. Those were the dresses I liked best, too! Dark colors, simple lines.

    2. It makes me anxious when I think women are going to have major wardrobe malfunctions (fall out of their dresses!) And it's very distracting when they keep pushing up their bosoms, as a couple of women did.

  10. I don't watch the awards shows live, but I do catch up on the fashion later, sometimes. Some of it is gorgeous, some...not so much.

Kathy, you are not the only person not to have seen White Lotus. I watched one episode. Not sure I'll watch another. It just didn't seem like a show for me (not a big fan of shows about unpleasant people).

    2. We haven't watched any of it, either. I didn't think badly behaving rich people would be my cup of tea? Anyone else have a take on this one?

    3. We also haven't seen it, and probably won't.

    4. Oh, I'm so glad we're not alone! I know so many people who raved about it and it...just wasn't for us.

  12. I’m really out of the loop this year. I usually do tune into the red carpet, if not the awards themselves but this time I didn’t even have the Golden Globes on my radar. Looking at the Vogue photos, it seems it is just as well that I missed them because I don’t know who many of the people even are this year.
The ladies who went with light colors were mostly wash-outs except for Margot Robbie in pink and Li Jun Li in silver. Viola Davis in blue, Letitia Wright in orange and Sheryl Lee Ralph in purple sequins looked nice. I definitely don’t like when the women have their globes on display and I prefer the men in classic black tux.

    1. Yes on all of those you mentioned, Brenda, but I especially liked Letitia Wright's orange gown. So different but classy and elegant. And just this morning I saw a photo of Taron Egerton with his mom at the awards (I didn't spy him on the broadcast) in a very classic black tux and he looked gorgeous!

  13. I only saw a tiny bit of the Golden Globes, and thought some of the dresses were absolutely insane! I mean insane! How do people even sit? Or walk? Or stand up? And I have never seen so many people wear unflattering dresses, that’s the point. They weren’t risky but gorgeous, they were ridiculous and made the people actually look bad. Why would you do this? The fabulous Jamie Curtis looked like some sort of character in a horror movie, And that spider outfit! And there’s one that looks like the bride on a wedding cake.
I just don’t get these kids today :-) Only Billy Porter looked fabulous.

  15. I don’t have cable and didn’t realize the Golden Globes were last night. And I’m so far out of the loop that I don’t know who half of these people are!

  16. Here's a link to the Harper's piece. https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/fashion/g42455333/golden-globes-2023-best-dressed/
I can't say I agree with all their picks. I didn't like Anya Taylor-Joy's outfit at all. But I did LOVE Monica Barbaro's Dolce and Gabbana red dress. Wow. And didn't Angela Bassett look great?

  17. No cable, so no Golden Globes for me. But I always check out the red carpet pics for the fashion.

Jenna Ortega's dress was beautiful. Unfortunately, it was wearing her, not the other way around. Four more inches of height would have made the proportions more flattering, in my opinion.

Viola Davis wore my favorite gown, and maybe not just because we saw her in The Woman King before we left Kenya. She is 57 years old, but FIERCE. Her performance was incredible on so many levels, not least of which she was incredibly athletic in the film, and wearing not much more than a leather swimsuit the whole time. It's pretty violent, but her character is based on a real woman warrior.

  18. Now, about the shows. Out of the movies, we had only seen Top Gun and Glass Onion and Mrs Harris goes to Paris--none in the theater. I want to see The Fablemans (so happy to see Spielberg pick up the awards for this autobiographical project,) Everything Everywhere All at Once, Elvis (if I can talk Rick into it,) The Woman King, Black Panther Wakanda Forever, maybe Women Talking. And I'm sure we'll watch the new Avatar when it's streaming, because it will look terrific on our new TV:-) Don't want to see Banshees of Inersherin, as much as I like the actors. I read a synopsis and it sounded horrible. Thoughts on any of these, folks?

We're always so behind on the TV shows as well, but I was very tickled to see Jeremy Allen White win for his performance in The Bear, which I thought was superb. Any recommendations on the TV shows, series or limited?

    1. Elvis was so good. Some disagree, but Austin Butler was just amazing in his portrayal of The King, and the kid sang most of the score, too. The story pushes reality a bit, but the set design, lighting and cinematography are appropriately Elvis glitzy.

  19. darn it! I do not have a working TV so I missed it! I noticed that I rarely like the American fashions at the Oscars nor the Golden Globes. I am very picky. I always love what Helen Mirren wears. I love what Meryl Streep wears. There are several others that I loved. Never have been a fan of ballgowns that reveal too much!

  20. I don't watch the award shows, but I LOVE the reviews from Tom and Lorenzo! If you like following fashion and celebrity, you need to be on their site, tomandlorenzo.com. They have an unerring eye and their style is what I would call "gently b*+chy" - Jenna Ortega's dress has "the horrible old-pantyhose color."

  23. I missed the prize-giving and haven't seen most of the movies either, but I've just had a great time looking at the stars on the sites you provided, Debs. I will have to remember your "What Were They Thinking?" category, because that's usually how I feel about most of the Oscar dresses. My favorite at the Globes: Letitia Wright in Prada!
