For Your Summer Viewing Pleasure

DEBORAH CROMBIE: Okay, so we've all expanded our never-ending reading lists, thanks to Lucy last week. But who's watching what on these long, late, hot summer evenings?

We've seen GOOD OMENS on Amazon Prime, which we loved. Based on the 1990 comedic novel by the late Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman,  ancient adversaries must work together to prevent Armadeddon in the present day. Swaggering around as Crowley the demon must have been the most fun David Tennant has had since his stint as Doctor Who! But it was Michael Sheen as Aziraphale the angel who stole the show for me. Jon Hamm has a pretty great part, too, as the angel Gabriel. I'm glad that Pratchett and Gaiman finally got their book to the screen. It was one of Terry Pratchett's last wishes.

And then there was ENDEAVOR, but, sigh, it (and hopefully Shaun  Evan's mustache) is finished for the season as of last night. No spoilers here, but apparently they are filming another season. I always want to get back to Oxford, and I adore Shaun Evans, even with facial hair!

Fortunately, there's a new season of weird and wacky STRANGER THINGS to look forward to! The kids are growing up in this quirky series on Netflix, and there are of course monsters and goo galore. We watched the first two episodes for our Friday night date night. So far, we think Winona Ryder is even more fabulous this season. And the MALL has come to town!

Then on regular TV (the things I watch while doing kitchen chores), there's the new season of  MASTERCHEF,  and the first season of a new reality competition SONGLAND, which I've really enjoyed. In each episode,  aspiring songwriters audition for a different recording artist and the same three music producers (Ryan Tedder, Shane McAnally, and Esther Dean). I love seeing that creative process between the artists, producers, and the songwriters--it's like writers brainstorming, but it sounds a lot better!

Over to you, REDS!

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN: Okay, I will confess. The other day, I had some easy computer stuff to do and I thought--okay, I'll give this a try. MY super-cook stepson and his wife had asked me if I'd ever seen THE GOOD PLACE, and I kind of..dismissed it. A sit-com? On a regular network? How good can it be? SO I decided I'd multi-task, and and watch one episode while I worked. I WATCHED FIVE. IN A ROW. I am telling you, it is hilarious. Amazing. SO funny, and so thought-provoking, really, and  I bet I think of it every day. I got Jonathan hooked, too.

We love THE GOOD FIGHT, the sequel to The Good wife. And all The White Queen, Spanish Princess historicals, Which are driving  me crazy because they are not terribly accurate.  We have a dear friend who is a Brit, and I want him to come over and watch with us to point the errors so I don't have incorrect history in my head.  And oh, we are loving THE LOUDEST VOICE, about Roger Ailes. But can you believe it? You can only watch one episode a week. Come ON, how old-fashioned can you be?

LUCY BURDETTE: We are two episodes into season two of BIG LITTLE LIES. I was someone who thought they should have left the ending the way it was after season one. But oh my gosh the powerhouse women who are writing and acting in this show are amazing! We love every one of the performances--Meryl Streep oozes evil. It's astonishing.

In movie land, we watched and loved the new PAVAROTTI documentary. He was so talented and such a fascinating human being. Even if you don't think you love opera, it's wonderful. Left us with so many questions about talent and fame and whether it's worth it in the cost of your intimate life to be famous...a good topic for another blog???

DEBS: Oooh, I want to see the Pavarotti documentary!!

JENN McKINLAY: My only summer viewing to date has been to binge DEAD TO ME on Netflix! SOOOO good. Other than that, I've been at the movies to escape the summer heat. My fave so far was Spiderman: Far From Home. Tom Holland is the best Spiderman EVER.

RHYS BOWEN:  I have been doing no summer viewing, apart from BBC World and CNN as I've been traveling since June 1. It has been frustrating not being able to get the Women's World Cup on our TV (you have to pay for the extra channels) So I'll have catching up to do when I get home. I love THE GOOD PLACE,  Hank. So clever and such brilliant twists. And fun and different. I want to see Rocketman and and the Pavarotti documentary. Also I've been thinking about being famous and why some people have this drive to be outstanding and others with similar talents do not. Is it some gene we can identify? Let's definitely blog about it!  Back to my croissant and cafe au lait.

JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING: I finally took the recommendation from everyone I know and binged RUSSIAN DOLL.

Amazing, I want to go back and see it all again just to reverse-engineer the gorgeous, complicated story line. The other thing I've been binging on - you're all going to laugh because it's SO nerdy - are Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. There are a whole bunch you can stream on YouTube, including the ground-breaking 1987 MIKADO directed by John Michael Phillips with Eric Idle as KoKo, the Lord High Executioner.

Another seasonal fave is to re-watch classic summer blockbusters. The Smithie and I kept our family tradition by viewing INDEPENDENCE DAY on July 4th, and I've also seen DEEP IMPACT (the east coast gets wiped off the map.) Youngest and I watched GEOSTORM before she left for Kosovo. It's a terrible movie, but so much fun to snark at with the right companion. With all the earthquakes and aftershocks going on, I may put SAN ANDREAS into the DVD player to see Duane Johnson rescuing people while California falls into pieces.

DEBS: Julia, we love INDEPENDENCE DAY, and usually watch on the 4th, too. But we missed it this year, so maybe will catch  up after our company leaves this week.

HALLIE EPHRON: I've been making my way through ENDEAVOR and DEAD TO ME. Loved THE GOOD PLACE. And I just started watching UNFORGOTTEN on PBS. Anyone who missed RUSSIAN DOLL should watch it. BEST of the year, imho. Does anyone subscribe to BritBox? Is it worth adding??

DEBS: And what about FLEABAG? Anyone watching that? I keep reading that it is fabulous, and I have it on my Prime Watchlist but haven't gotten to it.

READERS, clue us in on what's on your screens?

AND CAN I JUST SAY HOORAY TO THE USA WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM!!! Now that's something to celebrate!!

  1. The one “always watch” show around here is “Jeopardy” . . . but as the fiftieth anniversary of Apollo 11 and the moon landing approaches, we’re mostly watching all the wonderful specials on the Science and NASA channels . . . .

  2. I loved Russian Doll. Watched it in May, and, like you, Julia, I'd like to watch it all again. Dead to Me was a good one, too. I have one more episode left for the new season if Stranger Things, and I think this season is spectacular. I'd like to watch the first season of Big Little Lies and catch up with this season. I'm binge watching some Criminal Minds, too, as one of the stations is running several shows a night on several nights a week. After listening to the author of the book Midnight at Chernobyl on NPR, I've watched the first episode of the new series entitled Chernobyl. So much was covered up so quickly, costing lives then and later. Now, for some sleep and more later.

  4. Russian Doll was extraordinary, and if you are curious, google Natasha Lyonne. She's had quite the checkered career, including an addiction battle. This is worth a second watch. Netflix I think

Killing Eve anyone? Talk about being addicted. And the second season was even better than the first. Prime

I binge watched Good Omen flying home from England last fall but haven't got back into it for the second season. Putting on list.

I started Fleabag, wasn't to my taste, Debs, but give it a try and let me know what you think.

Our latest binge is an Australian reality show, Instant Hotels. We watched S! last year, just finished S2 and went back and watched S1. These people are, what can I say, mostly over the top. Try it. I promise it's just the thing to wile away an air conditioned summer evening. Netflix

Britbox and Acorn are our go to choices. Hallie, I think I put you on to both of them a few years ago? Or maybe it was someone else. Both are worth the few bucks a month subscription. We've been watched The Royal, an old Brit soap. Good stuff. When we ran out of the offerings on Britbox, we discovered three more seasons on Prime, and we are doling those episodes out slowly, to make it last.

For complete hysterical laughter, I recommend IQ on Britbox, starting with the older ones with Stephen Fry. He's a polymath plus one of the funniest men alive, and he gathers a group of equally good people around him for answering the most interesting questions. It's like Jeopardy on acid. Not for the faint of heart.

If you think that all I do is watch TV or read, you're right. I'm off in a bit to get some labs drawn, keeping fingers crossed that the anemia is resolving. I feel much better, coughing less, and perhaps not quite as fatigued. Julie barely lets me lift a finger, preferring waiting on me at home to worrying about me in the hospital where I'm the worst patient ever.

And how about that soccer team! I'm devoted to Rapinoe, just so you know.

    1. Wait, it was The Good Place I watched on the flight. IMHO Good Omens is much better. But both are worth the watch.

    2. Instant Hotels? Writing it down...
YES on the soccer match. Riveting. Love some of the expressions the commentators used, like "her touch gets ahead of her." Surely there's an analog in writing.
Ann hope you eep feeling better...and better. I'm nominating Julie for sainthood.

    3. I agree about IQ, Ann. Stephen Fry is frighteningly intelligent.

    4. Ann, we have Acorn but haven't done Britbox, so that is probably inevitable. I will have to sign up just to watch IQ, which I've watched in the UK for years and absolutely LOVE!!! Stephen Fry is fabulous. And brilliant, in every sense.

  5. Adored Martin Clunes’ Manhunt, based on a true story, but the focus was on the police procedure, not the serial killer. Watching the fifth season of Line of Duty. My husband is beginning to think that all British policemen are corrupt (except Colin Sutton, of course) and that English villages are the least safe place to live.

  6. I basically don't watch any shows, but we have caught every World Cup game in the last couple of weeks. The US women are hot - now let's reward them commensurate with (or better than) the men! We have been out to the movies, though, and are lucky to have very cool art cinema in the next town. We saw the Nureyev bio pic White Crow (fabulous) and Biggest Little Farm (also fabulous), and Pavarotti is on this week.

  7. I don't have Amazon so I can't watch Good Omens, but I do love the story about how so many religious people petitioned to have the show cancelled. Revealing just how ignorant groupthink is however, they petitioned Netflix to cancel it. OOOOPS!

There's not a whole lot on that I watch right now. And pretty much all of it is just network shows. The Code, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, the abysmal revival of Match Game, the final season of Elementary and assorted crapola like Good Witch and Insight. I have no excuse for why I watch any of it (save Elementary which I love). I've even taken to watching reruns of the gawdawful According To Jim sitcom. Yes, I've been an uninspired viewer as of late.

Beyond that, there's been nothing crying out for me to invest my time in sitting down and watching. And I haven't even bothered to go see a movie in the theater since Avengers: Endgame.

I've been reading for run and review purposes, listening to music for review purposes and attending a concert or two.

  9. I love Acorn, Britbox, PBS - Endeavor (don’t like the mustache), Line of Duty, No Offence, IQ (hilarious), anything Martin Clunes, Vera or anything else Brenda Blethyn. I tried Fleabag but it didn’t grab me. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood. Saw When They See Us on Netflix, the new movie by Ava DuVernay about the Central Park Five - so powerful! I wasn’t sure I would make it through the first episode because of the way the police treated the boys. On a lighter note, I turn on HGTV to go to sleep by. Most nights, the shows at the time I get in bed are the house hunting types. I like to see what people choose, unless they are too picky or are too disagreeable, in which case I set the sleep timer and turn off the sound.

  10. Having so much fun reading and reviewing my TV watching diminished. But time to start cross stitching for Christmas, so television is back. I think I have confessed to loving all things 'tacky'. I am streaming Pretty Little Liars on Netflix and yelling "who wrote this stuff!" periodically. Now y'all have suggested some interesting viewing... so more embroidery time for me.
Where can I find The Good Place to stream?

  11. Debs, we were in the same boat of usually watching Independence Day on the 4th but somehow failing to do so this year.

Our find of the summer was on Acorn, the short series called QUEENS OF MYSTERY. It has a wonderful narration voiced by Juliet Stevenson that really elevates the series, I think. It is about a young policewoman in an English village with three crime-novelist aunts who interfere wildly in support of her efforts. And we are looking forward to sampling MS. FISHER'S MODERN MURDER MYSTERIES, a spinoff of the beloved MISS FISHER'S MURDER MYSTERIES. It is set in the 1960's and the protagonist is supposed to be Phryne Fisher's niece.

  12. Why does it seem titles come in clumps? The so-and-so's wife/daughter/apprentice, the whatever girl, and now good whatever.

Since we don't get anything beyond network TV and basic cable (which is mostly network TV, plus shopping channels, snore), I am always woefully behind. So when I saw that Outlander was on Netflix I started binge-watching it. I'm only on Season 2, but it's just so good. Hopefully, I've gotten through most of the torture scenes and I can stop fast-forwarding. Yuck.

We started watching Killing Eve with a visiting daughter, and I can't watch it, because of the violence. Sandra Oh is a great actress, and who knew she had such comedic potential, but it squicks me out.

Hallie, Britbox and Acorn have a million great shows. Vera, Shetland, and all the British police procedurals. Plus, Mum, which is different, and some funny older shows.

    1. Mum is one of the best shows going. And if you like the way Leslie Manville and Dorothy Atkinson play off each other, you should see them in Harlots! Second season is coming in a couple of days. Harlots is a Hulu original.

    2. Karen, having loved the first three Outlander books (I can never manage to get through the forth) I was really looking forward to the show. The casting is terrific, the scenery to die for, but the torture scenes were so awful that I never watched past the first season.

    3. Yeah, it's really awful, and in the book, as well. But it eventually smooths out from all the shock value.

    4. Karen, I'm more of a Luddite than you - only broadcast TV (thanks to an electronic antenna.) I have Amazon Prime, Youngest pays for Hulu, and the Smithie - maybe I should start calling her the Maine Millennial here - has Netflix. Between those three and the large amount of old movies on YouTube, I always have more than enough to watch. My problem is resisting the urge to add on still more subscription services. BritBox is sounding very appealing.

  14. Over the holiday weekend we binge-watched the new season of Stranger Things (better than season two, by far!) and DEAD TO ME (why oh why do I need to wait for another season? So good!) Now we have moved onto WHAT/IF, which has gotten mixed reviews, but is so far keeping our attention.

  15. We have sports channels and yes, recorded and watched every WWC game. We're binging on "New Tricks" DVD's from the library. Very clever plots, as light as Midsomer Murders, with the usual cast of British crime tv actors. "I know I've seen her before, but where?" After Endeavour, I think we get new Grantchester episodes.

  16. I did NOT get to watch the last episode of Endeavour last night. Crazy busy with company and kiddos, then fell into bed. Maybe tonight!

Grantchester is one I have issues with--I like the books SO much better. There is a new season of Poldark starting, too, isn't there? It's funny, I loved the original series, have read all the books, and am just absolutely crazy about Aidan Turner who stars in it (having seen him in quite a few other things.) But the show just didn't hook me and I've never made it past the first season. It was just so SLOW. Does anyone else love it? Should I try again?

We are watching on Netflix - Designated Survivor, just love the cliff hangers, Black Earth Rising which is about the Rwandan genocide. John Goodman is in it and a fabulous cast of black actors. It’s my to go binge. Lucifer is the Netflix answer to Good Omens which we loved too. Murder Mystery with Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler was a good laugh throughout. I loved Dead to Me and hope there will be a second season. Now for Prime, once Good Omens was done we were a little at a loss but have been watching Brit oldies. Kavendish and Cadfael, such great acting. Enjoyed The Widow, one of Amazons originals, but was very disappointed in Homecoming with Julia Roberts. We're three episodes into "Dead to Me." The Hubby isn't sure he wants to continue, but I probably will if he doesn't. He doesn't know if he likes the direction, but I'm intrigued. I recently caught up on the last Lemony Snicket season. Quirky, but I adore Neil Patrick Harris. We need to catch up on Endeavor. Maybe when my turn to pick comes up, I'll choose that one.

Last night he watched the pilot episode of "Crime Story," which is so old, but hey, whatever.

  20. What a fun question! Perfect for avoiding chores, so here goes: recently started Good Fight, and we are both totally hooked. Every scene just crackles. (Trying to figure out how they do it). Agree with Karen about Killing Eve - could not stomach the violence, much as I admired the acting. (And I watched all of The Americans, which was pretty violent) So many lovers of The Good Place, and I have never seen it? Must fix that! No one has mentioned the series Fosse/Verdon - fascinating and heart breaking, and beautifully made. We watched the first episode of City on a Hill and thought I didn't like it. Until the starling end. And now I cant' stop thinking about it. You think I might be hooked? And one last one not mentioned- Gentleman Jack. An unusual story, more or less true & based on diaries, that stylishly combines historic early 19th centurey Brit setting with a dashing heroine who wishes she was a man. Works on every level, including that it is surprisingly entertaining. Finally -yes! - Endeavor needs to get rid of that mustache. Do you think he ever finds happiness? Since he grows up to be Morse, it doesn't look good, does it? But I keep watching.Plots sometimes wobbly but the characters are so real

The heroine is a lesbian in 1832, when there was not even a word for it, and determined to live her true life. She acts like an upperclass man most of the time (business tough, physical active, charming to ladies!) and which shocks people of course and is great fun to watch.

  21. Wonderful recommendations, everyone. We have been watching ENDEAVOUR and the first time I saw Shaun Evans, I thought he looked like a character from the Manga comics with these eyes!

Love the Good Place! We have been watching THE GOOD WITCH on the Hallmark Channel before we watch ENDEAVOUR on pbs. Sometimes we watch mystery movies on the Hallmark movies channel. We have not been watching a lot of tv lately with lots of good books to read!

Yes, Britbox is worth it if you love Poirot and Marple stories. The Marple series is with Joan Hickson, who I think looks most like Miss Marple. And they have wonderful quirky shows like Shakespeare and Hathaway. Perhaps you can try Britbox for seven days and peruse the choices, then decide if you want to continue using Britbox.

It was interesting but not enough to keep HBO. Anyway I have until the 27th to watch whatever and then it's gone. I loved Good Omens. The angel dancing cracks me up every single time. Such bliss in his face! And Lucifer. One more season and then he's gone, darn it. I also loved The Santa Clarita Diet. So funny. That is on Netflix. But they didn't renew. How dare they? I am waiting for August when The Terror and Preacher return. And Better Call Saul. I would love to see Yesterday at the movies and the Downton Abbey movie when it comes out. I'm sure there are more shows that I watch but with no real TV season anymore it is hard to remember what and when.

  27. Lots of my favorites mentioned and some new shows to try out. Hank - I can sit and watch episode after episode of The Good Life, too. And Lucy - isn't Meryl Streep amazing? We all already know that but that first episode I had to stop and rewind when I realized she had barely spoken and had effortlessly taken the scene from Reese Witherspoon. All of the actresses are very strong and talented, but now we know why Meryl Streep is Meryl Streep.

  28. I have started watching The Good Fight, now that the first season is streaming on CBS. I refuse to spend money on CBS All Access, but I must admit I am very curious about the upcoming Apple streaming service. So far we don't know how much it will cost, but the shows sound intriguing.

On broadcast channels I watch Elementary (although I have been stockpiling it on DVR lately), Jane the Virgin (about to end) and So You Think You Can Dance (although this season seems somewhat lame, for whatever reason--we'll see what happens when the auditions are over). Jeopardy is a season's pass for me, and the current 2-day champ is awesome, but I know the summer break is coming soon.

On Netflix I'm still bingeing Grace And Frankie, which I love. I'm in the 4th season now. I'm also a devoted follower of The British Bake-Off (or whatever the US version is called) and Queer Eye, and the newer romcom movies are fun. I haven't seen the Jennifer Aniston/Adam Sandler one, but I enjoyed the one with Randall Park and Ali Wong.

I wish I had watched this season of Big Little Lies when I had the chance this past weekend at my son's house, but I was too busy enjoying my grandchildren. I don't have HBO, but I got 3 months of the app last year for my birthday, so I got to watch the first season. I think it's basically a trashy soap (although I enjoyed the book), but the talent is too terrific to ignore.

    2. The Sandler/Anniston one was cute, but...meh. But we LOVED the Ali Wong/Randall Park one, Always Be My Maybe, and Keanu Reeves is hysterical in his cameo as himself.

    3. Deb, I agree. Sandler/Anniston was cute and okay, but not as good as "Always Be My Maybe."

  29. You know, Hank, if you followed a certain review blog, you would have been clued into THE GOOD PLACE a couple of years ago. ;) I found it at the end of season 1 and completely fell in love with it. So funny. They've just announced that the upcoming 4th season will be the last. I'm going to miss it, but I am glad they are going to go out without dragging things out too long. Definitely could have been a problem for that show.

As to my summer watching, I always take the summer to watch some TV on DVD. Right now, it is some classic mystery shows. I've watched season 3 of MURDER, SHE WROTE and DIAGNOSIS: MURDER, and now I'm working on the third and final season of FATHER DOWLING MYSTERIES.

On TV, I watched the end of the current season of THE AMAZING RACE. I'm a huge fan of AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR so I am watching that, too. Then there are ABC's, Wednesday night game shows and in a couple of weeks, the final season of SUITS and the first season of spinoff PEARSON will be both on the USA Network, so I'll be watching those.

And, believe it or not, this is a huge drop off in my TV viewing habits for the summer. I don't know how I keep up with it all during the traditional TV season.

  30. I agree with Julia all day long - Russian Doll is amazing. You will think about it for a long time after you finish watching. We found an interesting British crime drama on Acorn this year called No Offence. Most of the cops are women (and all of the cops in charge are women). It's intense and profane and wonderful. Three seasons are out there, waiting eagerly for season four.
