MY FAVORITE THINGS.

RHYS BOWEN:  It's been an awful week, hasn't it? My stomach still hasn't stopped churning. Every hour a new piece of bad news. So I thought I'd end a week that was difficult for me to find uplifting and calming posts with a song. Enjoy.

A SONG FOR THE TIME OF COVID

My Favorite Things—a Covid Song.

 Zooming with grandkids
And Facetime with daughters
Long bathtime soaks in
Delicious hot waters
Reading good books and
The pleasure that brings
These are a few of my favorite things

Walking in nature
With time to observe
Home exercising with
Vim and with verve
Zooming with choir
And the strangely weird sings
These are a few of my favorite things

 More Zooms with bookstores
And bookclubs and friends—swell
Trying new recipes,
( not all work out well)
 But sharing with spouse
 And the comfort that brings
These are a few of my favorite things.

Hoping for vaccines
And longing for travel
Dreaming of days
When I’ll no more unravel
Hugs for my dear ones
How lovely that rings!
These are a few of my favorite things.

When I’m lonely
Isolated
I’m depressed and mad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad.

Finishing my week with optimism. Things will get better. Things are getting better. Vaccines will come. We will get through this and all meet again at a mystery convention where we will hug each other.

  6. After reading the three first lines, I decided to sing it along and at the end I broke in tears and wept.
It is good to evacuate the emotional ups and downs.
    Thank you for this Rhys.

    1. Danielle: I am finding January more challenging than expected, so I am listening to The Keep Going Song by The Bengsons quite often. I like the lyrics and the music of it; You might enjoy it, too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs-ju_L9pEQ

  8. Perfect! I'll sing it all day. Yesterday was a clear, sunny, winter day, when all things are possible. I made refrigerator lasagna, using up the remnants of ingredients from the holidays.

  9. thank you, Rhys! Trying to keep the light at the end of the tunnel in sight--keeping faith that it's the sun I'm seeing there! Bless you and bless all!

  11. Optimism is good, especially on an unseasonably foggy January morning. Hang in there, everyone!

  12. What fun, Rhys! Personally, I've been clinging to the final lines from the new David Copperfield movie lately: "Don't worry. You'll get through it. And you'll have quite the ride on the way." Someday, we'll look back on all of this and write.

  14. Perfect, Rhys!

Yesterday morning I made a decision and I messaged my daughter in Portland about it. I have not seen her in a year (!), and I told her that ten days after I get my second vaccine, whenever that is, I am on my way out to Oregon to see her. I don't care if I have to fly, drive, or skateboard.

Although she did advise me not to do that latter, reminding me of the challenging mountains between here and there.

She bought her first house in March and I have not been able to help her with it, and they are already planning to put it on the market. What a year.

Some of My favorite things (I may have forgotten some) :

    Sleeping in late

Online classes with my Bar Method exercise classes

Zooming in Sign Language with my family since my voice is hoarse right now

    Learning to Bake new dishes

Online Master Writing class with Ellie Alexander

    Reading lots of good books!

    Watching movies with English subtitles

"This Time Next Year We'll Be Laughing" is our family motto and it was a pleasant surprise to see a memoir with the same words.

    Happy Sunday,

    1. Closed captioning is such a boon! My husband has been deaf in one ear since an accident in his early 20's, and his "good" ear is losing steam, too. I turned on CC on every device for him, and he can now watch and know what the heck is going on. What a gift it is, even though it's not always perfect.

So happy for your ability to sign on Zoom, Diana!

    2. DEB, thank you. I love these too.

KAREN, thank you for your kind words. My signing is not perfect. As long as my family communicates and understands our signing styles, that is all that matters, right?

I'm so glad that your husband has CC available. The CC is such a wonderful technological gift.

  16. Thank you, Rhys. I immediately had the tune running through my head. If it's still there when I go to bed.... well, I do like Julie Andrews.

  17. Oh well. As they say, this too shall pass. We're having a gray, wet, dreary, cold day without the benefit of snow, which Debs and Gigi might see in their part of the state. Hopefully minus the ice.

    1. Pat, I was just going to say no snow here, then I looked out the window and it is snowing! I don't think we'll get enough to stick, but still fun.

  18. Someone put this up on FB ----- "I want to cancel my subscription to 2021. I took the 7 day free trial and I'm not interested!"

I'm beginning to feel that way too! It has to get better, right????? ;)
