What's Hank's Writing--and thinking, and packing, and smashing the bots

HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN:  Getting ready for book tour. It always seemed so far away, for the past, oh, six months, when I knew my book ONE WRONG WORD was all finished, and happily printed in galley  versions, and I was well into my next book, which (don’t tell) is not quite finished but I have until January 15. Plenty of time.

(A new excerpt of OWW below!)

Anyway.  There is a massive raft of things to do before publication date, and my fabulous list has been almost derailed by an unexpected and ridiculous thing. More on that’s in a minute.
But quickly, first, so you know. I’m about to make fancy graphics to announce my schedule for February, and it’s going to be amazing. If you are in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, maybe we can see each other! I’ll let you know. I will be gone for two weeks, then home for three days, then out for two weeks again. Fantastic, but how do I pack? How how how? I refuse to check a bag. So this should be interesting.
There are two launch parties! And you are invited! The pre-launch gala party, at Brookline Booksmith on February 2, and I’ll be in conversation with Tess Gerritsen! I am still absolutely floating, and hope you can come.
Then the official launch day event party—February 6– at An Unlikely Story in Plainville Massachusetts. Have you ever been there? It is absolutely magical, and I am so honored to be able to launch OWW there.

And I cannot wait to show you all the bookfaces some fabulous people are making with the cover. Can you guess who THIS is?
So. What is driving me batty during this pre-launch month?

Bots. Or something. I am planning to do a lot of giveaways and promos on my Facebook Author page, but suddenly it is beset and besieged by I don’t even know what. I think they are bots. Or people who I don’t recognize who often post in other languages and other alphabets, and often are selling somewhat annoying, if not disgusting  products, or urging me and other real people to follow them. As if we would.
Reds and Readers, I do not understand this. It's not like one or two, it is honestly, literally, thousands. Thousands. I try to block and delete and report, but it’s like whack-a-bot, and they just come back. I honestly don’t know what to do.
I suppose I could ignore it, and just let the vaguely intimidating and constantly irritating comments sprinkle through my Facebook posts, but they are so unpleasant, and attach themselves like parasites to the comments of my dear friends, and treasured readers.

It is such a thankless task to block and delete and report, and it takes three clicks at least to do one “name.” Does anyone have a better system ?
And also, does anyone know what these actually are? I cannot believe they are real people, and I don’t understand how bots work, and I certainly don’t understand the point! No one, right, is going to follow them, or believe that they are interested in the real us, and certainly they are not going to read my books. Or yours. Or anyone’s.
Has anyone done research on what these are? Hang on a second. I’m going to do that.

((tum tee tum, looking this up.))

Well, a Google search was not helpful. Everybody has no idea. And certainly no one knows the point.
So. Two things. One, keep reading for a tiny excerpt of  ONE WRONG WORD.  One lucky reader today will win one of the few advance review copies I have left!

And then:  I will be LIVE on the page AT NOON ET  to tell you more.
And yes, I will be doing that for my own page, too, because a private group keeps out the bots! And I will be sure to let you know how you can join Hank's Inside Scoop.  Or it might be called Hanks VIP Room. Which one do you think is better?
Can you tell from this post that it’s a chaotic time? Writing book 16, figuring out my elevator pitch for ONE WRONG WORD,  pretending not to look at reviews, (they’re fabulous,) and smashing  the bots.
Never a dull moment, but that’s how we like it.

So Reds and Readers, here’s a tiny bit of ONE WRONG WORD. On the book's  back cover, you’ll see fantastic endorsements from David Baldacci, Shari Lapena, Mary Kubica and James Patterson!  And more! And I hope you love it, too. Let me know – – you know those reviews are beyond essential.

And let me ask--are you battling the bots?

One Wrong Word stars crisis management expert Arden Ward. And here, in chapter one, in her beloved office, she is about to get a surprise from her boss, Warren Carmichael. This scene picks up in the middle of the chapter.

Warren actually gulped. She’d never seen his face so ashen.

“Listen, Arden. I don’t like this any more than you will. But understand. The Swansons are major clients. Lucrative clients. Company-supporting clients.”

“Well, I know. I brought them to you. When we met at my Saving Calico childhood leukemia fundraiser. Remember?”

“Oh. Right.” Warren picked up his glass, rattled the ice. “I didn’t think anything could make this more difficult.”

     “Make what?”

“So Patience Swanson thinks you and her husband have a . . . thing. That he gave you the Joy perfume.”

Arden clapped a palm to her chest. “She’s insane.”

“Possibly. Probably. But that doesn’t change anything. She demands that we let you go.”

“She? Demands? You let me go?” Every nerve cell in Arden’s brain had burst into flames.

       “I have no choice.”

“Choice? Of course you do.” Arden took a step toward him, arms spread in exasperation and disbelief. “Who does she think put her husband where he is today?”

        “I’m sorry, Arden. It’s a situation. I don’t know what to say.”

“You don’t? Well, I do.” She jabbed toward him with a forefinger. “You can say ‘she’s lost her freaking mind.’ You can tell that woman I’m a valuable employee who brings in big bucks, and new clients, and will continue to do so. And who, it goes without saying, is not having some sort of sordid affair with her vile entitled husband who clearly she has problems with. But the ‘problems’ are not me. A situation? It’s my life!”

“I’m sorry, Arden. Unless you can prove he didn’t give you perfume. Unless you can prove he didn’t—”

She rolled her eyes to the heavens, then harnessed her outrage. “I’m not going to prove one thing on this planet. Ask him, right? First of all, I can’t prove something that didn’t happen, that’s through the looking glass, and I cannot believe you’re even asking me that. Is that what you think of me? Let me ask you that. That this is true?”

“No, of course not, no.” Warren lurched to his feet, turned away, not looking at her, looking at every place else but her. “He’ll deny it. So I can’t force him to—”

“Ah. I see. Warren. Look at me. So you believe her, not me? Is that what you’re saying? Because if that is what you’re saying, Warren, I could file so many lawsuits it’d make your head spin. Hey. You’re a pro. Imagine the headlines. Blame the victim? Or wait, would you paint me the vixen, the temptress? Oh, yeah, do it. Please do that. I’d love that. Bring it.”

Warren had to know this was bull. “Are you hearing me?” she persisted. “Are you ignoring me? Look at me. I know the rules. I know the deal. You cannot do this. I’ll go to HR so fast it’ll—”

“Be careful, Arden.” Warren interrupted her. “Take a beat. If you sue me, well, that’s not gonna help you, is it? Suddenly you’re . . . a problem employee. A liability. On the defensive. It’s not a good look. You know that.”

“What I know—and what you know—is that it’s not true.”

  1. Regarding "One Wrong Word" . . . Warren should absolutely know better than to walk down that path . . . .

I'm afraid I'm in the dark when it comes to bots and strange things on social media pages . . . .

    I'm casting my vote for Hank's Inside Scoop . . . .

  2. I also like the journalism connection of Inside Scoop.

  3. I don't get bots. Not only how they function but what anyone gets out of them. Unless it is to be annoying. In that case, they absolutely work.

Good luck getting it all figured out. And finishing your book. And figuring out how to back for your tour.

  5. I'm so sorry about the bots, Hank. FB has always had these nuts posing as friendly Army men or whatever, but the constant fake commenting is awful. I think private groups are the way to go, and I will be happy to join yours.

The excerpt is intriguing, as is your packing challenge! But you always pull that off and look fabulous.

  6. I loathe the bots. I vote for Hank's Inside Scoop for the private page, which seems absolutely the way to go these days.

I love the excerpt. Wow and whoa - Warren! Get a grip!

I don't envy you the packing challenge. Keep it simple. Remember we love YOU and your BOOKS; the clothes are immaterial; and what you wore yesterday is new to me if I didn't see you then but see you today. And, anyway, nobody will care. Just enjoy the fun of the tour for this book!

Re: the bots, I get them periodically, but certainly not on the scale you're mentioning. I just block and delete them, but I don't bother to report, because they just come back under another name. The situation you have calls for an expert, I think. Really, someone to come in and analyze your site and perhaps find whatever back door they are usuing to enter. It may be you have a virus or someone has actually hijacked your account. Best of luck. How nerve-wracking!

    2. Oh, thank you! HIjacking is truly terrible, I live in fear. But so far this is garden variety trolling--some one tlod me that the trolls have now discovered author pages, and they are on the hunt.

  8. HANK: Ugh, I agree it's a never-ending struggle to battle the bots. The fake military men & fake commenters are one thing but the scammers creating fake author pages & profiles to convince fans who "won" prizes to enter credit card information are truly vile. So, yes a private page for Hank is probably the way to go.

Thanks again for allowing me early Netgalley access for ONE WRONG WORD as a Super Reader.
Everyone is in for another twisty thrilling read, as your excerpt shows. Looking forward to hearing more about OWW on Reds and Readers today.

As for your upcoming book tour & packing, I have also been in the "carry-on only" camp. A bit more challenging in the winter with bulkier clothes but you can do it!!!

  9. One Wrong Word sounds amazing. No surprise there, of course. As for bots, I don't know what to tell you. I know you love to interact with readers, but you may have to save that for the private group and set your page to no comments allowed. (Thinking... can you still do that? You used to, but FB keeps changing things.)

I guess bots aren't the worst that can hit you. Donnell Bell has completely lost her FB pages, both personal and private as well as her linked Instagram account. Some (insert foul word) hijacked her account and took it over, locking her out. So infuriating.

    ReplyDelete

    1. WOW, what happened to Donnell is just horrible!

  11. Facebook is its own evil, refusing to do anything about the darn bots, even encouraging them to proliferate by not doing anything. It's infuriating. Donna Andrews has been at WAR with the social media site over this very issue. Makes you wonder how much Facebook makes off the pests.

Obviously, that famous person doing the bookface is our Julia.

My vote is also for "Inside Scoop"; the journalism reference is perfect.

Hank, you don't fool me, I know you are a brilliant packer, and will rise beautifully to the challenge! For three weeks in Africa that included holiday social activities, hiking, safari, hot weather there/cold weather at both ends here, I had one small carryon plus a "personal item" big enough to hold my electronics, water bottle, extra shoes, handbag, and other stuff. It slid over my carryon handle and a small crossbody bag holding my passport, cash and phone let me breeze through the airports. Packing cubes and quick-dry underwear, plus scarves, are my "secrets". Which you already know, except your version of scarves will be pashminas and versatile jackets! A packable, full-size down coat and layers. Those coats squash down into the smallest space, they're almost a miracle, but they're warm.

  14. Congratulations on the book tour and on the almost finished book! Bots are a scourge! For packing, I recommend investing in some merino wool pieces. I took a carry on for 2 weeks in Europe last summer, and I am a large person, so consequently the clothing items were limited. The merino is soft as silk, not itchy, and works as well for winter as for summer. It does not get stinky as fast as other fabrics. If you are going to be in the south you may get some t-shirt days, and it does not wrinkle, can be washed out in the hotel sink, and packs small. I bought 2 t-shirts for an eye watering price, and am not sorry. You can get dresses, leggings, and various tops and sweaters.

    1. Sometimes eye-watering can work! ANd sounds like. you have this perfectly figured out!

  15. Congratulations, Hank! Warren better watch his step, but I'm also thinking Arden is protesting too much. Suspicious me.

Bots are spam. People write code that makes these comments wherever and whenever they can. You'll noticed they appear most often on a public post - because there is no security. Not that Facebook's security is all that great, but it's something. With a public post, it's all out there. The bot (code) finds every place it *can* post a comment and does. There isn't a person behind the comment - at least not making it. Just writing the code.

The point? To get someone to click. In the best case, the bot harvests the clicker's information and you get inundated with ads you don't want. Worst case, the bot harvests personal information that can be used to steal an identity or something similar. And people do click. Either because they are interested or they "just have to see" how disgusting the thing really is.

  16. Wow! great excerpt! Can't wait to read the whole thing! And I agree, it's Julia holding the book.

Re bots--my main problem has been guys who are out there looking for single women they can 'romance' and steal money from. If you look at public FB pages, you will find some posts where the same guy will reply to comments made by many women asking that they send him friend requests. I think it happened to me on Deborah's FB page once. I always reply that I used to work in law enforcement and that romance scams are the most common kind of fraud, so thanks but no thanks. Recently I read an article in the WaPo or NYT about a Chinese man who was lured by a job offer to a large internet 'factory' in rural Malaysia where he was forced to work (along with hundreds of others) creating fake on-line profiles and trying to woo women so the factory could steal money. He was kept there for months, tortured, and eventually escaped and was able to tell his story. On line scamming is a huge "business".

  17. Hank's Inside Scoop! For all the reasons everyone else has mentioned, plus it just sounds more exciting. Re packing: love Amanda's comment about what you wore yesterday is new to me if I didn't see you yesterday.

Re excerpt: Arden doesn't sound suspicious to me, she sounds like a woman fed up to there with having to deal with obnoxious people because they're clients. And all this furor over something so stupid. A bottle of perfume? That's all they could come up with to smear her?

Bots--argh!! A distant cousin loves to share my FB posts whenever I'm promoting my nephew's gigs. Every single time, he says he can't share, but if I make the post public for two seconds, BOOM! Strange men begin posting comments. I've explained to my cousin that I won't be doing this any longer.

    2. Laurie, I ruthlessly block "people" from countries where I have no editions in translation. One giveaway to check for just in case: there seems to be a whole list of white, middle-aged American women writers out there. See who the "person" is following - if there's a sweep of familiar names, it's a bot. Also suspicious: profiles with no book-related likes, profiles with no friends with the same family name, profiles with large numbers of friends who ALSO look like scambots, ie, sexy lady pics.

Yes, it feels like whack the mole. Every time I commented on an Author's Page, which is Public, I got comments from "handsome men" asking to add them as friends on FB. I think these are bots.

I will look at your schedule and see if it is possible to be at any of you live events. You usually get a packed house but it's nice to support your friends! Packing, I have absolute faith in you. You will have one of your pretty skirts, some switch-y up jackets and a pashmina or two, and you will be fine. I am always amazed at how much I can cram into a roll aboard suitcase. You cannot check on book tour unless you want to end up having to buy emergency clothes at Walmart!

Bots!! So annoying, and so time consuming. I try to swat them every day, but it means not only blocking the fake followers, but checking every comment stream and blocking/deleting those. The romance scammers are the worst (and these are also bots, not real people) but people really do fall for these things, a lot more often than you think (we know someone who got taken for thousands, more than once) and they are very lucrative for the scammers. And, yes, FB should do better.

  40. Inside Scoop… I love all the detailing you do.. you are so interesting to listen to!! You are such a pro, and so personable!!! I hope to meet up in Georgia. I was so excited to actually meet you for the first time last year with my daughter Michelle.

  41. I do not know what the bots are staying to accomplish, but I am sick of them.
Hank’s Inside Scoop is my second choice because I am going to think of myself as a Hankie, the pretty pristine embroidered lace kind. Swifties works for Taylor after all!

    1. A Hankie! Oh, that is hilarious...and we could certainly make good Hankie giveaways... :-)

  42. Hank, on the edge of my chair with this one…the new book not the bots. But feeling “shunned” by Blogger and now FaceBook. Blogger has refused to let me be anything but anonymous for a very long time. Now the FaceBook let me join the Reds and Readers, but the only posts that show up in FB feeds are the “thank you for letting me join”…which are fun to read. Only by checking the Reds and Readers page do I discover the video posts by you and Jenn. My FB name is “Elizabeth Ann”. Any insights? Thanks, Elisabeth

    2. Hank, I like the private page aspect, but having to visit the page in order to find posts is my problem. All I seem to be getting in my feed are the “glad to be here” posts (that I really like!). No posts that “Hank will be here live at noon”, that I expected. Have been in contact with Administrator at Reds and Readers, but not sure if she is clear on my problem, as her response was that the “glad to be here” posts would diminsh with time. Waiting to hear from her today, Thanks for helping. Elisabeth

  43. Wow, Hank! You have certainly hit on one of the biggest problems of our times. Bots? Beats me, but for most part I am hardly looking at Facebook anymore. Not to worry, I certainly did sign up to join Reds and Readers.

My guess for the face is Julia - I simply cannot imagine it being anyone else. Apparently most other people think the same thing. Your tease for One Wrong Word should reap some huge rewards. I'm lucky enough to have already read an ARC and I assure all that it is as twisty as described. Hurry and pick up a copy as soon as you can.

  44. I don’t think my comment published earlier. I am sick of the annoying bots and do not understand what their goal might possibly be.
I will settle for Hank’s Inside Scoop but in my mind I will be a Hankie. The pristine lacy embroidered kind. If Taylor can have Swifties, you can have Hankies.

  45. I am not a fan of bots. I keep reporting them. Sometimes, Facebook comes back and tells me they did nothing against their standards, but I can be in Facebook jail for a week due to over posting in a certain amount of time. I have yet to figure any of this out. I love the idea of a private group. Thank you so much. Hugs. God bless you. I love Hank's Inside Scoop.

  46. Hank; it could be a case of user error but I can’t find a “join” button for Reds and Readers :(. Does one need to be invited?
Otherwise I presume the bots are similar to robo-calls and spam emails; all a numbers game, hoping 1 out of a million will answer/respond/click; but so much additional work for us!!

  47. I am in the dark about the bots, too. Frustrating for sure! I absolutely love 'One Wrong Word', and gave it 5 stars!
